It’s pretty much the same thing as using the autodraft for a snake draft. Instead of setting your priority in terms of draft rankings, you set them as draft values. The computer then (tries to) draft a team for you by bidding up to your max values. It’s not ideal because the computer will bid every single player up to your max, so the rest of the room has a lot more say in your roster construction than you do, but if you set the values carefully, you’ll get the guys you prioritize.
Auctions are a lot more fun with 100% participation. In any case, since it’s too late to change the draft date (that’s why I start asking if the draft date works for people a month ahead of the draft), I went ahead and replaced him with someone eager to attend the draft.
Anyway, we’ve got a reliable player who sometimes even accidentally does the right thing in fantasy, welcome Really Not All That Bright.
I don’t know if there’s anyone here that hasn’t done an auction, but if you haven’t, I suggest you do a mock draft sometime soon to grasp the mechanics. It’s quite simple - people nominate players to bid on, people bid any amount of their virtual $200 on any players, and whoever has the highest bid when the timer runs out gets that player for that cost. You could grab the top 3 picks in the draft for $60 each if you wanted, as your strategy, or you could get a ton of $15 guys. There are lots of viable strategies.
Pay attention to every pick. It’s not like a snake draft where you might be out of the draft for 20 picks at a time. You may not even like a player that much, but then you’ll think “well shit, he’s only going for $22, I have to bid for that much”. You’ll be involved in every single pick of the draft, which is part of the fun of auctions.
It doesn’t really matter who you nominate in what order until the very end when players are going for $1 or $2. It doesn’t matter if you nominate Adrian Peterson or Calvin Johnson first. And yet, for some reason, even though it goes in order, and even though it doesn’t really matter, every year there are some people who are totally caught off guard by the fact that it’s their time to nominate and they have no idea what to do, and they take up the whole 30 seconds. It doesn’t sound that bad until it happens literally 50 or 60 times, adding a half hour of empty space to the draft.
There’s no reason, aside from the very last few picks, to be slow nominating a player. Just pick one. Someone will outbid you anyway, and you can decide at that point if you even want the player. Watch for your turn - it’s always in order, displayed at the top of the screen - have a few players put in your nominate queue, and when it’s your turn, just hit the button. Simple.
Does anyone have any questions about our draft?
We using Mumble this year?
Ah yes, I forgot. The last couple of years I’ve been hosting whoever wants to come in a voice chat program during the draft so we could chat. It’s free and easy to set up. If you don’t have a headset, you can sign in just to listen to keep up with the conversation, and I think there are iOS and Android versions, so you can use it on your phone or tablet.
You can download it here (or your phone’s app store). Run through the setup wizard. Set a push to talk key even if you don’t have a mic (some people have a weird glitch the first time they log in where they have to hit the transmit button once before they can hear everyone else).
Press the connect button, click add new, and then use the following information. Remove the asterisks from the address name, I’m just putting those there in case of random web crawlers come across the info.

PM me if you have any trouble, I’ll try to be there at least 45 minutes before the draft to help people get it all set up. I do recommend trying it - I think last year we got about half to 2/3rds of the league in there and it keeps the draft more interesting.
Ok, sorry to put this on you guys at the last minute, but something came up and I can’t make the draft tonight, which I know sucks because it’s an auction.
I can either withdraw, if you can find a replacement (or if Beef still wanted to get out), or I’ll set up my predraft values to make my absence as non-intrusive as possible. I’ll do that anyway, in fact, right now.
Just stay in and pre-rank. If I can find a replacement, I can boot you out of the league and replace you without your intervention. But most likely, given that rosters have to be set in about 2 and a half hours, I probably can’t find a replacement. So just pre-rank as extensively as you can.
Ok, I’ve preranked. Sorry again for the trouble.
I don’t see the button to enter the draft.
ETA: now I see that it’s loading.
For anyone still watching, feel free to join Beef and I on Mumble. It’s a nice addition to the draft experience, easy to set up, and will certainly pass the time between waiting for people to waste their 30 seconds nominating someone they won’t end up drafting.
