Scott Walker drawing huge throngs in support of Cooch in Virginia (not)

It might bump it up a bit if there are any other high-profile races on the same ballot. Are there?

Since his five minutes are over I also wanted to say that EW Jackson was very well named.

I was scared there for a minute. But it’s official: the Commonwealth of Virginia successfully douched their Cooch today.

Now I can go to bed rest assured that I won’t be losing my job or my vaginal rights anytime soon.

The President nearly cost McCauliffe the race.

A win is still a win.

A win can also be a warning sign. Any other Republican but Cooch wins that race.

I’ll be very interested in seeing the turnout numbers. Obama’s “coalition of the ascendant” doesn’t come out when he’s not on the ballot. If they didn’t in VA, that’s a bad sign for 2014 and even 2016.

Yes, of course - no matter the result of an election, it is invariably bad for the Democrats. Somehow.

I see your warning and I double it, The Cooch was running against McAuliffe, the defeat of the Cooch came even with weak sauce, With a better candidate the Democrat for the Lieutenant Governor won by a bigger margin than McAuliffe.

Obama is not running anymore, your point here is past its due date. Once again, this result shows that while it will be hard, the change in Virginia is there to make it even harder for the Republicans that are of the extreme variety.

Yeah, I read the thread title as being something about “Scott Walker drawing huge thongs in support of cooch” at first.

Don’t know if this is accurate or not, but it’s conventional wisdom here in Virginia that the governor is usually of the opposing party of whomever is the president. So even though the polls were saying one thing, I was still kind of expecting history to repeat itself.

While the race was awfully (stomach-crunchingly) close, I don’t think the Cooch can take too much consolation from it. The Democrats managed to do what Ken was afraid of. Obamacare screw-ups aside, they got people to the polls. It doesn’t matter if most people don’t even know what the new governor looks like or exactly what he intends to do. We knew who the Cooch is, and that was enough.

In most competitive races, you lose 5 points in the last week, you lose. Congratulations, you beat a crazy Tea Partier by 1.5 points in a swing state. Wow, such strength!

That’s my point. No Obama on the ticket, no turnout for Democrats.

[Taps on shoulders of adaher, points at the big score board.]
It is now 2.4% over the Cooch.

Still 5 below the polling average and nowhere near the double digit lead some people thought he had.

The defensive football player I mentioned on the other thread still looked silly and was made fun of by the sportscasters for jumping up and down over a late defensive play that did not charge the result.

I figured you and Hentor would fall back on that. That’s okay, your guy did win, so congratulations. But it should never have been that close, and I think you know that. And it was close because of the President.

Assuming that continues to be a problem for the next year, that bodes very badly for Democrats trying to hold the Senate. So you’d better start coaching your guy on how to run a government, because you’re finding out now that that stuff is actually kinda important.

And let’s not forget how much Terry had to outspend Cooch to get that slim victory. Money doesn’t grow on trees. You won’t have that advantage in the 6-7 crucial Senate races in 2014.

The usual narrative is that the party in power does bad in the off years.

What happened was not “usual”.

I still think it will be tough for the Democrats in 2014, but the signs are better for the Democrats if troglodyte extreme conservatives are the candidates for the Republicans.

This is the first time since 1977 Virginia has elected a governor that belongs to the same party as the president. You can see where this is a real disaster for Democrats.

I predicted a 3-6 point victory for Terry- not surprisingly, it tightened a bit at the end. But Terry won with a 3% margin, and hopefully the D won AG as well.

And not surprisingly, adaher is trying to spin a close win as bad for the Democrats. McAuliffe was an awful candidate, with no experience in office… and he still won.
