Go to the Civ4 thread in Cafe Society to read about my troubles getting the fraken pre-order version from amazon.com.
Well, I’ve never had a problem getting Colonization to work on modern machines. I just install it and fire it up. Works every time.
I keep hoping that Sid re-visits Colonization the way he did with Pirates.
Note to anyone who is still going to be playing Civ 3:
Have you tried the Double Your Pleasure mods? I feel these are almost the equivalent of a whole new upgrade of the game. There is a separate mod for each of the 3 commercial releases of Civ 3, and they literally double the number of units, advances, city improvements, resources, wonders, specialists, etc. etc., with significant changes to many of the originals. This significantly changes the way the game plays, and many of the innovations from the mod have been included in Play The World and Conquests.
Give the mod a try while you’re waiting for Civ 4 to be fixed. I think you’ll like it!
Right after this post, I started trying to download the game online instead of using my old CD. I got it to work woo hoo.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I had almost forgotten about that. The ending was such a huge disappointement, even more so when I happened to dig around and find out what the original ending was supposed to be like. I can’t believe the crammed four hours of playtime into five minutes of text.
In other news: Fuck all of you playing civ4 right now. A few friends and I all pre-ordered it so we could play it today on our day off, and everyone is happily playing it but me. Also: Fuck you, USPS. Takes four days to deliver a package my ass.
My virtual cry was for all you poor people who bought the game already. I’ve been through it so many times I’m a pro now, literally. I became a PC tech based on years and years of getting my stupid PC games to work. I’ve been dealing with the tweaks, patches, fixes, and sacrifical offerings of the PC gaming world for about 20 years now and its only marginally better than when it all started.
To this day I still don’t really understand how this situation happens. You have teams of talented people all working together on this project. I can understand that ATI (nVidia is guilty too) throws a wrench in the works when they make a change 2 weeks before launch but you would think that the change itself wouldn’t be so drastic that it would cause this problem. What did they do, rewrite the driver from scratch in a new language? And wouldn’t a developer working on such a major release at least have a really, really good contact at both ATI and nVidia who would tell them to watch out for the new driver release because it will pretty much derail all their graphic work up until this point? Hell I’d hire ninjas to hang out at their offices if necessary.
Its a real shame because in my heart I believe the PC to be the best gaming platform in the world…aside from the technial problems.
Actually, Bong, it turned out to have nothing at all to do with what video driver you were using on your ATI card. You can run the game with the newest version, or indeed with several versions back.
