SDMB Fantasy Football big league (league full)

I’m Scissor Me Timbers.

Hmmm…I have the 12th pick in the first round. I’m guessing whoever has the 20th picks twice, then 19, 18, etc?

I’m on dialup, so it will take me a few minutes to load the draft app. Should be in the room in a few minutes.

Ah, cool. Draft is available for loading now, just go to the league page.

Edit: Yes, standard serpentine. The last drafter will draft first in round 2.

There’s an app for that?

App for what?
The draft app got stuck for me about 90% in. I closed it, reloaded, and it instantly fully loaded. So if you have that issue, try reloading it.

I meant to stick around for the draft results chat, but my browser crashed and I couldn’t get back in.

And we have our results. I think the autodrafters wer Cobra Kai, The Gusterrhoids, unrelated siblings, fighting quakers, and kid_a, with phoenix redbirds showing up in mid-draft somewhere.

Even on cable internet, it took me a couple of attempts to get the draft app to load. I"ll be on early for the dynasty league. Work was a bitch today, so no chance to skip out early.

What am I going to do with Crabtree? Free agents are gonna be slim pickings in this league. Guess I’ll wait and see if I get hit with injuries. Even if Crabtree signs, I doubt he’ll be a factor until November or so. Rookie WRs don’t tend to do well in the NFL.

I’m pretty happy with my team, although I will entertain any offers from anyone willing to unload an extra QB. I mean, Brady Quinn, for real? Yahoo Autodraft, why?

I’ll trade for Quinn. Look over my roster and see what you like.

I’ll trade Orton for the best WR offer, I’m We Do HGH.

Ok, I’ll get started on the reviews. Might take a while. I’ll be going one division at a time, and I’ll be ranking each team/postion 1-5 according to their rank within their own division (I’m not going to bother ranking Defenses, which are all sort of bunched together with a few exceptions, and if you think I’m going to waste any electrons talking about Kickers, you’re nuts). If nothing else, it’s nice to be able to throw a new wrinkle into the reviews.

Division 1: Jules JAMmed out of playoffs

Quentin’s JAMmers

QBs: 1. (18) Drew Brees, 7. (138) Joe Flacco
Rule 1 for grading QBs in this league: if you have two actual starters, you have a good QB situation. This happens to be a great QB situation – ironically, with Brees on board, this is one of the few teams that could have gone without a second QB, and maybe they should have. Rank: 1st

RBs: 2. (23) Clinton Portis, 3. (58) Willie Parker, 6. (103) Donald Brown, 9. (178) Tashard Choice, 10. (183) Ladell Betts
Considering the 1st Rounder was spent on Brees and Willie Parker is a disaster waiting to happen, this is surprisingly good. Choice could well figure into the mix in Dallas, and Brown is a steal at the 103rd pick – even if Addai stays healthy he’s a good bet to hit 800/6, and of course Addai could well miss a lot of time. I wanted Betts just as a part-time back, but his being Portis’ handcuff makes him even more valuable here. Rank: 2nd

WRs: 4. (63) Braylon Edwards, 11. (218) Chansi Stuckey, 12. (223) Chaz Schilens, 3. (258) Jordy Nelson, 14. (263) Malcolm Kelly
Uh-huh. You did realize that you have to start three WRs every week, right? Stuckey and Kelley were pretty good values where you picked them, but they have to be actual starters. As far as I know, none of these guys returns kicks, and I’m not even all that wild about the only real WR you have (though objectively he was a fine value in the 4th). Rank: 4th (only because Cobra Kai has only three WRs on his roster. In spirit, your 5th).

TE: 5. (98) Owen Daniels
He’s good, but I think you would have been off taking a Torry Holt here and then, say, Visanthe Shiancoe in the 7th. Rank: 2nd

DEF: 8. (143) San Diego
In a league this deep you do actually need a Defense that isn’t bad, so we can forgive the fact this wasn’t a WR.

Overall Divisional Rank: 2nd. 1st is well within reach, pending a swap of some your QB/RB depth for a real WR or two.
Kid_A

QBs: 4. (66) Matt Schaub, 15. (295) Daunte Culpepper
On the one hand, with a QB as injury-prone as Schaub, you really needed to draft a second starter. On the other hand, Schaub is the ultimate boom or bust QB, and in this league you need to take some risks to win. The Culpepper pick seems ridiculous, though. He probably won’t start a single game, and if he does he’ll be starting for ***Detroit ***-- if you were going to draft a backup QB, why not a backup on a good team? (Oh, an auto-drafter? That explains it.) Rank:3rd.

