SDMB All-Pro fantasy football league 2012

Last year’s thread

We are not yet recruiting - everyone has a chance to take your slot from last year. If you want to keep track of recruiting leagues, go to the general FF discussion thread.

The draft has a prelimary scheduled date of Thu Aug 30 9:45 Eastern. If there are issues with this, speak up now, and we can try to accomodate.

I plan on using the sunday through tuesday waiver system for free agents that we used last year. Yahoo automatically puts all players on waivers as of 1pm Sunday, so you can submit a claim rather than having the person closest to the computer pick them up as free agents. We’ve done this for a while now. It appears that rather than having a fixed waiver beginning at 1pm Sunday, instead it’s at the time the game starts for that player, so we won’t need special rules for games early in the week.

It also appears that we can have a randomized draft order before the draft - what we’d done previously through a random process is now built into yahoo.

The FAAB system with $100 in monopoly money also worked well last year.

I’m also going to keep the commissioner approval on trades for all the reasons I outlined last year. I will automatically and quickly approve any reasonable trade. If there’s something fishy about a trade we’ll discuss it, but there’s no real chance of a trade being rejected in this league - we’re all serious players, no one will say “fuck it” and throw their season, we all know enough not to get ripped off, and as we’ve proved, people tend not to want to rock the boat and vote against trades anyway.

Practically, this means you have later in the week to work out trades. Previously if you worked out a trade on friday evening, that trade wouldn’t go through by the time Sunday’s games started, so you’d be screwed if someone got hurt late in the week or if you just didn’t have time to conduct the negotiations. Now you can make trades up until Sunday morning and still get them through before the game starts.

I’m usually around early Sunday mornings to push trades through, but if you make a very late trade on Saturday night or Sunday morning, I may not be able to approve it in time. If that happens, both of you should make your intent clear “I plan on starting player X I just traded for in place of player Y” and I can retroactively make the rosters reflect that.

If there are any problems with these policies, feel free to voice them and we’ll discuss it.

We have everyone but brianjedi signed up. He usually signs up late, but we’re into August - there’s only so long we can wait, because if we need to get a replacement we need someone that hasn’t committed to too many leagues already. This is already pretty late to allow signups.

I sent an e-mail to his board listed e-mail, but I don’t know if it’s current. Nothing else I can do. I’ll give him a few days.

Excellent, everyone is signed up for last year. Any rule/setting change proposals?

So yahoo used to randomize draft order a half hour before the draft, but at some point we decided it’d be nice to know your spot earlier than that so you could plan, so we’d have people submit randomized lists and match them up. But that’s unnecesary now - yahoo allows you to generate the drafting order randomly once the league is full. So I did so.

Our draft order.

  1. Court Jesters
  2. No Use For A Name
  3. The Gridbirds
  4. Exploding Pancakes
  5. The Great Old Ones
  6. Kelly’s Heroes
  7. Tazmanian Devils
  8. Isotopes
  9. New York Fanboys
  10. Frosted_Lightning
  11. Chitwood
  12. Omni’s Omnipotents

I’m going to post this to all my leagues.

In our very first draft in the auction league, we ended up running the auction in voice chat like an actual auction. That was before yahoo had auction drafts. Anyway, we don’t actually have to hold the draft that way anymore of course, but it was kind of cool to have everyone in the same place able to chat about the draft as it went, it was pretty fun.

I used to only run a free ventrilo server which has a max of 8 people, so I never thought about using it again, but now we run a 15 man SDMB server, so we could fit everyone in there. So I was thinking it would be fun if we all hopped on to voice chat during the draft.

If there’s interest, closer to the draft I’ll post the server information and help anyone who needs to set it up. We’d be using ventrilo which is free. It’d be cool if everyone had a headset (or webcam mic or whatever) to talk, but even if you don’t, you could still log in and listen to the rest of us and respond in the text chat of the draft app.

Anyway, just an idea to float up there. I think it’d be fun.

I hate the #1 slot. Too long until the second pick, too much emphasis on a player whom, if I pick him, will be injured by week 3.

Apologies but I have to drop out of this league. Commish can boot me.

I’m game, but can we use GoToMeeting instead of Ventrilo? I couldn’t get that to work for voice, only could listen, and GTM would allow folks without headsets to dial-in.

I have no familiarity with go to meeting so I’m worried day of problems would be unresolvable. Ventrilo is generally pretty reliable, and people without mics can still tune in to listen. If you want help setting it up send me a PM.

Anyway, I could use some help recruiting for Ellis Dee’s spot. If you know someone around the board that might be interested, send them a PM - I’m strapped for time all week.

Sorry, can’t join. I am busy on the 30th and can not make the draft.

thanks for the offer.

First batch of invites got nothing, I’m going to widen the net. It’s hard to land people this late in the game since they’re usually all committed to several leagues already.

If anyone has an off-board friend who’d be reliable and who wants a tough competition, you can invite them.

Overly Sentimental is not an SDMBer but he’s played with us for several years. He’s good and reliable. I gave him the last spot. We’re good to go.

I use GTM for work every day, it’s an enterprise class cloud solution. There won’t be any issues, it’s considerably more robust than Ventrilo and doesn’t require anyone to install any local clients as it’s mostly browser/java based. I could host the call.

Normally I would be down for this but I am actually facilitating an online training during our draft so I will not be able to be on mic. I will be talking a bit in the chat box though.

Hello all, I assume that I am drafting in the 9-hole?
As for the draft software, I’ll be drafting from school, and mikeless, and somewhat inflexible in terms of software availablity. So anything web-based is fine.
Looking forward the the season.

Yeah, no need to re-pick draft slots, you’ll just inheret Ellis’.

Omni, how does the GTM stuff work? Browser based? Free? Does someone have to host it on a local machine? How many people can log on?

You’ll have to explain how it works Omni if you want to use it - I’m not familiar with it and we’ve only got a day to go.

Draft is in less than 24 hours.

As I said before, it’d be cool if we could all get on voice chat during the draft. I know some of you won’t have microphones but you should all have speakers so you can at least listen to the conversation and chime in with typing. It should be interesting.

Get ventrilo - it’s a free download. Install it. It will either ask you to create a user name off the bat, or on the main screen you can click the -> next to the user name dropdown to create one.

Once that’s done, select your user name, and click the -> next to the servers box. Under that, enter

Hostname : vent3.gamespeak.com
Port 4303
Password is d*******s - as in, 1920s style d_______s. I don’t want to post the password openly in case some bot crawls over it. If you can’t figure out the password PM me.
Now click setup, check “push to talk hotkey” in the top left, and pick a key to activate when you want to talk in the hotkey tab on the left middle. Then when you hold down that key, you’ll transmit.

That’s pretty much it. It should work smoothly and be fun. Try to set it up today - connect to the server and make sure you connect. You’ll see Room 1, Room 2, and Room 3 along with your user name above them if you did it right.

In the setup page, click the monitor button. You should start seeing numbers scroll by - if the numbers go up when you speak, it’s set up correctly. If they stay near 0, something is wrong - your mic is muted, it isn’t configured correctly, something like that.

Anyway, get it working tomorrow, and if you need tech support send me a PM.

I don’t have a microphone but I think I have it set up so I can listen in.

I did this last year since my mic was acting up. Worked just fine and people still responded to my chat text.