I have Too Many Quarterbacks (Rodgers, Kap, Dalton). I’d be happy to roll with any two of them and I want to upgrade significantly at wideout (studs, not depth.) Make me ein offre.
What’d you guys think of the draft? I enjoyed it, and I’ll write a self review later after the HHM draft. I’ll hold another vote next year, with the same thresholds for switching the draft, to see if people want to go back to a snake draft next year.
I prefer auction drafts. They just take so damn long. I was a bit meh about this one because I waited too long to start spending money.
I think there’s a place for both auction and snake drafts - auctions basically add another skill. Good at fantasy football in terms of evaluating players and making moves, vs. good at the specific skill set that auction drafts require. To some degree they’re getting synonymous but they really aren’t the same thing by definition. Anyways, auction drafts are a lot of fun until that point an hour and a half into the draft where all of the good players are gone, there are 84 rosters spots that need to be filled, and because of how the auction timers work it’s going to take an hour to fill those slots with guys who are probably being dropped after week 1.
I like my team, except for the somewhat depressing fact that I ended up with enough cash that I could have had ADP instead of Arian Foster. So we’ll call that a mistake. I like my depth and don’t love my top end: I have two second-third tier QBs, four second tier WRs and three second tier RBs, and my only true stud is a Gronk that is going to get hurt. The kind of team that has a good chance at third or fourth place but won’t get near winning without a few lucky pickups.
People were paying way too much for QBs in general past the top three or four. I think a lot of that is because we have the extra bench slot per team, and people would rather use that on a backup QB than a sleeper at another position. Then again, who am I to say anything: ADP, McCoy, and Lacy were the stone cold bargains of the draft and I’m not sure if I put in a single bid on any of them.
You can have Kaepernick cheap. Maybe we can work out something involving a TE swap? I think “second tier” is probably a generous description of Alex Smith.
We only start one QB… Kaepernick and Smith are both just wasted roster spots unless someone goes down. To be fair, my QB (RG3) is among the highest risk of “going down”, but still. I think the only one you’re going to be able to extort is Carson Palmer’s Great Old Ones.
I am attempting to extort him now. I thought I might offer you something a bit more reasonable in the meantime. Anyway, if RGIII doesn’t improve substantially over last season I don’t think you’ll want to start him even if he’s healthy.
Draft results!

I enjoy auction drafts but I don’t see why everyone loves them so much more than Standard Snake Drafts. I know a lot of people hate getting a “bad pick” but as long as you’re close to one of the ends it really isn’t too bad. Auction drafts tend to take a lot of the emotion out of my picks as I will generally go with value instead of trying to build something on feeling. Like Kiros, I think that can make the draft a lot of fun until you get to the late point when no player is going for more than $4-6. Really I could go either way as far as the draft type goes.
Overall, I am pretty happy with my team. I thought I spent what I had well and I like my WRs a lot. The extra flex will be helpful and it should make some of those tough weekly decisions easier for me.
Clearly, my team is not that deep at RB. I usually like to have consistency at the RB position in this league but with an auction draft it’s really easy to invest a lot of money in a player who may or may not produce for a full season. Additionally, I have basically blown my top RB pick almost every year of this league. One of the nice things about going value over filling a position is staying away from high risks. Murray is definitely injury prone and Bush has his issues but I feel very comfortable with them being used together. Also, I know folks are down on MJD this year but he is definitely worth Sproles money as the starter in Oakland. Not too sure how my RB situation is going to play itself out but I am open to making some potential WR-RB or QB2-RB moves.
I was happy to get Luck for under $25 in this league. After the first folks went, I figured there would be about a $20 drop in price but I wasn’t sure. It was nice to see that price difference come true. I have seen Luck go for a lot in my other leagues but I get that the whole QB situation is suspect after the top guys. Personally, I do not see a lot wrong with the QB values in our league. Foles is really the only one I thought was a little high but if he does near as well as he did last season, then that’s a good value for him.
