Oh great. As if the non-shooting dopers didn’t have reason enough to think we’re completely nuts.
I have not named all my firearms. However my M1 is named Betty. For B. Page, not Grable. I’ve given thought to naming my cavalry trapdoor carbine Penelope and have been known to refer to my Anschütz .22 as Helga.
Okay, club members, I am in need of some info. Is anyone familiar enough with the CETME / HK-91 to tell me if the magazines are interchangeable? I have been told that the mags do, indeed, interchange and I have handled a few CETME examples and I must admit that the mags do look to be the same as the HK-91 magazines. I have an opportunity to buy some used CETME mags at a ridiculously low priice, and even though I have a baker’s dozen mags for my HK-91 now…
Dang! I guess that question was TOO mundane! Well, how about this one: can any members tell me who makes the frames for some of the 1911A1 clones? I have been told that the AutoOrdnance (Thompson) frames used to be made by Essex. How about AMT? I have several knock-offs that I use as testing platforms for accessories and I am thinking about making better guns out of them, so the subjects of tolerances and metallurgy would be important in my decisions. Does anyone know of a cross-reference or definitive authority for 1911A1-style pistols?
Nothing mundane about either topic, just that you’ve stumped the band. The only H&K I’ve ever shot belongs to a friend who lets me use it at subgun matches here in Phoenix. My own 1911 is a late model Colt that’s been worked over. I’ve never build up one from scratch.
That link wasn’t working. The Scottsdale club is fairly new and quite expensive so I haven’t shot there. The matches I shoot at are held at the Rio Salado range in Mesa four times a year. FWIW subgun means submachinegun, a pistol caliber machine gun with a rifle buttstock. My friend usually shoots his Uzi and Sten while I shoot his MP5K.
I don’t suppose this new Scottsdale Gun Club is in any way associated with Mandall’s? I shot there about 15 years ago. At the time, Mandall’s had the most extensive line of S&W handguns I have ever seen. The range was downstairs and you could try anything in their inventory of rental guns. I seem to remember a very reasonable rental fee… The one catch was that you had to buy their ammo to shoot in their guns. The ammo was RWS or some such, IIRC. Pretty expensive fodder, but if you’re gonna blast away with a subgun - what the heck. Oh, and no tracer [dang!]. I ended up doing a comparison demo of the three most popular 9mm tools of the time: MAC 11, UZI mini, and HK MP5K. I think I also shot the MP5SD - there were several after-market conversions at the time and there was an interesting tube from one of the final competitors for the gov’t contract that looked promising. Anyway, is this new club a spin-off of Mandall’s?
Can a lurker play? I have a post ban AR-15, MAK-90, HK 91, and believe it or not, a Steyr Aug with four 30 round magazines. Only problem is that the Aug is green.
I think it’s an offshoot of a shop called The Armory. Mandall’s has their indoor range but this is a new outdoor range. I do most of my shooting at Phoenix Rod & Gun and my monthly cowboy shoots up at Ben Avery.
Dang! You folks don’t seem to giving our club here too much support! Since my last two questions seemed to be a little too difficult, I’ll ask something different. Has anyone had the opportunity to shoot one of the new Taurus .45ACP revolvers? They are five shot and are available in 4" and 6" barrels for now, I believe. I have read about them in several magazines and also in my “Gun Tests” publication, but I haven’t seen one in any gun shop or at any gun show. I think they are called “Trackers,” and I seem to recall that they are being built on the same frame as the “Raging Bull” series of revolvers. I am especially curious about how well the “porting” works on these guns. I have been on the lookout for a S&W model 25 for a long time, but I think they have all been grabbed by the Pin Shooting Crowd; and I’m not real interested in a 625. I recently found a model 25 with two cylinders - one .45ACP and one .45 Colt; I didn’t purchase it because I have been told that S&W had some trouble with this conversion when people starting sending it back to the factory for fitting of the second cylinder - one cylinder would shoot good and the other would give terrible accuracy. It was because of the different cylinder gap of the two cylinders, I was told. I really am impressed with the recent re-issue of the old Model 1917, but that piece is more of a collector item, and I have a tendency to shoot all the firearms I own. Can anyone give me their thoughts on the new Taurus? (I hope this revolver is made available in a 2.5 or 3 inch barrel - talk about about a great back-up for your 1911A1)
Sorry, my only wheelguns are six repro Colt cap and ball and a repro Colt single action army. I don’t even know anyone with a double action .45 caliber revolver. Actually mine are .44, what Colt called .45 in cap and ball days. My .45 Colt single action revolver doesn’t see a lot of use and I’ll be converting it to .44-40 anyway since my lever action rifles are in that caliber.
Current project is my repro military carbine as issued in '73. 1873 An H&R replica trapdoor Springfield cavalry carbine.
As far as I know, they’re interchangable, but don’t take my word as authoritative. I just checked out tapco.com (great people, but I’m trying not to look so that I might keep some of my paycheck this week), and their cetme mags are listed as fitting in G3s/HK91s.
Yessir, SenorBeef - that’s the source I was talking about. My latest catalog from Tapco lists the magazines for $4.95 each! At that price, they’d make good paperweights, if nothing else! I bought my HK91 bipod from them a couple of years ago; it cost me $99.00 from Tapco when everywhere else (including H&K), it was $250.00 and up. If there are folks out there who are trying to put a 'scope on their H&K rifles, let me know - I have some tips that I had to learn the hard way.
Tapco are really great people. Fast shipping, cheap, and things are either as advertised or better.
I bought 12 bakelite ak-74 mags off them a while back with pouches for like $5 each - I was expecting beat up old mags but actually got new in wrap east german magazines with fully stocked pouches - cleaning kits, stripper clips, blank firing adapters, etc.
Is anyone here willing to shell out big bucks for the White Feather model of the M1A1? I believe it’s made by Springfield Armory. I saw it on The American Shooter a while back, and I am duly impressed, but dang! $2500.00? That’s kinda outta my league! That’s a great t.v. show, by the way. The stunts that Bob Munden and the guy with the bow do are absolutely fascinating. It is shown up here on the OLN [Outdoor Life Network]. The host discussess new firearms and accessories, and sometimes they have film of shooting events from around the country. Check it out if you can find it in your area.
Since it is nearly Christmas, I have decided to order a new 1911A1-style pistol. I am torn between Springfield Armory and Kimber. What experiences have you had with these two brands, fellow club members? Do you have a preferred model from one of the makers? What are your thoughts about carbon vs. stainless steel? If carbon steel - blued or parkerized? In other makers’ products, do you favor high-capacity (double stack magazines) capable or single stack? Do you prefer traditional single action, SA/DA, or DAO?
All those questions make me wonder if a 1911 is really what you want. Sorry I can’t comment on Springfield or Kimber but love my Colt combat target model. Something else to look at is an EAA Witness. The .45 ACP model is a stretched CZ-75 clone that has the most managable grip of any double stack .45 Ten rounds in the standard magazine. Double action with a frame mounted safety so you can carry condition 1 like a 1911 or hammer down in conventional DA first shot mode. Some have a decocker but not mine. I’ve got a carry comp with the wonder finish. Extremely well made gun. Trigger isn’t as good as a 1911 can potentially be but that’s true of any double action.
