SDMB Big League 2010

I am basically fucked and, barring a miracle, I’ll end up one game short of the playoffs. I think making that playoff projections post angered the fantasy gods.

This just goes to show what Bill Parcells can do for a team.

As of now, subject to change:

  1. Garcon’s Cedillia
  2. Hamlet
  3. SenorBeef/Exploding Pancakes
  4. Varlos
  5. Taber/Up by three
  6. MTRG/Evil Monkey
  7. Not Sure (I still don’t know who this is)
  8. Munch/Scissor Me Timbers

If Retrovertigo can score 6 out of Tate and the Pats defense, he bumps Munch out of the 8 slot.

If CMFD can manage to beat Taber, Taber would drop from 5 to 6 and CMFD would take the #6 spot. But he needs Welker/Hernandez to outscore Green-Ellis by 43 points.

Or if Taber’s Benjarvus Green-Ellis can outscore Hamlet’s Dustin Keller by 18 points, he’d take the division and Hamlet would be sitting at 5th.

If Brute Squad’s Sanchez and Edwards can outscore Tomlinson by 32 points, Not Sure would lose his playoff spot and Munch and Retrovertigo would both be in.

Think that’s everything.

I am Not Sure. And if Sanchez and Edwards outscore Tomlinson by 30+ points tonight, I will be so fucking pissed.

What a shitty week.

I get my second-highest score of the season, and the third-highest score of the round, and i still lose the game because my opponent gets the second-highest score of the week and gets a combined 60 points out of his tight end, kicker, and defense. :frowning:

We have our playoffs.

  1. Garcon’s Cedillia
  2. Hamlet’s Out of Ideas
  3. Exploding Pancakes (SenorBeef)
  4. Varlos’ Zzzzzz
  5. Up By Three (Taber)
  6. Evil Monkey (MTRG)
  7. Not Sure (brickbacon)
  8. No Use For A Name II (Retrovertigo)

Now you probably all want to fawn over Garcon’s Cedillia because he’s won 12 games (and his team is really good) - but all you can really control is how many points your team scores, how the wins and losses shake out is random. And I still lead the league in points scored.

And what’s more awesome and should result in klingon operas being written about me is that I was the top scorer in the league last year too. If it were random - if I had a 1 in 20 chance of being the top scorer, then I’d only have a quarter of 1 percent chance of hitting that mark. But it’s not random, it is awesome pants.

Those of you who aren’t in the playoff race - go ahead and keep updating your rosters with your best starters from week to week. I’m always interested to see how the league would’ve turned out if we were playing a pure points league - and while normally the league page doesn’t update scoring past the last week of the regular season, the tool Ellis Dee wrote will still track it. So I plan to track scores up through week 16, and week 17 if it’s possible, to see what the results would’ve been if we’d have played a pure points league.

Oh, and if you want to read my team reviews and predictions in retrospect… some hits and misses.

So, those of us who aren’t in the playoffs should continue making roster moves as well? I did for this week forgetting that I was done for the year.

That’s a good question. Generally the teams that aren’t involved in the playoffs stop picking up players and such to let the ones remaining get them. And while it’d be interesting to see who would win a points competition, that isn’t the actual scoring mechanism of our league, so I’m not sure we’d want to change anything for it. But it would be mildly unfair to count scores in the last few weeks when some teams didn’t try their best to improve their rosters while others did.

I don’t know. My preference would be to let everyone manage their roster for the best results and see what the points end up being. I’ve always thought pure points leagues were more fair, but head to head leagues were more interesting from week to week - by being able to figure out the results of both, it’s interesting to see the results of both types of resolution.

What do you guys think?

I tend to agree that the head to head format keeps you in it every week. Even if you start off slow (total points), you still can rattle off a few wins and be competitive.

If I had to pick, in a social format like this league, I would want head to head.

So, I ended up going out of country on vacation last Wednesday, and forgot to set my roster before I went. It’s good to see that in no world would this have mattered, since even my best lineup would have been slaughtered, and since I was already eliminated from getting into the playoff. At least I still had fun this season.

To be clear, I didn’t mean to ask if we should do head to head scoring. Head to head is definitely what everyone prefers.

It’s just… you can do head for head, but then still see the total points everyone scores, so you could easily say “we’re doing head to head, and that will crown our champion, but if we were doing pure points, this is how it would shake out…”

During the regular season, it’s easy enough, yahoo adds up the points for you. But after the regular season ends, yahoo stops doing that. But Ellis Dee wrote the stat tracker application that lets us keep track of scores even through the playoffs, so we can have a full season of the points-based league.

One issue this presents, however, is that typically when the playoffs start, non-playoff teams stop picking up and dropping players in order to let the playoff teams have a crack at everyone. However, if we’re going to play the total points league hypothetical game, that would be a handicap on those players who are out of the playoffs but could still work on their total points score. So I was asking if we should ask non-playoff teams to stop picking up players, or just let everyone try to maximize their score. I’m leaning towards the latter, because I think having a 17 week full points league score to compare would be interesting.

Anyway, I got 2 weeks behind on posting the points. Sorry, I’ve been lazy about my football chores lately.

Go ahead and try to assemble your best team even if you aren’t in the playoffs, including free agents if you need to. I want the points race to be a fair competition even if it’s secondary. Anyone object?

I have no problem with anybody doing it, but I’ll probably just ride my losers out to the end. All I’d have to gain is a move from 17th to 16th.

Agreed. It doesn’t feel right to take players from playoff bound teams.

Ok, so there’s a chance the Giants/Vikings game could be cancelled. I don’t know how they resolve this in fantasy - does everyone get a 0? Are the fantasy results incomplete until the game actually occurs?

In the HHM league, Ellis Dee offered everyone the chance to make conditional roster changes that would be retroactively enforced. Like “if the game is cancelled, start Jacoby ford in Nicks’ spot”.

So if the Giants/Vikes players just put up zeros this week, I will honor any conditional requests like that. Just tell me who you would’ve started instead of your Vikes/Giants players. This can include free agents - if you’re the first one to post that you want them, you get dibs.

I’m not sure if this is the best way to handle this situation because I’m not sure exactly how yahoo handles it, but we don’t have much time and declaring intentions and figuring it out later seems like the way to go.

If the game gets cancelled, I want James Jones over Hakim Nicks.

If the nfl/yahoo figures out how to resolve this game within the fantasy week (like if the game gets played on Tuesday, we’ll just roll with how they choose to do it. These conditionals would only take action if the game is zeroed out.

Ok, NFL.com is saying the game will be moved to Detroit (really, you fucking pussies - play outdoors at University of Minnesota at least) on Monday, so don’t worry about conditionals and set your rosters normally.

This league is pretty deep so I’m going to just ride out the rest of the season with who I have already. Still, I will be updating to make my triumphant crawl from the basement to the top (of the bottom at least).
Good to know they’re at least going ahead with the Giants-Vikes game. I wish I lived in the Detroit area now though because apparently they will be giving away tickets first come first served. As a Giants fan I have no problem with the Vikes homefield advantage being given away.

Garcon’s Cedillia picked a bad week to have an off week. But Retrovertigo is doing very little to capitalize on it.

My game is also pretty close - the two scoring leaders have a real chance of both losing in the first round.

All the games are pretty close actually.
