Ok people. I have been having a discussion with a few Dopers about this subject, and it’s pretty fun and challenging, so I am finally posting it.
If a Scooby Doo movie were made starring real people, who do you think would fit the roles best?
Also state why you chose the actor/actress you named.
My choices have been as follows:
[ul]
[li]Shaggy = Jim Carrey…reason… tall, lanky, good impersonator, could easily be made to look like Shaggy, and can do all the cartoonish moves that are Shaggy’s trademarks. He’s a bit old for the character, but seems most suitable IMO[/li][li]Velma = Jeanene Garafolo…reason… has the perfect look, and perfect personality… she IS Velma …everyone I have talked to agrees 100% so far[/li][li]Daphne = ??? I was hoping for natural redheads who are sexy and came up with very little. My first choice was Julia Roberts, but she’s over age. Other possibilities I chose were: Sandra Bullock, Liz Hurley, Gillian Anderson, Sarah Michelle Gellar[/li][li]Fred = ??? This is where the greatest mystery lies. Who the HELL can play Fred? I can’t think of anyone who fits Fred’s looks and personality. Fred is supposed to be a hunk and a wimp at the same time. A ladies man, yet somewhat sissified (the ascot! eek) I had chose Brad Pitt based solely on looks, but I can’t see him doing comedy. Val Kilmer? too old… Im stumped. No one else I have talked to can think of a good Fred actor either.[/li][/ul]
And if I had any say in the matter, “Scrappy ‘CRAPPY’ Doo” would NOT appear in the movie. Oh I hate that lil freak!
Hey, didn’t the film critic for the Daily Show (Frank DeCaro, I think is his name), in reviewing the movie, The Haunting, attach all of the characters to a Scooby Doo character? Quite funny.
Actually, the perfect Fred would be Michael J. Fox.
and Shaggy would be the tall light haired guy from The Drew Carrey show (so weird . . . usually I can remember actors’ names)
my favorite redhead actress, Patricia Tallman, could work for Daphne.
and, um, agreeing with you for your pick for Velma, I want Nicholas Cage to play Scooby Doo. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
*Shaggy = Jim Carrey…reason… tall, lanky, good impersonator, could easily be made to look like Shaggy, and can do all the cartoonish moves that are Shaggy’s trademarks. He’s a bit old for the character, but seems most suitable IMO *
I’d go with what Daniel said and suggest Ryan Stiles
*Velma = Jeanene Garafolo…reason… has the perfect look, and perfect personality… she IS Velma …everyone I have talked to agrees 100% so far *
Yeah, she’d have the right look with the glasses.
*Daphne = ??? I was hoping for natural redheads who are sexy and came up with very little. My first choice was Julia Roberts, but she’s over age. Other possibilities I chose were: Sandra Bullock, Liz Hurley, Gillian Anderson, Sarah Michelle Gellar *
Julia Roberts wouldn’t be bad. And since she’s younger than Janeane Garofalo, I don’t think age would matter.
*Fred = ??? This is where the greatest mystery lies. Who the HELL can play Fred? I can’t think of anyone who fits Fred’s looks and personality. Fred is supposed to be a hunk and a wimp at the same time. A ladies man, yet somewhat sissified (the ascot! eek) I had chose Brad Pitt based solely on looks, but I can’t see him doing comedy. Val Kilmer? too old… Im stumped. No one else I have talked to can think of a good Fred actor either. **
My first thought for Velma would be Tracy Ullman. Throw her in some horn-rims and a turtleneck, and she’d be great!
I second the vote for Ryan Stiles for Shaggy. That’s a fabulous casting idea.
As for Daphne… how about the girl who plays Nikki on Spin City? I don’t know what her real name is, but she’s a pretty redhead.
And that leaves me with Fred. The show is annoying, but the lead from Dawson’s Creek could be good. James van der Beek. He’s kind of a generic blond guy.
I guess I no longer have my finger on the pulse of teen America, 'cause all my picks are on the older side.
Ryan Stiles is the only actor for Shaggy. When I heard that Mike Myers was planning on doing a Scooby Doo movie, I actually wrote him a letter to that effect.
I could deal with Janeane Garofalo as Velma, but Velma, despite being chunky and bookish, was also awfully perky, and Garofalo, for all her excellent qualities, is not perky. Actually, as much as I >>>HATE<<< Saturday Night Live, I think a good choice might be Molly Shannon.
How about Debra Messing or Denise Richards for Daphne? Or (giggle) Jane Leeves?
And I think I have the winner for Fred: Rick Schroeder.
