SDMB All-pro fantasy football league 2013

Last year’s thread

Starting with the same rules as last year, open to amendment if anyone has any suggestions. Commish approval on trades, if trade intentions are clearly stated (who you’ll bench, who you’ll start) before gameday, I will go back and retroactively fix rosters to your wishes. This means that you can get trades done later in the week and not worry about whether the commish is around to approve them or if you need to check in again before gametime if I do approve them Saturday night or Sunday morning. Although obviously set the rosters yourselves if you can.

Draft time is scheduled at the same relative time as last year, Tuesday Aug 27 at 9pm eastern. If you need it adjusted, say so immediately.

Looking forward to this league again - I love the settings pretty much more than any other league I’m in.

Also - He Hate Me may be looking for two new owners if BabaBooey and Omnicient don’t show up. PM me if interested.

They both have posted in the thread.

Any openings in this league?

We’ve got 11 people returning from last year with no word so far on brianjedi/Gridbirds. He hasn’t logged into the SDMB in 4 months, and because of the way yahoo hides e-mail addresses by default, I can’t contact him other than the initial invite. Given that, we probably can’t wait up for him. This league tends to be very stable and only recruits a new player every other year or so. I know there’s been interest expressed in the past to be a replacement should we lose anyone, so I’m going to glance through the previous threads to see who wanted in. If I can’t find them or they’re not interested I’ll open it to general recruitment.

Can’t wait for this league to get started.

Hoping to stay consistent and have a good season after a garbage one. Last year was a rough one for me in FF across all of my leagues. Clearly my “experiment” failed so I will likely go back to my tried and true method of drafting.

Yep. My “listen to Matthew Berry and draft Vick in the 1st round” strategy from two years ago was such an abject disaster that I’m going back to the more accepted method of taking two kickers and two defenses with four of my first six picks.

Wow, that’s a solid strategy - hard to beat. I’m thinking of putting Aaron Hernandez as my #1 in case he’s acquitted.

How do you guys feel about adding a starting roster spot? Maybe a 2nd RB or another flex? It seems like, to me, that with the 2 WR, 1 RB, 1 W/R lineup that it allows you to pretty much set your lineup every week with your top guys without having to strategize much with your bench or free agent pick ups or trades. Any thoughts?

I agree, and I meant to getting around to setting up a poll question about that. We’ve got a good scoring system but our rosters have always been too shallow. I might even suggest allowing 2 more flex spots - WRs have been gaining in value relative to RBs over the last few years (and also with .4 ppr) so adding more flex spots would make an interesting way of allowing different roster strategies.

I would be against it. I think it really cuts down on randomness, and makes the draft even more important. There are plenty of leagues out there with more roster spots - I think the charm of this one is the limited flexibility.

Kiros is coming back to join us to fill our 12th spot and replace Gridbirds/brianjedi. I hope he’s doing alright but he’s not on the boards and hasn’t joined the league, so we can’t wait for him. If he comes back next year, we’ll give him a priority to rejoin if anyone else leaves.

Kiros was with us through the first 4 years of this league.

Let’s discuss roster sizes. I put 2 polls in the league page itself, one is whether or not we should add roster spot(s) and the other is, if we do, what kind.

Our current rosters:

QB
WR
WR
RB
RB/WR flex
K
D/ST
7 bench

This is one player short of the typical/standard FF roster which is typically 2 RB/3 WR. I do think we could have at least 1 extra spot added, it rewards greater depth, better overall rosters, and makes you make more decisions from week to week. It can sometimes be too easy to autopilot in this league and just set your studs and leave it.

I actually like the idea of adding 2 WR/RB flex spots - one can be WR/RB/TE maybe, doesn’t really matter. So it’d be RB/WR/WR/Flex/Flex/Flex. That would create really varied roster types and interesting draft strategies. But that might be too much for people to handle.

One other direction we could go in is having a second QB slot, or a QB/WR/RB flex. That’s a pretty dramatic change, but again it’s one of those things that makes different draft strategies possible. Normal leagues for me have become kind of stale. Changing the roster size/type would definitely shake things up and make it more interesting.

I also created 2 other polls. Do we want to change to an auction draft format this year? I know people tend to want to stick with tradition on this one, and that’s okay, but auction is just flat out better overall and more interesting, so I pretty much push it on all my leagues.

And the last poll was whether we should go to a 2 QB league. This one is fairly drastic, but interesting.

Discuss.

Thanks SenorBeef.

I am intrigued by the idea of the 2 WR, 1 RB, 3 WR/RB proposition and voted for that option in the poll. I understand Munch’s objection but would like to reinvigorate this league with some new vigor. It felt last year that you could set your lineup every week without much thought, severely reducing the amount of time invested. Which, for those of us in multiple leagues, can be good but I think, overall, somewhat lessens the enjoyment.

I also agree that an auction is the preferred method of drafting. However, in the years that I have been in this league we have never had a full complement of owners on draft day, making an auction problematic. So I voted for keeping the standard draft.

I voted against a new position - but voted for one flex should it be implemented. I absolutely don’t want this to be yet another WR/WR/WR/RB/RB/Flex league, so that’s, IMO, the better option.

I also despite 2 QB leagues, unless they’re very small (the league that is, not the QBs).

I am good with adding a new position and I voted to go with a flex option there. However, like Munch, I am against 2 QBs.

The auction vs. standard issue is going to take me a bit to decide on. As much as I enjoy auction drafts, I think that an auction draft with absentee owners could really mess up the fact that this league tends to be competitive from top to bottom.

Hey again, all. Glad to be back. I had a bit of a fantasy football crisis of faith a few years back - I was up to 2 RL money leagues, one league on another message board, and 3 SDMB leagues, and the combined randomness of it all got me way more frustrated than I should have been about fake sports. I’m still not a big fan of FFL compared to some of the other sports, but I’m glad to get back into one of the SDMB leagues as I sit on a much more manageable 3 total this year. Looking forward to the draft next week.

As for added roster spots, I’ll go with whatever you guys want. My longest running money league is relatively shallow (though slightly less so this year as we added a flex spot), while the other one I’m in is kind of stupidly deep, so I already have exposure to both sides of the spectrum anyways. I’ve never actually done a 2 QB league, and I think it’d be kind of fun, but I also think it’d be by far the most drastic of the potential rules changes. However, QB is relatively deep this year, so if it’s ever going to be tried, this might be the year for it.

I voted for an auction. I went back and forth for a bit, but auctions really are the best draft experience - both in terms of enjoyment as well as chance to flex your fantasy skills. It’s also a solid change that doesn’t muck with the settings either, which is a bonus for me.

I voted to add a roster spot.
Personally, I’d like to do a 2-qb league. I’ve never done one before and I enjoy playing with you folks on these SDMB leagues because of their uniqueness.
That being said, this league is relatively ‘normal’, except for the contracted roster size, and I already play a couple of ‘normal’ leagues, as I’m sure most of you do.
Failing that, I’d like to keep the league the way it is.

Adding a roster spot is overwhelming currently at 6-1, with a 3-2 lead for one flex spot over two. Standard draft has a slight lead over auction. We should have 12 votes on everything. I’m going to close the voting sometime tomorrow, so voice your opinion.

We draft in 4 days.

I voted against a roster slot, but if we do add one, I prefer it to be a flex and not a two-QB league.