RB: 2. (26) Pierre Thomas, 3. (55) Derrick Ward, 5. (95) Ahmad Bradshaw, 12. (226) Justin Forsett
Mediocre starters at best, and Bradshaw was a waste: not the backup RB in NY, and I believe he’s returning punts but not kicks (which is where the real yardage is). Not good. Rank: 5th.

WR: 1. (15) Calvin Johnson, 7. (135) Josh Morgan, 8. (146) Kevin Curtis, 11. (215) Bobby Engram, 13. (255) Jabar Gaffney
I guess this is what happens when you autodraft. Megatron and even Morgan aren’t bad values, but the backups are guys who have a *decent *shot at getting to 600 receiving yards and 4 TDs. You need at least a couple of upside/kick return guys. Rank: 3rd.

TE: 6. (106) Chris Cooley, 14. (266) L.J. Smith
No one should have two TEs in this league, and Cooley was a reach in the 6th. Smith will be dropped before Week 2. Rank: 3rd.

DEF: 9. (175) Carolina
Pretty good, actually, and in about the right spot. Maybe even a bit of a steal.

Overall divisional Rank: 5th. Some upside here, actually, but everything has to break right.
No Use For A Name II

QB: 7. (139) Trent Edwards
Kinda screwed yourself here, didn’t you? With such a weak QB1 I think you should’ve taken another QB a pick or two later so at least you could play matchups. (Since most teams won’t be able to do that, the ability to play matchups in this league is actually a big advantage.) Actually Marc Bulger was available *three *picks later, and IMO he would’ve been a better pick in the 7th. Rank: 5th

RB: 2. (22) Ryan Grant, 3. (59) Jonathan Stewart, 11. (219) Jerome Harrison
I think you need another warm body here. Your WRs are deep and reasonably good, but not to the extent that you’d never have need to start a 3rd RB. None of these guys were reaches, at least. Rank: 4th

WR: 1. (19) Andre Johnson, 5. (99) Donnie Avery, 6. (102) Torry Holt, 10. (182) Jeremy Maclin, 8. (142) Percy Harvin, 12. (222) Bryant Johnson
A nifty little corps. I like Holt this year, and Harvin has potential, especially if he’s involved in the return game (is he?). And, of course, Andre Johnson is the best WR in football. I nearly took him with the 14th pick, but I flipped a coin in my head and went with Moss. You already had so much quality here that you really should’ve taken a RB in the 12th instead of Bryant Johnson. Grant’s handcuff was still available. Rank: 1st.

TE: 4. (62) Tony Gonzalez, 14. (262) Chase Coffman
Again, no one should be drafting a second TE in this league, and especially not someone with an elite starter. Puzzling. Rank: 1st.

DEF: 9. (179) Seattle
I like Seattle’s defense this year, but they’re not a big enough upgrade over the defenses you could’ve picked later to justify passing on a RB (Betts, Buckhalter, and Taylor all would have helped you more). And I think there’s a very good chance Seattle would’ve been available one, two, or maybe even three picks later.

Overall Divisional Rank: 4th. You need for DeAngelo Williams to break his leg and Trent Edwards to stay healthy and put up *much *better numbers than we have any reason to believe he able to. If those things happen, you should be in it.
Cobra Kai (Autodraft?)

QB: 2. (38) Tony Romo, 15. (283) Jeff Garcia
Romo’s solid, and probably the best QB left on the board. Garcia is a wasted pick, not that it matters in the 15th Round. Rank: 2nd

RB: 1. (3) Adrian Peterson, 4. (78) Beanie Wells, 6. (118) Fred Jackson, 11. (203) T.J. Duckett, 12. (238) Maurice Morris
What were the odds of Purple Jesus being available with the 3rd pick? 100:1? Crazy. Wells and Jackson both have some upside, but neither are good bets to break 1,000. Ducket and Morris were total wastes. Rank: 3rd

WR: 3. (43) Brandon Marshall, 5. (83) Lee Evans, 7. (123) Deion Branch, 13. (243) Ronald Curry
The top 3 could be worse, I guess, but there’s literally nothing behind them (Ronald Curry is unemployed). Rank: 5th

TE: 9. (163) Anthony Fasano
Don’t like Fasano at all, and he (or a player of his caliber) could have been gotten 100 picks later. Rank: 5th

DEF: 8. (158) Dallas
Pretty good.

