I saw it last night. Best film I’ve seen in ages. Put it this way I saw Lost in Translation a few weeks ago and I enjoyed School of Rock so much more.
Weird story. Way back when, I was at UCLA doing my deejay thing on the college radio station there. My freshman roommate, a theater major, was also doing one, with his actor buddy. Their show was freakishly entertaining–it was called “Box of Squid”. Lots of Zappa, followed by show tunes.
It was around either “Tenacious D” or High Fidelity that I realized why Jack Black seemed so oddly familiar. He was my roommate’s friend and co-deejay. Even back then he had that strange magnetism that comes across so strongly. I always felt that at any given time either he’d say something funny or try to stab you, only he wouldn’t have a knife but you’d soil yourself anyway.
So, yeah, it’s weird seeing him doing movies, like School of Rock, but even back then I could tell he was one of the most charismatic individuals I’d ever hope to meet. It’s true: movie stars are born, not made.
And I dug the movie, too.
I love Jack Black but this film did nothing for me. That’s to be expected when he carries the entire movie and costars with a lot of kids though.
I would give it around a C, at best.
The plot was kinf of standard and somewhat predictable, but the performances (Jack Black and all the kids) are outstandingly good. It’s an unashamedly feelgood film, but it doesn’t stop it from being impressive and entertaining.
Hey the film is Jack and the Kids, they dont carry the film they are the film. I think it’s great.
I thought it was fantastic, Jack Black has such great energy and enthusiasm that he carried all the way through – and he’s not afraid to look like a fool. Plus I like Joan Cusack.
Plus, I liked that the movie was really funny and also really clean – I could watch it with my inlaws without being embarrassed by the language. Not that bad languate bothers me that much; but this movie didn’t need it to be funny.
To each their own. I just wasn’t overly impressed with it.
It was a decent way to waste two hours but I’m glad I paid $1 to see it at the second run instead of $10 to see it at night though.
Hijack (no pun intended): There’s one question I’ve always wanted to ask Jack Black: “When you did that X-Files episode with Giovanni Ribisi, was having your face caressed by Gillian Anderson the highlight of your acting career thus far or what?”
This is a great movie! My husband and five year old rock-god son have seen it seven times; I’ve seen it three and we’re getting the DVD on March 4th (pending the successful completion of a sticker chart by said five year old). Someone said it’s really clean and it REALLY is. And yet, the kids are not cutesy, the music is terrific, and Jack Black is a pisser and a half. I can’t say enough good things about this movie.
Hated the film. Loved the music.
