Hey! Wallace is back!
Oh…just for 30 seconds at the beginning. I want more Wallace!
Overall, good episode. Looks like the coaches’ death is connected to Dean O’Dell.

As soon as Dick mentioned Vegas, I knew he’d end up married. At least it doesn’t appear that they’ll drag out that storyline longer than this episode. Also that girl is such a horrible, selfish person for leaving her kid sister with some guy! She deserves to be married to Dick.
Mna, even when Wallace is in an episode, he’s not really in the episode. And this one was about the basketball team! Maybe he’ll be in it more next week.
That was the most awkward elevator ride in the history of the world. So hilarious.
Normally cute kids are the kiss of death, but this particular plot device worked well. I think it helped that the little girl acted her age and wasn’t wise beyond her years or anything.
Do they have Amy’s Ice Cream shops in California? They’re worth driving all the way to Texas for a waffle cone, but they got back pretty fast.
What was with the plug for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,a movie I’d never heard of? After the show was over I flipped to HBO to see what was on and it was this movie I’d never heard of called Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. (Check HBO East primetime 13-February). Was that a coincidence?
I liked the episode, though. Keith is close to figuring out that the Dean visited his wife at the hotel which is making her look quite guilty. Dick being more responsible than Logan and then blowing that by getting married in Vegas to that chick. Classic Dick.
Loved the interaction between Logan and the little girl (Heather?). That really washes away the last bit of doubt that, at heart, Logan’s really a good guy. And I loved the song dedication bit. Nice that Roni actually heard it, too. Too bad it didn’t melt any hearts.
They could just as easily had a cardboard cutout playing Wallace’s part this week. As you noted, **cbawlmer, **even when he’s there hes not really there.
There seems to be a strange economy in the VM universe. One (ostensible) murder is worth a third of a season story arc; another murder is a two-part mystery of the week episode. Odd. (Dean O’Dell’s murder is ostensible only because it’s officially, at this point, still a suicide.)
The scene where Veronica and Keith read Dean O’Dell’s letter of recommendation was quite touching. Both actors conveyed the feeling that they were motivated on the case by it. Really strong stuff.
The coaches son may not be the murderer, but he’s not all right by any stretch of the imagination. The preview seemed to confirm that, but that was the vibe even through last night’s episode.
Loved it that Keith laid the hammer to Mindy. She’s shady and he knows it, and that’s good. Conversely, Prof. Landry deftly dodged two attempts to catch him in a lie last night; he either proved himself innocent, or a very cool customer.
Good episode, with promise for more of same next week.
If she is guilty, she had absolutely no reason to go to Keith Mars, a very well-respected PI, to ask for help solving her husband’s murder, which had already been declared a suicide by the inept Neptune PD. Unless…
she is the beneficiary of an insurance policy that will only pay off if Dean O’Dell did not commit suicide. (But then that doesn’t explain why she would have made his death look like a suicide in the first place.) I give up.
Didnt she say when she first hired him that the reason was because the insurance wouldn’t pay out?
Wikipedia seems to agree with my memory, but I can’t find any actual transcripts of the episode.
Let me second how great the scene with the elevator was, and how generally well done the whole girl-and-Logan plotline was.
I had completely forgotten that we already knew the Dean was in the hotel room arguing with his wife. That’s one advantage of watching the show on DVD… much easier to remember things that happened 4 or 5 episoes ago.
I guess we’re meant to assume (bearing in mind that I didn’t watch the preview for next week) that the coach’s son escapes, they find the hollowed out book, and assume that what she smuggled him wasn’t cookies?
Just wanted to add that I had never heard of this when my son brought it home. Found it very enjoyable and imagine most folks who enjoy VM would enjoy it. Give it a shot.
Like LateComer, I too checked the listings. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is playing widely on HBO right now. Talk about timing.
Yes, Mindy’s stated reason for hiring Keith is an insurance policy that won’t pay because of suicide.
A thought occurred to me as I re-watched the ep last night: the two factual checkpoints that back up Mindy and Dr. Landry’s story–the toothpaste phone call, and watching Kiss Kiss Bang Bang–could both be agreed upon, “get our story straight” items. The toothpaste phone call could have been a call placed from anywhere, besides the hotel gift shop; that could be just the cover story. And Kiss Kiss Bang Bang could have been chosen as the PPV movie because they had already watched it prior to that night and knew enough of the plot to use it to cover their tracks. These being the formulations of either Mindy or Landry, or both in combination.
I think the real crux of the matter is, what did Cyrus say to them when he was in the hotel room? Did he threaten them with something that made murder seem a better alternative? I suspect that somehow, the contents of that argument will be revealed to us in the coming weeks.
The elevator scene really was terrific. Just the back and forth facial expressions were priceless, let alone the conversation. And the girl who played Heather really was a delight.
Speaking of which, in the preview for next week, I love the shot of Veronica’s little girl glee when Cliffy comes to bail her out of jail. Very cute. And yes, I assume Lamb found the hollowed out book and figured Veronica slipped the kid a skeleton key or something.
I’m definitely looking forward to next week’s show.
