SDMB Fantasy Football big league (league full)

Hmm, I just assumed you were, I guess. My mistake.

And D_Odds is apparently in.

Toying with the divisions a bit.

Division 4: Too many Giants fans
Court Jesters
Ed Gruberman
Varlos’ Zzzzzz
Frosted_Lightning
The Gusterrhoids

Division 1: Jules JAMmed out of playoffs
Exploding Pancakes
Cobra Kai
No Use For A Name II
Kid_A
Quentin’s JAMmers

This division is the non-giants fans group of people who’ve played together in the all pro and/or auction leagues. The goal here is to keep Jules Andre out of the playoffs so he can weep for days about it and then declare it no big deal.
Which leaves 2 uncategorized divisions with Curry Porkrinds, Phoenix Redbirds, Scisscor me timbers (who’s that, btw?), Master Baiters, Fightin’ Quakers, We Do HGH, Antonican Druids, Donte’s Torino, Unrelated Siblings, Stinkers. Any suggestions?

If you want to be put together with a friend or person you’ve played FF with before, feel free to ask. Or any other suggestion that gives some logic to the divisions. A summary of what we know about the players is in post 84.

The draft is coming up next Tuesday. Again I reiterate that I highly recommend you attend it - both because it’s half the fun of a fantasy football league, and because the autodrafter can’t do as good a job as you do, even if you pre-rank (although that helps).

The only scoring change I made from yahoo default was giving 1 point per 25 return yards. I’d still like to change the scoring to more closely match the All-pro league’s scoring. No one has really commented on the idea.

Anyway, if you can’t attend the draft (sorry for being a broken record) at least pre-rank your players. Go into the league page and click “Rank your players” under league notes. This way you can at least personalize your team to an extent.

I don’t think there’d be any significant objection to some scoring changes. You could just say that, barring objection, you’d prefer to increase the bonus/penalty for points allowed by a DEF, increase pass TDs to 6, increase INTs and fumbles lost to -3, etc. All pretty minor, non-controversial changes. Maybe a little undemocratic, but in the absence of any voiced opposition I think it’s ok for the commish to make small changes like this by fiat.

The only things in the All-Pro scoring I’m not wild about, personally, are (A) the yardage plateaus, and (B) the points given to Defenses for kick/punt return TDs – normally I wouldn’t mind the latter so much, but with so many kick returners bound to be in the starting lineup every week already, there’s no need to double up on their TDs. I suppose it’s also debatable whether you need to make passing yards 20 yards/point if you’re making passing TDs worth 6, but I’ve usually used 20/per in my leagues, and never had a problem.

Missed the edit:

Oh, also negative points for taking a sack – I’m a big proponent. My preference is actually to deduct a full point, but I think most people would be fine with a -.33 deduction. If you’re doing 20/per and 6 for TDs, a 1/3 or 1/2 point sack penalty also helps to rein in QB scoring a bit.

The all-pro league doesn’t have 6 per TD, it has 4 TD/-2 int. Maybe you meant it as a seperate suggestion, but it was listed with other all-pro scoring criteria.

We decided to do the QB punishments first (sack penalty, -2 ints, etc) and to compensate that to not drop QB production too far, we attacked it from the yardage end (20 yards per point) rather than the TD end. I like this better as in general I’d rather see yardage have more power relative to TDs in fantasy leagues.

I’m not too attached to the yardage bonuses, although I do like them - I tried to set them at the points where you’d classify a player has having a good and great day. But I can remove them, no big deal.

Scoring changes from the all pro league that have been suggested to be changed here:

Reduce kicker scoring from 3-3-4-5-6 to 3-3-3-4-5. Also reduce the missed kick penalty or just leave it? I’m fine with leaving it.

Don’t give DST 6 points for return TDs. I’m okay with that, especially as you said since a lot of the players who are actually scoring those return TDs will be starting in this league.

Reduce bonus points for weekly yardage numbers exceeding certain thresholds.

