I re set the draft order based on our randomized draft replacing Ellis with Overly Sentimental.
#4 is actually a tricky slot to draft in and I think I’m going to waver back and forth until draft time.
About 2.5 hours to go. If anyone needs help setting up ventrilo just post here or PM me. We had 7/10 on there for the auction draft last night and it was fun - it’d be better with full participation.
About 1:25 on that draft, pretty short. Not enough people on vent. Otherwise went pretty smooth. Forgot how fast snake drafts can run compared to auctions.
So the 20 minutes I was logged on before the draft was essentially the amount of time I prepared for this draft. Even still, I’m somewhat happy with the results. Even though I thought it was 1 round longer, and I didn’t get a defense because of that gaffe, I’m relatively confident there will be plenty of decent matchups to make up for that deficiency. My draft:
Kelly’s Heroes
(6) Drew Brees (NO - QB)
(19) Rob Gronkowski (NE - TE)
(30) Wes Welker (NE - WR)
(43) Darren Sproles (NO - RB)
(54) Michael Turner (Atl - RB)
(67) Kenny Britt (Ten - WR)
(78) Reggie Wayne (Ind - WR)
(91) Cedric Benson (GB - RB)
(102) Nate Washington (Ten - WR)
(115) Evan Royster (Was - RB)
(126) Michael Crabtree (SF - WR)
(139) Daniel Thomas (Mia - RB)
(150) Jake Locker (Ten - QB)
(163) Carson Palmer (Oak - QB)
(174) Dan Bailey (Dal - K)
QB: Drafting #6 is tough. The top 3 RBs have been taken, and both Rodgers and Brady have been taking. The clear answer is Calvin Johnson - but I wanted to hold off and stock up on WRs later, since there are SO MANY wide receivers this year. Drew Brees has been the picture of consistency the last 5 years, there’s no reason he’s not going to produce again this year. My backup plan is Locker and Palmer, one of which is going to get cut for a defense after this weekend. Not great choices, but if Brees goes down, there isn’t much I can do to salvage the season anyway.
RB: I wanted to load up on a couple reliable RBs, but it just didn’t pan out that way in the draft. Sproles is a guy I cut last year after Week 1 because I didn’t want to deal with the RB situation in New Orleans. Clearly, that was my downfall. I don’t think Sproles repeats last year’s performance, but he will produce. Turner is also down in many rankings, but he was the best available at the time. Luckily in this league you can get by with just 1 RB, making this a little less of a gamble. I love my backups though - Benson’s the starter in GB (which admittedly doesn’t mean much), Thomas could become the go-to guy and rack up 1,000 yards, and Royston is…well crap - he’s a Shannihan back. Oh well.
WR: I love what I got for when I got them. Welker is a top 10 player in a full PPR league - getting him in the 3rd round in a .5 PPR league is fantastic value. Kenny Britt was an absolute steal since we’ve found out he’s only going to miss a game this season. And if he’s rusty, I have Nate Washington waiting in the wings (I’m slightly worried about making the wrong decision between the two every single week, though…). Reggie Wayne is a big wild card - he could be completely done, he could catch 95 passes. I’ll take that chance on my WR3. Crabtree is a lottery pick that I don’t particularly love, but I didn’t spend much on him.
TE: Gronkowski will not produce what he did last year. But I think he’s going to at least pay me back for spending a 2nd round pick on him, if not more.
(10) Larry Fitzgerald (Ari - WR)
Fitzgerald catches everything thrown his way. Happy to start off my draft with this pick (especially since it was on auto-draft at the time).
(15) Marshawn Lynch (Sea - RB)
Here’s hoping he can stay reasonably healthy this season.
(34) Peyton Hillis (KC - RB)
A bit of a reach but I wanted to make sure I had a solid RB option to backup the injury prone Lynch. If Hillis is as happy in KC as off-season interviews suggest, he should do well splitting carries with Charles.
(39) Tony Romo (Dal - QB)
Romo is a consistently productive QB who has pretty low turnover numbers. I expect solid numbers out of him this season and will be happy with a steady week-to-week performance.
(58) DeSean Jackson (Phi - WR)
A lot of folks are staying away from Jackson because of his attitude and sub par performance last season. Now that he has settled all of the contract issues, he should be back to his old self. Granted if Vick goes down, so will Jackson’s numbers but I will enjoy his productivity while it lasts.
(63) Frank Gore (SF - RB)
I think this is a great deal. The Niners backfield looks similar to the Saints favorite game of RB roulette, but I really do not think Jacobs and James will take away too much of Gore’s carries. Gore has proven to be a consistent producer so I expect him to work out quite nicely in the 2 slot for me.
(82) Tony Gonzalez (Atl - TE)
I hate having a TE that is basically a coin toss so I feel pretty safe with Tony. He isn’t going to put up anything absurd but Ryan uses him as a consistent option.
(87) Joel Dreessen (Den - TE)
(106) Lance Moore (NO - WR)
The Saints love to air it out and Moore puts up numbers and production that makes him way less stressful to have than Henderson.
(111) San Francisco (SF - DEF)
Niners have a great day and they are basically in tact. I enjoy picking DEF based on matchup but there is something nice about having steady week-to-week numbers.
(130) Santana Moss (Was - WR)
RG3 might provide a bit of resurgence to Moss.
(135) Andy Dalton (Cin - QB)
No complaints about having Dalton as my backup QB.
(154) Doug Baldwin (Sea - WR)
(159) Ronnie Hillman (Den - RB)
I will be keeping on eye on his progress throughout the season. Hillman may mature into a nice Flex option by the end of the season.
Yeah, I knew that wasn’t going to happen. Damn. Ran full steam into the Jamal Charles buzzsaw. What a day. I think the Chiefs have figured out what works.
Well, 1-2 and leading the league in points for and points against. Bodes well going into the first bye week.
A race to the bottom. Tazmanian Devils finish at 64.15 while my Court Jesters are at 52.65 with Jeremy Kerley and Owen Daniels yet to play. A bad week all around, with No Use For A Name is way behind all scores with only 37.90 but 4 players tonight. Other notable off weeks are Chitwood with 61.71 and Omnipotents with 66.65, both finals.
At the other end of the spectrum, Exploding Pancakes, the #2 scorer this week, lost a tough one to Kelly’s Heroes, the highest score this week, 121.65 - 149.64. No more undefeateds.
Once again Tony Gonzalez showed up big for me. Niners D also had a pretty impressive game. They are easily the best fantasy D I have ever had. It’s crazy when the defense puts up more points than my offense players.
I had Freeman and Williams sitting on my bench in another league. I am leaving so many points on all my benches. I have a losing record in every league I’m in.
I have 2 defenses on my roster. I started one that gave me -10 points this week.
And it turned out to be the correct decision.
How amazing is that?
Anyway, Tazmanian Devils hasn’t been adjusting his roster the last 2 weeks. To be fair, Jordy Nelson was a late scratch, but he had a bunch of empty/bye slots against me last week. I get that you lose interest in a league when you’re out of it, but it’s not fair to the people who are still fighting for playoff spots to quit mid season. The easy wins against absentee owners can cause one team to unfairly ascend to a playoff spot over a team that had to compete against people doing their best to win, and it upsets league balance. It’s unacceptable not to at least make basic roster moves like not subbing out injured/bye players.
