Didn’t take long, did it? Well, it’s no surprise.
Kurds capture Kirkuk
And the same day …
On Wednesday, Powell agreed that Turkey could send a small group of monitors into Kirkuk, but said he told Gul the United States would take care of having the Kurds pull back.
How’s that going to work? Will the 173rd Airborne be assigned to expel the Kurds from Kirkuk so the Turks can get control of the oil fields? Why would the Kurds give it up themselves?
I don’t think the US is planning to have the Kurds withdraw anytime soon. Turkey has insulted the US twice recently. First, by refusing to let us attack through Turkey, and second, by entering Iraq. The first was a mere irritation, but the second demands vengance. If anything happens at all, its the Turks who will be shoved out of the area…

Vengence? For what? Sending in some observers to watch the situation?
The last thing the US wants is Iraqi Kurds declaring their independence and creating a civil war in Iraq or Turkey or causing Turkey to invade Iraq.
