From reports here in the UK it’s 15 dead and 60 hostages But likely to increase sad sad day for Paris. They’ve issued a state of emergency for the whole of France.
Madness. What do they think they can achieve by doing things like this? It’s absolutely senseless.
I know that I’m ranting and stating the obvious but dammit, this is insanity that achieves nothing positive for anybody. Not the perpetrators. Not whatever their cause is. Nothing.
I looked here first. MPSIMS.
This is so goddamn frustrating! What are these assholes trying to accomplish? What the fuck is wrong with these people?
Eagles of Death Metal, the band playing at the venue, are reportedly safe.
Various sources are giving me different versions that a State of Emergency for the entirety of Metropolitan France has not been issued since the time of the Algerian war, or even at all under the 5th Republic.
Putain merde…
Frustrating? Alien mindsets dont value what classical liberalism values. It’s not complicated.
This is so sad, I wonder what ramifications this will have on the refugees coming to Europe, it’s not like there won’t be.
AP is reporting 35 killed (quoting a French police report) and at least 100 taken hostage.
Hostage situation in progress per CNN.
This appears to be the worst terrorist attack since 9/11. Words fail.
F***K…
For people who need to see up to date coverage if you can get access BBC do a live page.
I’m in shock a lot of people are saying retaliation for the killing of ‘Jijadi John’ but this does seem to well organised for that either way my heart goes out to Paris tonight.
France has already closed its borders to everyone. That is an unprecedented move that isn’t just for show because it is so extreme. Yes, there will be severe ramifications to the refugees coming into and through Europe. I wouldn’t be surprised if the mood in many countries led to strong border security, imprisonment and mass deportations.
This crisis still isn’t over. There are a whole theater full of people still being held hostage and reportedly killed one by one. Some of them are posting about it on social media right now not knowing if they will live through tonight.
Assuming this is ISIS, I cannot figure out what their strategy is. They supposedly already bombed a Russian airliner this week and now they are attacking France yet again. They might as well carry out mass attacks on the U.S. to see how many powerful militaries with nukes they can really piss off.
Maybe this is a way to get Russia, France and the U.S. to get over their petty differences and get rid of some of that excess nuclear inventory at the same time. I know a large patch of desert that would be the perfect place to dispose of it.
I’m watching on BBC now. They’re reporting “at least” 40 dead. Multiple bombs and explosions. A hostage situation with 100 hostages.
City’s locked down. National borders closed. This is France’s 9/11.
I think things are going to get a whole lot tighter in cities everywhere. I’m glad we visited New York and Washington when we did a few years ago.
American Doper here. I’m posting from a hotel in Villepinte, near De Gaulle Airport. I’m watching TF1 right now.
So far seems that at least one car bomb was detonated outside the Stade de France as spectators were leaving after a football match between the French and German national teams. More or less at the same time, gunmen with automatic weapons opened fire at maybe three locations in downtown Paris, in the vicinity of Place Republique. TV is reporting up to 40 dead, and dozens of injuries. Some hostages may be held at the Bataclan concert venue. Quite a lot of confusion, as one may imagine.
I was supposed to fly out tomorrow; looks like that won’t happen. Frontiers have been closed; Paris residents being told to stay indoors (naturally enough).
They’d regard that as a glorious victory, considering what killing that many innocent bystanders would do to those nations politically. “Make the other side go berserk” is a classic terrorist goal.
I’m seeing reports the hostages at the concert are being shot one by one.
I don’t suppose Germany and Spain and England could send in air support?
The France 24 English-language feed is doing good, solid, sober coverage here
What would that achieve? Anyway, the French military and gendarmerie are very capable.
To help.
I wish Wolf Blitzer would quit drooling over the number of dead. He seems to get more excited every time he mentions it.
