I just have to get this off my chest - I hate messing with the freakin’ clocks twice a year. “Oh, let’s change the clocks to an hour ahead of time.” “Oh, six months later, let’s just change them back again.”
I HATE IT!!!
We can’t just arbitrarily decide one day that the clocks need to be moved an hour ahead or back; my body knows what time it is, and it doesn’t like it when I try to tell it differently twice a year. Can’t we just decide which time works best and just leave the clocks on that time FOREVER?!?
I’ve lived without changing the clocks, and I’ve lived with it, and you know what? There is no benefit to changing them, and lots of reasons not to (the increase in traffic accidents after the “spring forward” being one).
Yes, I know this is a lame rant; it’s my pet peeve, though. Maybe I should start a campaign to get Alberta to just stay on non-DST time year round. C’mon, all you Saskatchewan transplants - rise up and join the cause!
I agree. Daylight savings was invented to save energy during WWII, and it is completely useless now. We should get rid of it, but for some reason farmers really like it, or something.
It’s funny you mention the farmers, because in Saskatchewan, where I spent the first 25 years of my life, we didn’t change the clocks, and Saskatchewan is known first and foremost as an agriculture-based province. So, who exactly needs to mess with the clocks? Who is it that is causing us to perpetuate this outdated ritual that I find so distasteful?
Where did this story originate and how in the world does it propogate?
Farmers hate DST. When the clocks advance, the guys coming around to pick up milk have to move up with the clock to meet the hours in their contract with the dairy. But, as I have heard several angry dairy farmers relate, “No one told the cows they needed to be ready to milk an hour earlier!”
I have never heard a farmer (even a non-dairy farmer) ever voice a favorable opinion of DST.
(I am neither a devout fan nor a devout opponent, but I cannot figure out why the farmers always take the heat for this decision.)

You can also find more information on the purpose and history at http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/c.html, including the fact that Ben Franklin thought up the idea originally (what a guy!).
Jeeze, I used to LIKE Ben Franklin. So, we screw around with the clocks to get more productive daylight in summer, eh? I’m all for leaving it on DST, then. Moving the clocks back for winter makes no difference, AFAIC. The sun rises at 9 or 10 am, sets at 3 or 4 pm; big difference, since we’re all at work and never see the sun in winter anyway.
personally, I think we should have the “fall back” part more often. Sure, eventually we’d all be awake at night and asleep during the day, but we’re talking about an extra hour of sleep people!!!