Overall Divisional Rank: 3rd. Good luck finding a 4th WR on the waiver wire.
Exploding Pancakes

QB: 6. (104) Matt Cassel
I think this is problematic. If your QB1 is good enough, then it’s likely best not to draft a second QB, as you’d only be able to wait two or *maybe *three rounds from this point to draft your QB2. But I’d be surprised if Cassel is good enough. He’s going from a great offense to one that was lousy even *before *it lost it’s best receiver in the offseason. The AFC East last year played against a string of laughably bad pass defenses (the two horrible Western divisions, and the pass defenses with the AFC East were also really weak), so Cassel’s numbers (along with those of the other QBs in his divison) were artificially juiced. Even with Randy Moss on his team he wasn’t effective throwing deep. He *was *effective throwing short and intermediate, but he won’t have Wes Welker running slants for him this year. His raw totals last year were good but not great, and almost every indicator suggests that you’d be fortunate if they didn’t drop. Rank: 4th

RB: 1. (17) Steve Slaton, 2. (24) Ronnie Brown, 5. (97) Rashard Mendenhall, 7. (137) James Davis, 13. (257) Bernard Scott, 14. (264) Glen Coffee
That’s more like it. One very solid starter, one super-talented question-mark (Brown), and four guys with reasonable to good chances to be starter-caliber at some point in the season. Both Slaton and Coffee are guys I now wish I’d taken myself. (And what’s the deal with Davis? Is he now definitely the #2 RB in Cleveland?) Rank: 1st

WR: 3. (57) Chad Ochocinco, 4. (64) Eddie Royal, 8. (144) Chris Henry, 11. (217), Devery Henderson, 12. (224) Davone Bess
Another really solid group. I went WR-WR in the first two Rounds, and then I saw a ton of WRs that I thought were good values still on the board in Rounds 3 and 4, but of course I couldn’t take them because I had to get some RBs (that’s how a guy winds up with Jamal Goddamn Lewis on his team). In a lot of ways, you had the draft I wanted to have. Anyway, I like **all **of these guys, both in general and as good values where you picked them. I’m especially ticked about Bess, who starts and returns punts and kicks. Rank: 2nd

TE: 10. (184) Brent Celek
Don’t care for Celek – he didn’t break out last year, and he’s not going to this year. But I imagine you feel differently. Rank: 4th

DEF: 9. (177) Green Bay
Again I’m not a fan in this case. To reuse my own advice: you should’ve waited a couple of rounds to pick a defense you’d like almost as much, and instead taken Bulger here. That’d mean not picking one of Bess, Henderson, Scott, or Coffee, but you have enough depth at RB/WR to make that trade-off.

Overall Divisional Rank: 1st. If you wind up winning the league, you’re going to be insufferable. So, hopefully I’m right about Cassel.

I’m going to do the Giants Fans division next. If anyone wants to do one of the other two divisions, that’d be great. I don’t know how many more of these I have in me, and if I wind up doing all four there’s a good chance that the last two might be much less robust than this one.

Man, smack talking happens fast in this league.

Like I said, I’m a rookie, but this is fun!!!

For the record: I didn’t autodraft. McAffee blocked me from Yahoo! for some error and I had to reboot. But I got Big Ben out of it.

I hope I get a good review. If not, I will see you on the field of battle, sirrah! ::SMACK::

I’m not a big fan, but there was too much value to pass up in my previous picks to take a QB earlier. Cassel was probably the best bet amongst the next group of QBs, and my next pick didn’t come for like 30 more picks, so I took him here. I was hoping to be able to land someone crappy at the end of the draft but the situation didn’t arise.

Steve Slaton was a steal here, I had him ranked 9th or 10th IIRC. I wish I was able to draft a bit higher - with some of the nutty picks we had early on, players who normally don’t have shots at studs had a chance. I was hoping Brandon Jacobs fell to me and he went one pick earlier - but I see no reason Steve Slaton won’t be a stud this year.

Ronnie Brown I’m high on - if you look at a history of running backs with ACL injuries, their second year back usually sees a production boost. And he’s a freak - he can put up 40+ point games as much as anyone in the league.

