See I’m not quite sure how the trade veto/approval process should work, quite frankly. I set all my leagues to commissioner approval this year rather than voting for two reasons. One - flexibility and expediency. If a trade is clearly valid and people make it late in a week and want it to be done this week, I like having the option of pushing it through before game time instead of always having to wait 2 days. I still bring every trade up for comment/objection/review so that if people feel strongly against it we can discuss it. And two - because people are loathe to vote against or veto a trade even if they feel that it’s bad or unfair, so then what’s the point?
But then I think - should you vote againt a trade if it’s unfair, if it’s not sketchy in some way? I mean - if both sides feel like it’s an honestly good trade for them, but you view the situation differently and think it’s stacked, should that be veto’d? I generally lean towards yes, if it’s unambiguously stacked. I don’t think this is such a case.
The only case where we’ve really had an issue on the SDMB was the David Carr/Steven Jackson issue, way back when. When Steven Jackson was a top 10 player, but before 4 points/pass TD so that QBs had inflated scores, a new FF player had a QB injury and needed to trade for one. So he traded top-5 RB Steven Jackson for like… the 18th best QB in David Carr. He didn’t really understand the fundamentals involved - since QB scoring was inflated, Jackson and Carr had similar point totals even though they had vastly different values as players. If the draft happened that day, Jackson would’ve gone like 6th overall and Carr would’ve lasted until the 9th round. It was a very stacked trade. I campaigned to get people to vote against it, but no one would. So it made me think - if that trade wouldn’t be veto’d, would any ever be?
I mean, I guess veto is there in public leagues so that when 2 friends get together and decide to trade MJD/Andre Johnson/Drew Brees for Laurence Marone/Devery Henderson/Trent Edwards, you can stop it. In our leagues we’re not going to face actual collusion. So then the question becomes - when do you ever veto a trade?
I don’t know. I never try to rule these leagues even though I’m the commish. I like to come to consensuses and compromises. I just try to organize things and get them going. This is an issue where I don’t know what to do.
Is this trade unambiguously stacked in my favor? Does it bother anyone else like it bothers Jules? I don’t want it to be tainted when I inevitably win this league, so I don’t want to do anything that seems unfair somehow.
