I was in town with my daughter, as many other Christmas shoppers were, plus revellers at the George Square events, and people on their way to pantomimes and Christmas markets. We walked out a theatre into the aftermath, it was very surreal.
I’m okay, just shaken and realising I’d been standing in that spot outside GOMA 90mins earlier.
PaulParkhead? Meurglys Scougs? I know you’re all more east coast, but just in case (especially since it was outside Queen St station, where most people get the train to Embra…)
It’s so like last year, when we had the fatal Cluthacrash on the run-up to Xmas. I’ve heard rumours of a baby in a pram hit this time, really hoping that’s not true.
Holy crap. Hope everyone’s okay. Doesn’t Pjen live in Lanarkshire? Baron Greenback I think lives somewhere in Lothian. Nonetheless, let us know you’re okay, y’all.
With no disrespect to the man, although it seems he survived the heart attack and the resulting crash initially - I almost hope he passes away peacefully now without regaining consciousness. What a horrible horrible thing that would be to wake up to.
My mother’s husband died one New Year’s Eve morning. Though he managed to pull the car to the side of the road and stop, his foot mashed down on the accelerator pedal when he died and the car crashed into a wall.
It’s about 300m from GOMA, where the first pedestrians were hit, to the Queen Street station entrance where the lorry crashed. That’s a helluva busy part of the city too. Yikes.
The opening sequences of the Brad Pitt zombie movie World War Z, from a couple of years ago, featured a garbage truck crashing through the streets and traffic of “Philadelphia”. Guess where it was actually filmed. Yep, around George Square in Glasgow.
I’m cosy at home in Edinburgh, shaking my head at the thought of how awful it must have been. How in the blink of an eye life changes for ever (or ends).
Folk just out doing last minute Christmas shopping or enjoying the lights, the ice skating, visiting santa. Just as last year folk were just enjoying a bit of live music in a pub. And, let’s not forget, 26 years yesterday since folk were sitting at home with their families in Lockerbie.
And I agree with Cinnamon Imp about the driver, heartless as it may sound.
Unconfirmed reports that the six dead included two kids, a baby and it’s mother.
One thing I hadn’t thought of - a bin lorry has a crew, not just a driver: “Pictures showed the crew of the bin lorry - clad in Glasgow City Council hi-viz clothing - being led from the rear seats in the cab of the green bin wagon.” (Daily Record UK)
No children dead, thankfully, looks like the rumour mill got mixed up (a mother fainted when she realised she’d just pulled the pram out of the way in time, but was unhit).
One woman stopped at a cash machine, and her parents and eldest daughter died just up the street from her. Too awful.
Sorry, hadn’t seen this thread before now. I’m fine; too busy here coping with work and ongoing aged parent crises to go anywhere outside Edinburgh.
Must be dreadful for the woman Cinnamon Imp just mentioned, seeing her parents and daughter killed in front of her. And, yeah, if the driver recovers, he’ll feel guilty about it for the rest of his life.