James Davis is a bit of a mystery to me. Jamal Lewis is done. Crennel was a terrible coach who guaranteed Lewis would get 80% of the carries or something, because there was no other explanation for last year. And Jamal looks even worse this preseason.

That said - I really hope Mangini doesn’t play the same stupid vet favoritism that Crennel did. If Jamal gets more than 20% of the carries on the team I’m going to be pissed.

That said - everyone seems to love James Davis. He’s Mangini’s draft pick. He’s had a good preseason, but his average is inflated by a few big runs. I actually find him very unimpressive - he just doesn’t seem all that good at anything. Strikes me as a journeyman jack of all trades type runner who will be a decent #2 or #3 for a few years.

Jerome Harrison is by far the best runner on the team, but he could not get playing time no matter what he did. Crennel hated him. I don’t know - maybe he really is a bad apple and Mangini will hate him too. He missed out on his chance to outshine Davis because he’s had a nagging ankle injury all preseason.

As an observant Browns fan, I hope Harrison is getting most of the carries on the team by midseason. But I honestly have no idea if that will actually happen. I’m thinking Mangini may play favorites on the basis that he drafted Davis.

I’ve heard Bernard Scott has a chance of taking the Cinci job away from Cedric Benson. Given that Benson is a black hole of suck, I think it’s possible so I took him as a lottery ticket.

I wanted to snag another returner/WR type guy, but Devery Henderson with 800ish receiving yards available after pick 200 was a no brainer. I was going to take Braylon over Eddie Royal and Jules likes to screw me, but I think Royal has a higher floor (and lower ceiling) and a bit of an edge in PPR. No reason Chad can’t have a very good year. I’m a little concerned about having 2 starting WRs from the same team though. But if they end up as the #1 and #2 on a prolific offense that’s not so bad.

He had more playing time in the last few games of the season and had an impressive per game production over the last 4 or 6. I’m hoping this year he hits the ground running.

I like Green Bay this year. When we played them in the preseason they seemed to have the 3-4 scheme down better by their first game with it than the Browns have managed in 4 years. They had tons of injuries last year and I expect them to bounce back. I saw a significant dropoff after Green Bay at this point.

How dare you, sir. I am the most gracious of winners. I have lots of practice.

I won’t bother ranking defenses and kickers except for a few notes, I just don’t care. I’m sorry if my comments get less verbose as I go down, this was a lot harder than I expected.

Division 2:

Phoenix Redbirds
QBs: 2. Kurt Warner (40), 10. Jamarcus Russell (200)
Taking Warner and Larry Fitz with your first two picks isn’t a bad risk/reward strategy in a league like this, where you kind of need to differentiate yourself or be left in the middle of the pack. Getting a backup was a great idea, since I don’t think anyone trusts Warner to play 16 games. Rank: 2nd

RBs: 7. Shonn Greene (121), 8. Ricky Williams (160), 11. Edgerrin James (201), 13. Brandon Jackson (241)
Wow. Trying to think of good things to say about this squad. Did you know Edgerrin James needs only 123 more rushing yards to supplant Marcus Allen at #10 on the all time rushing list? That’s…something. Shonn Greene is going to have some problems getting on the field, but Ricky and Edge will get some touches each week probably. Rank 5th

WRs: 1. Larry Fitzgerald (1), 3. Wes Welker (41), 4. Santonio Holmes (80), 5. Michael Crabtree (120)
This MIGHT make up for your weakness at RB but you are awfully thin after your 3 starters. Godspeed finding WRs on the wire! Crabtree might get traded but I see him as a low impact player this season if he even suits up. This starting group is #1, but Curry Porkrinds’ depth is better. Rank: 1st or 2nd

TEs: 5. Kellen Winslow (81), 12. Tony Scheffler (240)
I see both of these guys in your starting lineup, at least in week 1. I don’t know about carrying two TEs but it works for your team and I like both these guys this year. I expect their QBs to be checking down a ton. Rank: 1st

Overall rank: 3rd. This team and the Baiters are really close. You are much better at WR but lack RBs while QB and TE are close. If Warner stays healthy, I suspect this team will be the better one.

