Schwarzenegger as Popeye?

According to this news story , Arnold Schwarzenegger was chosen in a poll as the celebrity who most resembles Popeye.

Arnold Schwarzenegger?!?!?!?!?

The only resemblance I can see is that they’re both strong. I guess they both talk “funny,” but in different ways. Popeye is small, ugly, unedjumacted, has a gravelly voice and has a girlfriend with a stick figure.

So what celebrity bears the greatest resemblance to Popeye? Sean Penn gets into his share of fights and is about the right size. Any ideas?

Moving this from IMHO to Cafe Society.

Arnold is just too big. Sean Penn is smaller and slimmer, so his build is about right, but he (to me) is still a bit too young. Popeye was a crusty old salt. Robin Williams was a bit too bulky too, but he sort did that thing with his face that was almost right.

Popeye isn’t exactly an incredibly popular cartoon character anymore. The fact that his popularity lasted through the better part of this century is amazing in and of itself… but hell, even Popeye’s Chicken doesn’t have the ol’ sailor’s image on their stores anymore.

It is the characterization, and the metaphor of spinach as steriods, more than the relative size that makes Ahhnold more resemble Popeye.

Yes, and the concept of performance-enhancing substances looks different now. Popeye was my hero when I was a kid.

To steal a line from an old friend (Hi Opal!), I always used to love it when he took his drugs and started to beat people up.

Popeye’s Chicken was named after Popeye Doyle in The French Connection, not after the cartoon sailor.

He’s still on the spinach can, though!

I think they should do something new with Popeye, maybe a feature-length cartoon or even a new series. The guy is unique and funny.

The problem with a live-action Popeye though is, as you can see by the Arnie comparison, no one really looks like him. I guess Robin Williams did it about as good as it could be done, but it wasn’t great.

You is disgustipatin’.

You hadn’t oughta be usin’ that language in front of wimmin and infinks!

Did you see Mystic River? Sean isn’t exactly looking as dewey as when he played Spicoli.
