Scream (1996)

So we all know who the kill turned out to be. But how does the killer’s motive explain killing Drew Barrymore at the start?

Didn’t she dump Stu for the guy who gets cut open by the pool?

She lied about never having been kissed.
Sorry. I know it doesn’t have anything to do with the movie Scream except for that’s what I wanted to do during that whole movie- scream “LIAR!” at the screen.

It was a formula. The first kill doesn’t need to be tied to the killer’s main motive.
On a practical level they may have been playtesting everything - the voice modulator, their choreography, etc. If they called and said “Do you like scary movies?” and she said “…wait, is this Stu?” then they knew they needed to fix something.

How did she lie again? I don’t remember that from the movie.

I suspect they are riffing on Drew’s other movie “Never Been Kissed”.

Sure, but it seems like the thought is Drew was lying in “Never Been Kissed” And from all the times I…uh a friend, watched that movie, that never seemed to come up.

I will apologize again Dodgy, for taking this thread in a direction you did not want.

The lie of the movie Never Been Kissed is in the title. And the premise. The whole movie is a lie. There is no way on Zeus’ blue planet that Drew Barrymore made it to the ripe old age of 25 without having been kissed. Also, there is no way the character Jessie in the movie made it to the ripe age of 25 without any male attention as portrayed in the movie.

I likewise apologize.

Also, I’m not sure if it’s me, or I’m being whooshed, or what, but almost nothing you wrote here makes sense to me.

She is saying the premise of the film is implausible, because Drew Barrymore is an attractive 25 year old.

I don’t see how the attractiveness of the actor playing a role has any bearing on the looks of the character, especially when she is specifically made up most of her life as an ugly, nerdy person.

Not that big of a deal, just never heard that opinion on this movie before.

Not only was Drew far too attractive but the actual character in the movie was also too smart, attractive and personable to be the unwanted social pariah she was supposed to be in the movie.

And yes, if you are playing a character no guy wants to kiss, then you should look the part.

In response to the OP, I always thought it was psychological torture. They killed Casey (Drew B) and her boyfriend. Casey was in Sydney’s (Neve C) home room, on the anniversary of her mother being murdered. Once she got scared because of that they started toying with her.

She had dumped one of the killers (iirc, Matt Lillard’s character) for the new guy, killed by the pool. The opener is once of my favorite performances by Barrymore, and the strongest opener of the period after the set-up for Cliffhanger.

As for Never Been Kissed, I only saw the movie once, back when it was in theaters, but doesn’t Drew’s opening voice-over explain that she’s talking about a specific type of romantic kiss, rather than just general kissing? I recall them getting out ahead of that complaint from the jump, but maybe I’m misremembering.

Don’t worry about it, biggirl. I’d forgotten about this thread about an hour after I posted it (as I usually do around here.)

Plus, she is made up during her school years and immediately after as someone dorky, shy, introverted, and unattractive.

They were just having fun and trying out their material/methods before going after Sydney.

Never Been Kissed didn’t come out until three years later. Did you have a psychic vision or really foot drag seeing Scream?

I did not see Scream in the movies. I never go to movies as I am cheap and I know I can see them for free if I’m patient.