Master Baiters
QBs: 3. Jay Cutler (42), 9. Shaun Hill (162)
Not bad here but I would have taken McNabb over Cutler. Just a gut feeling. Good work getting a semi-starter as a backup too. Rank: 3rd or 4th

RBs: 1. Michael Turner (2), 2. Thomas Jones (39), 10. Laurence Maroney (199), 12. Dominic Rhodes (239), 14. Patrick Cobbs (279)
Solid group right here with 2 starters and 1 sorta starter. Love Maroney in the 10th just because of possible upside that late. He had over 700 yards/6 TDs each of the two years before last, but has trouble staying healthy. You probably wish you could take the Rhodes pick back, but such is life. Rank: 2nd

WRs: 4. Kevin Walter (79), 5. Laveranues Coles (82), 8. Johnnie Lee Higgins (159). 13. Josh Reed (242), 15. Andre’ Davis (282)
Not horrible as a group but nothing too great here. I like that people thought to take KR guys like Johnnie Lee Higgins, but he would have been available much later probably. Rank: 4th

TEs: 7. Zach Miller
Solid TE here, not much to say. Rank: 2nd

Overall rank: 4th. This team and the Redbirds are really close. You have a major advantage at RB, but he is much better at WR. QB and TE are close.

Scissor Me Timbers
QBs: 10. Marc Bulger (197), 11. Matthew Stafford (204)
Well, at least you got two “starters!” I can’t believe the Lions are starting Stafford in week 1 after everything we heard all summer about how he’s not ready. This squad could be one that gets better as the season goes on, but right now its not pretty. Rank: 5th

RBs: 1. Maurice Jones-Drew (4). 3. Joseph Addai (44), 4. Leon Washington (77), 8. Carnell Williams (157), 12. Mike Bell (237), 13. Chris Brown (244)
Two starters and a sorta starter for the best RB squad in this division, mostly because I’m such a believer in Mojo having a huge year. I would have picked Donald Brown over Leon Washington personally as some Addai insurance, but Washington obviously has KR potential. Rank: 1st

WRs: 2. Dwayne Bowe (37), 5. Lance Moore (84), 7. Chris Chambers (124), 14. Rashied Davis (277)
Solid group here but nothing too special. I’m not a believer in Chris Chambers at all, but if he’s healthy and I think the Chargers are putting up a shitload of points this year. He might get more than I think thrown his way. Rank: 3rd

TEs: 9. Bo Scaife (164)
I’m not really sure if Bo Scaife is in the top 25 TEs this year let alone top 20. Rank: 5th

Overall rank: 1st. You have the best RB group and a good WR group. QB is ugly but at least you have two starters.

Curry Porkrinds
QBs: 1. Tom Brady (11), 6. Matt Hasselbeck (110), 15. Tarvaris Jackson (291)
Best QB group in this division by far. You have the best QB and a backup most teams would be happy to call a starter. I would skipped Jackson though, you could have used another WR flier. Rank: 1st

RBs: 2. Kevin Smith (30), 7. Peyton Hillis (131), 9. Jamaal Charles (171), 14. Leonard Weaver (270)
The good news is that you don’t have the worst RB group in this division. The bad news is you only have one starter, and its a Detroit Lion! I actually think Smith is in for a better year than his surprisingly good rookie campaign, and you might be able to cobble some production out of Hillis (playing FB this year) and Charles (KC’s 3rd down back.) Rank: 4th

WRs: 3. T.J. Houshmandzadeh (51), 4. DeSean Jackson (70), 8. Earl Bennett (150), 11. Bobby Wade (211), 12. Malcom Floyd (230)
Nice depth in this group. I think Housh is in for a big season that we’ll all slap our foreheads for not predicting. LOVE DeSean Jackson especially in this format. Bennett has upside, but Wade and Floyd will probably struggle a little to get on the field. Rank: 1st or 2nd

TEs: 5. John Carlson (91)
I like Carlson fine this year. Rank: 3rd

Overall rank: 2nd. While you are really weak at RB, I expect big seasons from a lot of guys on your team. I wonder if Hasselbeck is on your team at the end of the season or if you’ll end up trading him.

