Screw you, Vizio.

I have done some consulting in the LCD industry and this is correct. What you may be missing is that they are made to different specs for different final users. Higher end TV brands like Sony and Samsung get the better panels. Cheaper brands get the stuff that don’t meet the quality standards for the other guys or are made more cheaply in other respects. Just because they are made in the same factory doesn’t mean that they are the same quality. The same is true for the other electronic components and things like polarizer films that go on the front and back of the panels.

BTW, “nova” means the same thing in English as it does in Spanish. It’s an exploding star. To think that someone would make a decision to not buy a car that they would have bought otherwise if not for the name because the name is a pun is beyond idiotic. Well, it’s obviously not a big brand but the “cheap rip-off” tip off is when the name is imitating/misspelling of one of the big one, like say “Zony”, or a conflation of real names, like “Magnasung”.

Since you are an LCD expert, I have a question: in the mid-1990’s , Philips invested a TON of money in LCD displays-they teamed up with Sharp (Japan), in an attempt to make large LCD panels. I gather this effort failed, as all Philips TVs now use Korean-made LCDs-is this correct?

And I don’t disagree with that (a good counter example is Snopes’ “if a dining set was marketed in the US as NOTABLE, no one would REALLY think the set didn’t come with a table”) . It seemed obvious to me that Nava was kinda tongue in cheek silly with her first post, but people just fucking jumped on her. And spare me any “this is the Pit blahblahblah”, because the reaction was so out of proportion to her “crime” that I was looking like our little  guy reading the thread. I think she’s just taking the piss in her replies.

I’m not really an LCD expert. I’m an expert in a niche technology that is peripherally involved in information displays plus I didn’t even get involved in this until '02. So, I have no idea. Sorry.

Here’s some television brands that aren’t seen on store shelves in the United States.

Electrohome - is that some gay superhero?
Bauer - sounds like the English 'bow her", which is what you do before doggie-style sex.
Cello - is it as durable as cellophane? Also sounds like “cellar”, or the basement, which could imply low quality. No thanks.
Hannspree - sounds like “hand spree” or “hand free”, both associated with masturbation.
Medion - that’s like the English “median”, or average.

Our Vizio crapped out about a month after purchase. But it was due to a thunderstorm where we think it got whacked by lightning, as the cable box also died.

After troubleshooting we called the company and they fixed it in about a week. Turned out just one little part got fried and need to be swapped out.

It was less of a pain getting the repair than getting a new cable box, to be honest. I’m a fan of Vizio’s service.
