SDMB Demographics

Nerds. That’s one reason I stay away form the big “L” types.

And hang out on the Dope, which, as we all know, is a nerd-free zone.

[Judy & Mickey]Damn, we could make a concentration camp right here on this old Message Board! [/Judy & Mickey]

As Sarah Vowell said, “the Internet is the nerd Israel”. SDMB would probably be Tiberias or maybe Caesarea following that example, no Jerusalemn but a nice little oasis and resort.

Intelligence, knowledge and wit are the only characteristics or demographics I give a damn about in choosing folks I enjoy being around. As for the rest I couldn’t care less what religion, race, age or gender the person is (and with many on here I don’t know any of those things) or even what ideological bent so long as they’ve examined and can defend their views. I’ve nothing for or against representative sampling in socializing, it’s a non-issue all around.

None of **us **is a nerd. No siree!!!

Well, I was born in Mexico…does that count? :stuck_out_tongue: In addition, I’m ACCUSED of being a ‘conservative’…quite often. Thats got to count for something as well. Can’t help you on th eother under represented groups personally however…

I think the 'Dope is more exclusive because of the standards the Mod’s set and the users themselves enforce through a combination of humiliation (within the bounds of the rules of course :stuck_out_tongue: ) and a willingness to follow the board culture on things like citing of facts to back up ones position. In addition, I assume MOST of the members came here after getting involved in the Straight Dope articles written by Unca Cecil…I know thats how my dad (the original user/owner of this account) found it, and how I got involved with the board myself. Just the desire to read through articles that explore and debunk common myths or questions puts one in a certain subset of the population…one that is interested in such questions and has an open mind about such things, along with a decent BS detector and healthy skepticism.

JMHO.

I’m 3 out of 4. Since atheists are also over-represented, I might be 4 out of 5.

Geographically speaking, “people who live in the Dominican Rep.” are way over-represented. There are three of us here. Compare for example to: there used to be a poster for Argentina and one from Brazil, none post here anymore. And those two countries are way bigger and have much bigger populations than D.R.

Denmark is over-represented too.

An by the way, all three posting from D.R. are atheists, which is very odd in an overwhelmingly Catholic country.

except for like the education part and stuff, you know? that is so not hollywood

Check, check, check, check. Also a woman.

Czech?

So, you’re a Ph.Dyke in Faygeleh Studies?

(OK, that was overcontrived . . . )

  1. Are generally obese and live in their parents’ basements?

That’s World of Warcraft.

PsyDyke.

If we were, we’d have more Slutty, dissolute women.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the SDMB is skewed towards, for lack of better terms, geeks, nerds and dorks. People who felt more on the outside and picked on during their school years. People who either dread their high school reunions or view them with a sort of hostile apathy. People who feel compelled to start threads asking how to behave in various social situations - dating, going to a bar for the first time, etc.

Of course, it may just be that the entire world is like that and we all just fake it during our day to day so know one knows.

(Nah… Tiberias is too low-rent, and Caesarea is much too ritzy. In New York terms, the former is the Jersey Shore, the latter the Hamptons.

If you want a good Israeli parallel, I’d go with the Carmel ridgeline in Haifa where I grew up. Generally liberal, generally Ashkenazic, not very religious, much more relaxed and much less trendy than Tel Aviv, even if that puts it a bit behind the curve. You have your Technion geeks, your Haifa U liberal-arts majors, your highly cultured, pedantic Yekkim (German Jews). All and all a nice place to live, but if you want excitement you’d best look elsewhere).

Many people assume that, unless otherwise stated, a person on the internet is male.

So unless us ladies start signing every post “I’m a chick”, we’re assumed to be male, leading to an apparent “lack of women” so long as the gender of the speaker is not relevant to the issues being discussed.

Several people have indicated their surprise to my lack of a penis, both on this and other internet forums, even though I do mention it whenever I see it as relevant. One of them took several minutes to recover from the surprise of finding himself in the company of 8 women, 8, in a group of 9 players in a text based game (1998). We referred to that particular group and the conversations on that day as ElSol’s harem for years

Nothing odd about it - it’s our refuge!
Before I came to live here my atheism wasn’t a particularly central part of my identity, because in places I’d lived before, England especially, it was normal, at least in the circles I live in. Here in the DR it’s not something you mention openly, if you want people to give you the time of day, and it gets a little wearing having to tolerate people’s public, often vocal, expressions of piety in the knowledge that your beliefs are considered deviant.