Fightin’ Quakers
QBs: 2. Phillip Rivers (28)
While I think Rivers is a top 5 QB this year, no backup hurts. You took two kickers one of which really should have been spent getting a second QB. Rank: 3rd or 4th

RBs: 1. Steven Jackson (13), 3. Darren Sproles (53), 5. Felix Jones (93), 14. LaMont Jordan (268), 15. Xavier Omon (293)
This group is weak now, but could be quite good with injuries to either LT or Barber. I would have liked Sproles/Jones in the flex with their KR points, but as a second RB this group is fairly average to below average. Rank: 3rd

WRs: 4. Anthony Gonzalez (68), 6. Domenik Hixon (108), 7. Nate Burleson (133), 9. Pierre Garcon (173)
Not bad with some upside but not great compared to the established receivers on some other teams in this division. Garcon adds some KR points but he will struggle to get touches aside from that. Rank 4th

TEs: 11. Vernon Davis (213)
I can’t stand Vernon Davis but he’s only slightly below average for this league. Rank: 4th

Overall rank: 5th. This team has some major flaws that I’m not sure are fixable. If LT or Barber get hurt though that could be enough to swing you into the top 2.

Division 4: Too Many Giants Fans

Court Jesters

QB: 10. (185) Pat White, 14. (265) Tyler Thigpen
Dude, what happened? You don’t have a starting Quarterback. This is not good. You drafted a Kicker in the 9th Round (and another in the 13th, by the way), but no QB with a starting job. When you drafted White, there were still at least two starters available (Bulger, Russell). I’d say this was some sort of autodraft snafu, but the autodrafter would never take a kicker before a QB . . . would it? Rank: 23rd out of 5

RB: 1. (16) Brandon Jacobs, 2. (25) Marion Barber, 5. (96) Cedric Benson,
Very nice trio, though a warm body to round out the group would have been nice. Perhaps a RB instead of that second Kicker? Rank: 1st.

WR: 4. (65) Antonio Bryant, 7. (136) Michael Jenkins, 8. (145) Mark Clayton, 11. (216) Mark Bradley, 12. (225) Brian Robiskie
You’re going to have problems in the passing game this year. Bryant and Jenkins have starting jobs, which is about the nicest thing you can say about the group. I mean, Jenkins is maybe the 4th option on his offense, and Bryant missed the entire preseason with a knee injury. The others are uninspiring. Rank: Rank: 5th.

TE: 3. (56) Antonio Gates, 15. (296) Billy Miller
Gates is fantastic, I like him as the top TE this year. Since you have a TE you’re going to start every week, therefore, Miller would be wasted pick even if he wasn’t out for the year. Rank: 1st.

DEF: 6. (105) New York (Giants)
Too early for a defense, though I like the one you picked (shocking that they were drafted into our division). They’ve got a ridiculously deep front seven and should generate a lot of pressure, which means lots of sacks and turnovers.

Overall Divisional Rank: 5th The worst WR corps in the divisions, and literally no QB. Good RBs can’t overcome that.

Team Ed Gruberman

QB: 2. (31) Aaron Rodgers, 11. (210) Mark Sanchez
Rodgers is awfully good, but this does seem a tad early to me. OTOH, he wouldn’t have been there for your next pick, so if you really wanted him it was your only shot. I still would’ve gone with a McFadden myself. As for Sanchez, it seems like the only people who are drafting two QBs so far are the ones with a QB1 that they intend to start every week. Weird. I don’t think you needed him, but starting QBs of any stripe are a rare commodity in this league, so he may come in handy as trade bait if not as a player. Rank: 2nd.

RB: 1. (10) Frank Gore, 6. (111) Sammy Morris, 10. (191) Fred Taylor, 14. (271) Greg Jones
Interesting idea here: buy two tickets to the Patriots RB Committee Lottery and hope that one of them pays off. If it does you’ll have a team to be reckoned with, though I think you might need to get a little more out of your 4th RB than I figure Greg Jones will give you. Rank: 2nd.

WR: 4. (71) Santana Moss, 5. (90) Jerricho Cotchery, 8. (151) Steve Smith [NYG], 12. (231) James Jones, 15. (290) David Clowney
Solid, low-upside/low-risk starting trio. None are breaking out for 1300/12, but the first two can be counted on to finish with roughly 1000/8, maybe a little better, and Smith will catch a goodly number of balls at .5 points per. For a 15th Rounder, Clowney is good guy to take a flyer on (though you have a lot of damn Jets on your roster). Rank: 4th.

TE: 3. (50) Jason Witten, 13. (250) Jermichael Finley
Love your TE1, hate the idea of taking a TE2. TE is not like QB: when Witten’s bye comes up (or if he’s injured) there will be a starting TE on waivers, and aside from that you will never want to start anyone but Witten. Rank: 2nd. (Most would say 1st, but I like Gates better.)

