I admit up front that horror movies are not really on my list of preferences, but I don’t think I’m an idiot either. I took my wife to see S3 the other night as she loves horror flicks. I’ve seen the first two also. I didn’t hate the move, as a matter of fact, it was kind of fun to watch. What got me was the amount of crap they dug up from the first two movies. I understand they have to relate them, but I felt like they pulled up so much information that I couldn’t keep up with it all.
Anyone else feel that way? I felt like I needed scripts to 1 and 2 to understand who everybody was.

From what I’ve heard(though I have only seen the first two movies) S3 isn’t really that great at all. The screenplay was written by a different writer for one. As for having to know the previous movies…well, it is a sequel after all.
I knew the other movies, but I felt like I was watching a bad soap opera ala “Tootsie”.
"I’m not really your uncle Fred, I’m actually your little sister, Clara who fell in the well 20 years ago! "
“Well that’s good, because I’m actually the illigitimate daughter of your father!”
“Wait! If you’re actually my illigitimate daugher, then why did your mother say that you were killed in a car crash two episodes ago!”
“Becauce I was in LOVE with Uncle Fred, and I’m carrying his baby!”
Scream 3 was OK, though not as good as the first two. The murder sequences were oddly disappointing. I recall that the director said in an interview, “There’s a lot of violence, but we don’t linger on it.” Well, in this sort of movie, you’re supposed to linger on it (she said morbidly). Anyway…
IMO, you have to have seen Scream for S3 to make sense, but you could safely skip Scream 2. Which would be a shame, because it’s the best of the series; but you can understand S3 without it. Not that any of it is terribly complicated or anything, you understand.
(The scariest thing in Scream 3? Seeing how desperately skinny the once-lovely Courteney Cox has become.)

Cat,
You are so right about that. Courtney Cox used to be on my top five list of attractive women. Not anymore.