Factoring in those changes, our scoring system would look like this:

Passing yards: 20 per point
Passing TD: 4
Int: -2
Sacks taken*: -0.4
Rushing yards: 10 per point
Rushing TD: 6
Receptions*: 0.5
Reception yards: 10 per point
Reception TDs: 6
Return Yards: 25 per point
Return TDs (individual): 6
2 point conversions: 2
Fumbles: -1
Fumbles lost: -1

Field Goals 0-19 Yards 3
Field Goals 20-29 Yards 3
Field Goals 30-39 Yards 4
Field Goals 40-49 Yards 5
Field Goals 50+ Yards 6
Field Goals Missed 0-19 Yards -3
Field Goals Missed 20-29 Yards -2
Field Goals Missed 30-39 Yards -1
Point After Attempt Made 1
Point After Attempt Missed -3

Defense:

Sack: 1
Int: 2
Fumble Recovery: 2
Touchdown: 6
Safety*: 4
Block kick: 2
Points Allowed* 0 points 16
Points Allowed 1-6 points 11
Points Allowed 7-13 points 7
Points Allowed 14-20 points 3
Points Allowed 21-27 points -1
Points Allowed 28-34 points -6
Points Allowed 35+ points -11

The scores with asterisks are things that have changed in the all-pro league scoring since I first proposed it on this thread. Specifically, we changed receptions from .35 points to .5, sack penalty from -.33 to -.4, made safeties worth 4, and tweaked the defensive scoring by points allowed slightly.

Are there objections to the scoring proposed in this post? The half a point per reception is probably the biggest change. A full PPR changes a league substantially, half a PPR not quite so much - it lets WRs make up a little ground on RBs value wise and rewards multirole RBs.

I’ve never liked the double bonuses. I figure, if you want the plateaus, one is fine. I guess I’m okay with the idea, but everytime I think about it, two things come to my head that make me against the yardage bonuses in general.

1.) They’re basically impossible to predict. Okay, we know that Adrian Peterson is more likely than Jamal Lewis to get 175 yards rushing at this point, but aside from that, there’s no way to account for them. When I do my projections and prerankings, I don’t even factor in the bonuses at all.

And 2.) They are a little redundant to begin with. I guess they’re supposed to provide a little bonus to owners who started a guy who had a really big week… but isn’t the big week bonus enough? 200 yards and a TD from your top back isn’t enough of an advantage?

It’s one of those things that I like having in the scoring because it makes it interesting, but I try not to think about it because when I do, I can’t justify them being there at all.

I’m not nearly as experienced as some of folks playing, so I hereby defer to whatever you think is best.

Since this draft is going to run very deep, I suggest everyone make a list of players they’d be interested in towards the end. You could even put them in your pre-draft rankings (during the draft you can switch between whether yahoo displays their default rankings list or your custom rankings list) that way you have them at your finger tips. If everyone is looking through the list every pick at the end, the draft could get slow and take a long while. Best to have some idea of who you want later.

We have 2 divisions remaining that are just random. Does anyone have any idea whatsoever how to organize/name the following people?

Curry Porkrinds
Phoenix Redbirds
Scissor Me Timbers
Master Baiters
Fightin’ Quakers
We Do HGH
Antonican Druids
Unrelated Siblings
Stinkers

A summary of what we know about everyone is here:

About 24 hours to the draft. Please attend it - autodrafts are boring, suck, and it’s more fun for everyone the more people are there to talk during the draft.

I’m going to go ahead and implement the scoring found in post 126. It took into account all suggestions that were made, and no one objected anything that remains. The biggest change is the .5 points per reception, which boosts the value of WRs and multirole RBs. Second biggest change is that return yards count at 25 yards per point, so players who might get 100 return yards and 50 rec/receiving yards per game like third down backs or fourth receivers become more viable starters, and points allowed matters much more to our defenses than standard.

Love the 0.5 PPR setting, looking forward to the draft!

I’m not sure Yahoo updated their projections/player lists to account for all the players that were cut a few days ago. You may want to google people you’re interested in to double check - we’re going to be drafting 300 players so the last few rounds are going to have some pretty obscure players.

I should get home from class by 10:30. If I do, I’ll be sure and make the last half of the draft.

I’ll be there for the draft. Looking forward to it, although i’m still trying to work out who my first pick (2nd overall) is going to be.

I’m also trying to work out when and how to slot in my Defense pick. The league i’ve been playing in for the last couple of seasons does not pick whole-team defenses. Instead, you play three individual defenders (from any team) each week, so you have to focus on individual performance rather than the team.

Draft is in 4.5 hours. I know who everyone is except Scisscor Me Timbers - who is that?

Actually, I don’t know who “We do HGH” is either.

This was our original randomized draft order.

Since then, we lost Southern Yankees and Bear Down and we gained Scisscor Me Timbers and We Do HGH. I don’t know what order those teams left or joined in, so I just gave Southern Yankee’s draft spot to Scisscor me timbers and Bear Down’s spot to We do HGH.

You can load up the draft app a half hour before the draft starts (about a half hour from now) and chat with everyone before it starts.

We Do HGH is Stringer.

Oh, good. Then the draft order remains correct.