DEF: 7. (130) Minnesota
Good choice. I’d say it’s too early, but there really wasn’t anything else available in the 7th that would help you as much as a top-tier Defense.

Overall Divisional Rank: 1st. You get credit here for a good RB situation, but it could very easily go to pot.

Varlos’ Zzzzzzz
QB: 4. (67) Carson Palmer, 7. (134) Jason Campbell
Palmer was a panic pick. My next selection was 23 picks away. There were WRs I liked still available, but used my first two picks on that position, and felt I needed to grab other stuff. He’s a lottery ticket. I’m glad I nabbed Campbell. I like him for an average season, which in this league will be plenty good enough to use him as trade bait or to play matchups if Palmer is just so-so.** Rank: 3rd.**

RB: 3. (54) Jamal Lewis, 5. (94) Julius Jones, 6. (107) Jerious Norwood, 10. (187) Correll Buckhalter
Speaking of panic picks, I present to you Mr. Jamal Lewis. I don’t like that I felt I had to take a RB no matter what, and I don’t like the choice I made. Parker or Stewart would be better (actually, the best pick would have been Leon Washington). After Lewis I rather like my RBs, though. Jones is a (nominal) starter on a team that will win it’s fair share of games, and Norwood gets some snaps in the offense, returns kicks, and backs up a player with a good chance to get injured this year. Buckhalter was an accidental pick, but not a bad one. I have no idea what kind of usage he’ll get. Rank: 4th.

WR: 1. (14) Randy Moss, 2. (27) Reggie Wayne, 9. (174) Joshua Cribbs, 11. (214) Patrick Crayton, 12. (227) Mario Manningham, 13. (254) Kenny Britt
Now that’s more like it. Moss and Wayne are excellent, of course (Wayne should thrive with the PPR). Cribbs won’t break out and have a huge year for me, but his return yards will mean a very predictable 4-8 points every week, someone I can plug in due to byes etc. Manningham was a reach; he just looked good in preseason, and Eli seemed to find him. Probably could have had him two Round later, though. Rank: 1st.

TE: 14. (267) Randy McMichael
Good value. St. Louis will be a little better this year, and they don’t have many people who can catch the ball. Rank: 3rd.

DEF: 8. (147) New England
I’m ambivalent. Didn’t want to get stuck with a Defense I hated, and all the good ones were flying of the board.

Overall Divisional Rank:2nd. In a fit of nepotism I’m giving myself 2nd, but in reality I think the top for teams are very close. I didn’t expect to have a shot after the draft but, but all the teams in this division have problems at least as big as mine (except maybe Gruberman).

Frosted_Lightning

QB: 1. (20) Peyton Manning, 7. (140) Jake Delhomme
Another player drafting a good backup who will only see the field on QB1’s bye week. Can’t say that I get it. Manning is the safest bet in fantasy football. I’d have gone with a RB, I think, but it’s at least close. Rank: 1st.

RB: 3. (60) LenDale White, 5. (100) Willis McGahee, 6. (101) LeSean McCoy, 8. (141) Tim Hightower, 11. (220) Mewelde Moore
This is why I would’ve gone RB in Round 1. A couple of guys who might theoretically be TD vultures but little else, RBBC member on an ordinary offense, a rookie backup, and Mewelde Moore, who I honestly thought was out of the league. Granted, this is a glass-half-empty description. McCoy is backing up a very fragile RB and stands to get a lot of action when the inevitable happens. Moore might be doing Kick Returns, etc. Still, I peronally don’t like any of these guys. Rank: 5th. (It’s close, though.)

WR: 2. (21) Steve Smith [CAR], 4. (61) Vincent Jackson, 10. (181) Sidney Rice, 13. (260) Mike Sims-Walker, 15. (300) Dennis Northcutt
Better starters than most, but no depth at all, which sucks because you have to start at least three of these guys every week (and it’s not like your RB corps is so good that you can count on it to put your RB/WR flex to good use every week). Rank: 3rd.

TE: 9. (180) Kevin Boss
Homer pick? He won’t be bad, but I doubt he’ll justify his draft position. WR depth would have been better here. Rank: 5th.

