SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY League: Year 14

I’m a bit confused on the FAAB item. What would $2 more than the last please team mean? Is there a old league rule which I’ve forgotten about that dictates we start with different FAABs after the draft?

Apologies is this is already answered in the thread…only got through the OP so far.

Quick vote out of the way.

Superflex - in the strongest possible terms - I am against this. NO on Superflex. I would probably join a new league with a superflex setup but I do not want that option in a Dynasty league. It’s frankly a horrible idea.

For several years now (before I started, at least), we have added $2 per place to the FAAB of each team starting with 2nd place. So 2nd place gets $102, 3rd gets $104, etc.

My vote is NO. While I’m sympathetic to the problem here, this isn’t a workable solution. But I would suggest that people take a breath when you get a trade offer and at least send a couple token PMs to other owners to see if what you’re offering might get you more. You’ll be doing yourself a favor…

Understood…I would claim that you’ve knocked old memories loose…but no, somehow I completely blocked that fact out.

On that point I’m open to following consensus here. We can keep the same method and boost the Consolation Bowl winner’s budget by some amount or we can reset to a flat $100 per team with the prize being a $110. I don’t think FAAB money actually matters that much. People with more money simply overbid for the first couple ambulance chasers and by the end of the season everyone is down to the same $5-10 going into the stretch run. I can’t think of a single example where one of the bottom feeders used that extra FAAB money to notable effect.

Some quick math: based on your description the 1st place winner would have $100 FAAB, the 12th place winner would have $122 FAAB. If we go with the “$2 more than the last place team” rule that would mean the Consolation Bowl winner’s profits will vary based on final seeding. The 5th place team winning the bowl would get an extra $16, the 8th place team winning would only get an extra $10. That feels wrong to me.

If we want to try to drive a little parity using FAAB we could do something tiered like this:
1st-4th: $100 FAAB
5th-8th: $110 FAAB
9th-12th: $120 FAAB
Consolation Bowl Winner: $120 FAAB

You could adjust the amounts up or down to tune the advantage/incentives if you want.

Edit: I will add that I am worried we’ve diminished the value of consolation bowl winner. Since the season ends kind of early and draft order is somewhat more important in Dynasty and without a snake draft, this change is a bit of a disappointment.

I voted with you, so this isn’t me trying to debate this issue, but I want to call out what I think is a bit of blind spot you have here. Let’s ask ourselves why people aren’t investing the effort to work the phones to find trades. You seem to be implying that they are just lazy and looking for a crutch. I think the reality is more that this is, for many people, the least fun part about Fantasy.

I know in a couple of my IRL leagues there are a couple of owners who send out at least one incredibly lopsided trade offer to every owner every single week. Every Monday when there’s the inevitable string of “buy low, sell high” articles on the popular websites you’ll can count on seeing a trade offer in your inbox for your stud RB who happened to flop last week in exchange for a WR who came up gimpy. It’s frigging exhausting.

Yet…inevitably there’s one week around week 7 where a owner who’s struggling (and historically kind of half-asses everything anyways) says fuck it and just blows his team up. So that guy sending out stupid trade offers tends to get rewarded for being persistent. It’s inevitable, history indicates it’s good tactics too…so why would he stop? It’s like playing dirty politics. It’s distasteful, but honestly it’s near impossible to win without it.

Setting aside the extreme example above, I don’t really want to spend my Tuesday every week reminding myself who is on who’s roster and then sending a bunch of DMs to the rest of the league. 98% or more of those discussions lead nowhere. Maybe I’m just self-conscious, but I also worry that I’m annoying everyone too. I’d rather watch highlights and start studying my matchups for next week. But I see how valuable it is to be that guy constantly pushing for trades. And in spite of your comments about the Cam Akers trade…you wouldn’t work the trade market so hard if you didn’t think that it was a net advantage for your team, so I don’t buy this idea that this is just a series of coin flips, you know it’s not and that’s why you do it.

I’m back and in again. Votes below.

Requirement to Publicly Post All Accepted Trades
No.

Reseeding
Yes, this makes for unparalleled drama which is something this league definitely needs more of. Plus, the hindsight $0.02 is the best. Totally support.

Trade Deadline
Anytime before the playoffs start.

Consolation Bowl FAAB Benefit
$10 is fine, no hard feelings about this one way or the other.

Superflex
No, not for this league.

One other thought if there is any interest… Beef and I had a discussion last season during an ultimately unsuccessful trade negotiation regarding protecting future draft picks.

I’d have to dig up the details but I think he had offered his Player A and his 2022 2nd Round pick for my Player B plus whatever. I countered with an offer for his 2022 1st rounder with the caveat that he could protect the pick if it was top 6, like they do with the NBA. So if, post trade, his team tanked and he ended up with a top draft pick, I’d still get his 2nd rounder. But, presuming the trade worked and his team got better, he’d end up with a pick at the back half of the 1st round which I would then get.

Obviously, the mechanics of this would have to be worked out. We ultimately decided, rightly, that it wouldn’t work to propose in the middle of the season so I’m just throwing it out there if there is any interest in discussing it further. I haven’t heard of this in any IRL leagues but I presume that some you may have. Thoughts?

I swear something similar to this has happened in the past. I can’t see what would be wrong with it or why it would even need to be voted on as an official rule.

I’m fine with conditional picks as long as both parties post to the tread at season end about what the final trade is.

I also don’t think that any special conditions need to be placed on conditional picks so long as you end up with the correct number of picks/players at the end of the draft.

Pretty sure it was a trade between me and beef that was similar. Possibly jules, but I think it was beef.

It was around 5 years ago, and the trade involved something along the lines of “My 2nd for your 3rd, but only if they are within a dozen picks of each other.” Meaning if the trade would have ended up being 2.1 for 3.12, the trade would be off. But if it was 2.10 for 3.2, they’d get swapped. We were just trying to even out the values a little bit.

Agreed.

It sounds fine to me, but also hard to keep track of.

IIRC we originally argued that trading future draft picks was too much bookkeeping. While I think that’s still a bit of a risk, if we’re able to manage that I don’t see conditional picks being any more onerous.

I was always against trading future picks. For some reason in my mind I thought we landed on you can trade next year’s picks, but not multiple years out. But I have no clear memory of it; maybe I dreamed that.

I like the idea, though, and would vote for it. (Being able to trade next year’s picks but not multiple years out.)

For conditional picks specifically, definitely fine since it’s happened in the past. When I did it the onus was on us to keep track of it ourselves, which seems reasonable.

That is the rule. You can only trade picks one year out, which starts with the start of the draft. So, once our draft kicks off this year, we would then be able to trade 2023 picks.

None of us are getting any younger; so yes, trade only for the following year makes sense.

What are the dates for final cuts and 1st pick?

Cuts are due by 12:00p ET Monday, Aug. 29th. We’re still waiting on @Overly_Sentimental to check in, but his 1st pick timer would start at 12:01p that same day
