Resisted the urge to reach for Pickett, and I don’t love Spiller or the Whites. I really don’t need WRs, but figured I might try out the whole BPA thing for once. I’ve got a deadlock between Olave and Moore on my board, so tie goes to Mahomes.
1.09 Ellis - Skyy Moore, WR, KC
I just know in my solipsistic heart that if I took Pickett here he would end up being Mayfield 2.0 for me, no question.
@Really_Not_All_That_Bright is on the clock, and he said upthread he would PM his list of options to @SenorBeef in case he went on the clock early morning, which this is. (4am!)
@Really_Not_All_That_Bright gave me a pre-rank list and said he probably wouldn’t be available till evening, so I’m going to go ahead and pick from it. His top choice is there so I assume he’d be happy making this pick.
Oh shit, I didn’t realize that’s who that was. Do you think RNATB knew? The news came out 3 days ago on the 28th, and RNATB sent me his list 15 hours ago, so there was time for him to know, but I would have to imagine he wouldn’t have ranked him so highly if he knew. He said he was on vacation so it’s entirely possible he missed the news. If I had realized the guy on the top of his list was the one who was shot, I would’ve probably waited on clarification from him, but since I didn’t I just went ahead and made the pick at the top of the list.
RNATB did the right thing by sending a pre-rank list since he’s unavailable a lot now and I don’t want to end up having him get screwed by that.
He’s apparently doing quite well and they expect to have him back this season so it’s not like his career is over, so maybe RNATB decided to draft him anyway, but given the totality of the circumstances I don’t like this situation. I’m not sure what to do here. I guess we can wait for RNATB to return for clarification; maybe give him a chance to re-pick if he didn’t know about the injury. His next pick (the only other available player on his pre-rank list) was Olave, but I wouldn’t want to undo Hamlet’s pick too.
I’d be willing to wait to give RNATB a chance to confirm if he did want to draft him anyway and everything is fine, or if we should give him another crack at #1.10 (while allowing Hamlet to keep Olave since he drafted him in good faith). Opinions on what we should do here?
I think it’d be fair to give RNATB time to undo it. Especially since you’re on the clock right now and you could just let the draft sit until tonight.
Hamlet should probably be allowed to keep Olave as it’s impossible to Google Brian Robinson without getting dozens of stories about the shooting. So RNATB probably knows. But yeah, let’s let him confirm it.
RNATB said he was on vacation, so that’s why I think he may not have known. I’m going to give RNATB some time to come check in on the thread, I sent him a PM.
I should note that this obviously works to my detriment - if we do allow a switch, it is very likely that RNATB is going to take one of the guys I want. But making sure everyone is happy with how things go down and trying to make things work best for everyone is very important to me.
Did you send him a PM? I know he said he’s online evenings, but hopefully he can see emails and at least confirm his knowledge of the shooting while on the go.
It’s great that you are so concerned with avoiding even the appearance of impropriety. I’m glad you’re our Commish.
That said, I kinda think this is a no brainer. The reports are that Robinson’s injuries were not that severe (I wouldn’t have made those jokes if they were), and he should be able to be back to work soon. While it certainly delays the timetable when he replaces Gibson, I don’t think this is one of those career ending things.
More importantly (and not to be “that guy”), it’s the responsibility of every owner to know what is going on. If you draft someone, it’s your job to know their status and health situation. Allowing a redo on a pick because you didn’t google the guy before picking is, to me, not a viable solution, and sets a bad precedent.
It is pretty amazing that they expect him back “sooner than later” according to that article, apparently with the level of NFL athleticism, medical, and support staffs, getting shot a few times is no big deal.
And I understand your point about people being responsible for finding out that sort of information on their own. The reason I’m inclined to give RNATB a break here is that he tried to do the right thing by the league by sending in a pre-rank list to speed up the draft. He could’ve made us wait until he was available in the evening, and maybe caught the problem then, but he didn’t want to slow us down. I don’t want him trying to do the right thing to ultimately screw him over.
Does there seem to be more of these player assaults lately or is just recency bias? Not that there is a story every week, but i feel like there is at least once or twice a year a player is seriously assaulted.
Sorry, I had no idea he got shot. I’ve been on vacation since Saturday and haven’t watched any TV, news, etc. I just logged on to my work computer long enough to scratch off the guys who got drafted from the list I made. It turns out I did see the news on the ESPN scroll in Times Square the other day, but it just said “NFL RB shot in robbery” and didn’t identify him.
Olave was the next guy up on the list I sent Beef, and if I had known about the shooting I would have him first on the list instead. I’m happy for the league to decide by vote whether to reverse the pick or not and I won’t be particularly upset if the majority says no.
So for the sake of transparency, here is the list RNATB sent me:
Brian Robinson, RB, Was
Chris Olave, WR, NO
Treylon Burks, WR, Ten
James Cook, RB, Buf.
Which confirms that he would’ve taken Olave had he known about Robinson. However, I do not feel great about reversing Hamlet’s pick which was made in good faith unless Hamlet is good with that. I mean, I guess it makes logical sense to do that - to basically do a rollback of the draft up to RNATB’s pick - but I don’t want Hamlet to be bitter about this either.
So as I see it, we have 3 options:
Keep it as is, RNATB gets Robinson
Give RNATB a re-pick, but let Hamlet keep Olave since he already made that pick
Reverse the pick entirely, RNATB takes whoever he wants at 1.09, probably Olave.
I’m inclined to say 2 unless Hamlet says he’s okay with 3. But I’d like to hear input from everyone.
