So what is the difference between a clip and a magazine?

A magazine fully encloses the ammunition except the opening at the top where it feeds out, a clip does not. Clips generally hold the ammunition at the rear only. Examples are the en-block clip used in the M1 rifle. It holds eight rounds in two staggered rows. Stripper clips as used in many bolt action rifles hold the cartidges by the rim in a single row.

The stripper clips shown are for 5.56mm ammunition for the M16 which uses a magazine. In this case the stripper clips are not used in the fifle but with a small device to quickly load the ammunition from the stripper clips into the magazines ten rounds at a time. Other stripper clips are used to load directly into the weapon as on Mauser bolt action rifles.

Thanks, I feel educated. I don’t know much at all about firearms, but would definitely like to learn.

The M1 Carbine was great for its intended purpose. I like my M1 Carbines.

The French gun’s name sounds like “show-show”. I don’t know how to spell it, but it’s something like “chaut-cheaux”. It was so badly made that parts wouldn’t interchange. The magazine had holes in it (so you could see how many rounds you had left) that would let mud into the mechanism. I’m sure it killed a lot of soldiers – on the wrong side.

Actually, I screwed up. When I wrote what I wrote, I was thinking about a modified 47 style brake I’ve seen. Actually, what Tripler has on his rifle is an ak-74 style brake, seen here.

The krinkov’s conical flash hider can be seen here..

I didn’t see a technical diagram or cross section photo in my search, but you can always search under ‘ak-74 muzzle brake’ if you really want to see one.

SenorBeef - aha! I see how I got myself all tangled up here… The Krinkov is the AKS-74U! I have gotten into the bad habit of referring to all 7.62X39 variants as the “AK-47” and I have referred to the 5.45X39 as the “Krinkov”.

oh, I forgot to ask - was the modified AK-47 muzzle brake that you are talking about a one-of-a-kind?

I have a stock Leatherman Wave with specially modded ballistic nylon boot sheath with interlocking Delrin buckles and tool accessory side pack . The entire mechanism has been dis-assembled, the surface pellet blasted and a black powder coated finish baked on for minimum reflectivity for black ops missions. Add ons include locking position tool adapter also modified with black, powder coated finish to match main unit. Locking saw unit has been has the diamond coating upgrade applied and carbide coating as been plasma welded to plier jaws for maximum durability. A braided Kevlar lanyard is attached to the eyehole accessory for assured retainability.

High powered assault pliers?

It’s called the “Chauchat”, but I don’t know how it’s pronouced. I friend told me it sounded like “Shit-shit”, but he may have just been referring to the function.

I have heard that the gun has never actually fed an entire magazine without jamming. Don’t know if that’s true or not.

Interestingly enough, in a computer game called “Fallout Tactics”, one could actually find said gun. It was a joke though. The description refered to it as the “worst gun ever created” and you couldn’t actually use it(unlike all the other guns in the game).

I don’t remember the origin of the brake. I just remember a normal 47 slant brake with a … whatever they call the stage with opposite side small holes

That’s right old man! Black ops can be complicated. If there’s a bolt that needs tightening, a key that needs filing, a screw that needs turning, a can that needs opening or a thread that needs trimming just step out of he way!

[Bitter sarcasm]Ted Kennedy has to hear about this. There should be a law against them or something. Pliers with no legitimate sporting purpose. Won’t somebody think of the childredn!!![/BS]

Maeglin, puh-leeze stick around this thread and ask any questions you want. The more people that can be informed and make decisions based on facts and not rhetoric, the better. (plus, you will probably want to check out what the fun is all about!!)

And astro, you’d get my vote for associate member, since ya can’t take that on a plane either!

Oh, BTW, did anyone watch Peter Jennings World News last night? Were you suprised as I was that we apparently belong to a “sinister” subaspect of the always sinister gun culture? That of the wannabe sniper culture. Of which, they are sure, the shooter in MD is a part of? No rant, sorry to hijack, just FYI.

I didn’t see that, but I did see a gunshop owner suggesting that the sniper would use something like a Ruger bolt-action .223 (which he displayed). The gun shop owner also mentioned the Mini-14 would not be an ideal choice for the sniper, as it’s not as accurate as the bolt-action.

He said the .223 was originally made as a varment hunting round, and was adopted by the U.S. military in the M-16. He said the civilian version of the M-16, the AR-15, is available in “all 49 states”. (I guess he doesn’t consider California to be part of the U.S.)

It is?

49 states indeed. I thought New Jersey banned them too.

Dang, I really should check up on old threads much more often.

radar ralf, SenorBeef is right. It’s an “AK style” brake. And as far as how it works, I think I do detect a small amount of recoil reduction. I haven’t tried it with an actual M-16 (damn range rules), but I can actually hold up my '15 like a pistol and fire with less recoil than my 40SW. Of course, I think the mass of the rifle serves as enough of an inertial buffer to help reduce the recoil anyway.

But, I bought “Regina” for two main reasons:
1. It was an impuslive buy. I had just gotten my first paycheck for the summer, and had to buy it. I was going to buy a pistol, but I saw it and instantly fell in love with the AR-15 series.
2. It was a tossup between a full-length 20" barrel, and a shorter 16" carbine. I figured I’d be taking this on long hikes and what not, and it’d be easier to take with. So, I went with the carbine.

And before you ask: Yes, I have a name for each of my firearms.