DEF: 12. (221) Houston
 Houston’s defense was *terrible *last year, and it’s not like it was a fluke: they’ve been terrible since forever. Sure, they could turn it around and get to league average this year, that’s totally possible. But even if they do, all you’re left with is a below-average fantasy defense. They would have gone undrafted.

Overall Divisional Rank: 3rd. If you can salvage a decent RB situation you’ll win the division. I just don’t think that’s very likely.

The Gusterrhoids

QB: 10. (193) Brady Quinn
I’d be surprised if Quinn is not named the starter, sure, but it’s pretty damn ballsy to draft one Quarterback who might start and no one else. It’s improvident, I tell you. That said, assuming he is the starter, I think he’s a steal in the 10th. Rank: 4th

RB: 1. (8) LaDainian Tomlinson, 4. (73) Larry Johnson, 12. (233) Andre Brown (I.R.)
Potentially very good top 2. And then air. This is a problem. Rank: 3rd (??? How the hell do you rank this? His two RBs are better than anything me or Frosted_Lightning have, but that there are only two of them is going to cause him big problems down the line.)

WR: 2. (33) Roddy White, 3. (48) Terrell Owens, 5. (88) Donald Driver, 6. (113) Muhsin Muhammad, 11. (208) Miles Austin, 14. (273) Keenan Burton
Despite the fact that I think Owens is being overdrafted this year, this is a pretty good group. I wanted Miles Austin myself. Rank: 2nd.

TE: 8. (153) Heath Miller, 13. (248) Brandon Pettigrew
Miller’s fine, but I wasn’t aware the we had a Blocking TE slot in this league. Rank: 4th

DEF: 7. (128) Philadelphia
They should be good. Anti-homer pick, though, and too early given that you could’ve used a third RB.

Overall Divisional Rank: 4th. You drafted two Kickers, a player on Injured Reserve, and a lone Quarterback who might not be the starter. That said, if you can pick up another RB somehow and catch a couple of breaks, you’d have a shot at the division.

I’m going to bed. Anyone who feels up to doing Division 3 should do so. Believe me, you wouldn’t be stepping on my toes.

Living in Bills country, all I’ve been hearing all preseason is how the Bills plan to get the ball to TO as often as they can. I’m not sure it’ll work, but if it does, he will put absolutely huge numbers.

After having some time to review, I think I can say that I won the draft.

  1. (17) Steve Slaton
  2. (24) Ronnie Brown
  3. (57) Chad Ochocinco
  4. (64) Eddie Royal
  5. (97) Rashard Mendenhall
  6. (104) Matt Cassel
  7. (137) James Davis
  8. (144) Chris Henry
  9. (177) Green Bay
  10. (184) Brent Celek
  11. (217) Devery Henderson
  12. (224) Davone Bess
  13. (257) Bernard Scott
  14. (264) Glen Coffee
  15. (297) Shayne Graham

Most complete roster around, with lots of upside still. Only big question mark is QB.

First impression is that division 3 may actually be the toughest division by a small margin, but I haven’t compared them in depth too much.

Believe me, i agonized about taking Cutler. He’s the new QB, under a lot of pressure in a big market, and has to learn a new system. He also doesn’t have the strongest receiving corps around. It’s not going to be easy for him. I’ve also always like Donovan McNabb. But this is only my third season of FF, and it’s my first really deep league, so i’m using it as a bit of an experiment. That’s not to say that i’m not taking it seriously; only that i’m trying a few things that i might not have tried before.

Anyway, i figured that Cutler is always going to throw for a lot of yards, and in a league where every 20 yards gets a point, that’s a pretty big deal (my other leagues have all always been 40yds/point). He might get intercepted a bit, but his yardage should compensate for that, over someone like McNabb. And if the Bears come together and give him some protection, he could have a really good year.

Fingers crossed.

Yeah, i was under the impression that Rhodes was going to get carries in Buffalo, especially over the first few weeks of the season, and then they just dropped him. My fault for not checking before i selected him. I’m not going to get rid of him just yet, because there’s very little to choose from in the FA market, and i’m hoping someone picks him up.

I have high hopes for Maroney. If he can stay on the field, he could really help this team out.

Yeah, probably should have left Higgins for later.

I think Walter could be pretty good. He had a good fantasy year last year, and with all the attention that defenses pay to Johnson down in Houston, he gets some good opportunities. I’ll be interested to see how Coles goes in Cincinnati.

Thanks for the comments.
