SDMB Fantasy Football DYNASTY league: Year Ten

  1. M. Stafford
  2. Allen Hurns
  1. Ross
  2. Bal

If the caliber of the general player pool about equivalent to what’s left? I’m not too excited about anybody else.

Unowned players at the time of the draft are waiver wire quality and usually nothing great. It’s usually better to draft a bunch of rookies and hope you hit big on one. I’d say on average people go into the draft with like 4.5 draft picks.

After reviewing where you are now as detailed below, I’d say that right now your available pool of picks is about as exciting as you find in the 3rd round of the main draft. By the 5th and 6th rounds, the main question starts becoming “Is this player actually on an NFL roster right now? If so, is he going to survive the final cuts to 53?”

I would definitely try to get at least 18 guys on your roster before stopping, and taking 20 wouldn’t be a bad idea. From my perspective, I see at least 7 guys left in the remaining pool that are definitely worth taking in this new owner draft, no question.

For ease of analysis, here are your individual rosters by position:
Overly Sentimental

03.1 Overly - Deshaun Watson, QB, Hou (26)
06.2 Overly - Jared Goff, QB, LAR (66)

08.2 Overly - Duke Johnson Jr., RB, Cle (98)
09.1 Overly - C.J. Anderson, RB, Car (133)
11.1 Overly - Giovani Bernard, RB, Cin (169)
13.1 Overly - C.J. Prosise, RB, Sea

01.1 Overly - Antonio Brown, WR, Pit (9)
02.2 Overly - Davante Adams, WR, GB (13)
04.2 Overly - Sammy Watkins, WR, KC (47)
12.2 Overly - Josh Doctson, WR, Was (72) <=== Nice value!
07.1 Overly - DeVante Parker, WR, Mia (79)
10.2 Overly - Randall Cobb, WR, GB (107)
14.2 Overly - John Ross, WR, Cin (148)

05.1 Overly - Jacksonville, DEF, Jax
15.1 Overly - Baltimore, DEF, Bal
Ol’Gaffer

07.2 Gaffer - Cam Newton, QB, Car (71)
13.2 Gaffer - Matthew Stafford, QB, Det (96)

02.1 Gaffer - Alvin Kamara, RB, NO (8)
04.1 Gaffer - LeSean McCoy, RB, Buf (36)
06.1 Gaffer - Rex Burkhead, RB, NE (190)
12.1 Gaffer - Theo Riddick, RB, Det

01.2 Gaffer - Odell Beckham Jr., WR, NYG (6)
05.2 Gaffer - Michael Crabtree, WR, Bal (97)
09.2 Gaffer - Emmanuel Sanders, WR, Den (118)
11.2 Gaffer - Robby Anderson, WR, NYJ (104)
10.1 Gaffer - Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Buf (126)
14.1 Gaffer - Allen Hurns, WR, Dal (139)

03.2 Gaffer - Zach Ertz, TE, Phi (43)
08.1 Gaffer - Greg Olsen, TE, Car (106)
And from this angle, you’ll both want to enter the main draft with a bare minimum of:
[ul][li]2 QBs[/li][li]4 RBs[/li][li]5 WRs[/li][li]2 TEs[/li][li]2 DEFs[/li][li]1 K[/ul][/li]So there are still some holes left to plug.

Thanks for the analysis of this guys.
I can already say I’ll be looking to trade wr depth for breathing rbs… Though I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Minor correction: In the above list, pick 15.2 is actually Gaffer, not Overly as listed. Otherwise it appears to be correct.

If it were me – keeping in mind that I’m not good – I’d probably take two DEFs with Gaffer’s next two picks (currently on the clock) and two TEs with Overly’s next two picks just to fill out the rosters. And of course Gostkowstki is starting to look super appealing right about now.

DEFs are rough because there are only 32, making them a bit of a precious commodity. With 12 owners that’s a minimum of 24 taken, but several owners carry three DEFs and some (like me) carry four. (More evidence of why I suck at this.) If you end up with 2, and both have the same bye week, you’re forced to pick through the dregs in the FA pool just to have someone to start. But even aside from that, having at least two lets you play matchups week to week, which helps a lot.

Kickers are in a similar position to DEFs, but less so because at least kickers change. (DEFs never change.) I like carrying two kickers mainly so that I have an easy drop if I need to make temporary room on my roster to deal with byes.

In hindsight, I think the ABBAABB… format was a good choice. Not just to speed things up, since that’s been a total non-issue once things got going, but to alleviate tedium. If you guys were picking 1 at a time I think it would have been much more annoying for you.
EDIT: For context on how the main draft goes, picture this year’s NFL draft. Remove all the defensive players and offensive lineman. Now take away the best 24 QBs, RBs, WRs, and TEs. The slim pickings you’re left with is what the player pool looks like at the start of round 3. You can also draft non-rookies, but the concept doesn’t change.

Oh yeah, don’t forget that you’re also drafting your draft position, though they’re both essentially equal value. I’m thinking the first person who drops out will finish by selecting their choice of draft picks, leaving the other set for the other guy. Your choices are:

1.09, 2.09, 3.09, 4.09, 5.09…
1.12, 2.06, 2.12, 4.12, 5.12… (two 2nds, no 3rd)

If one seems much better than the other to you, there’s no shame in choosing your draft picks before you finish selecting players.

For context, by 2.06 in the main draft you might already be looking at guys who will do nothing this year but might be good next year or the year after. By round 3 that’s definitely what you’re looking at, and by round 4 you’re wondering why you decided to draft more than 3 guys.

Thank you for the analysis gentlemen, this is an interesting format and one that I suppose takes a little time to get used to.

Clarification for - Is Carson Palmer available? He was not on the list of QBs originally posted (Newton, Watson, Goff, Stafford, Taylor).

  1. Gostkowski
  2. Carolina

Palmer retired and I think it’s unlikely he pulls a Cutler.

He retired in January. Apparently Yahoo! didn’t purge him from the system until after I first posted the list in July.

Dang. He was my ultimate late-round sleeper.

Because he’ll be literally napping during game days?

Hamlet and Overly Sentimental - I sent you invites to the new league but they haven’t been taken yet. Are you having issues joining the new league?

I’m also having some trouble filling absenses in the other leagues - got some in All-pro, HHM, and big league. Is anyone interested in playing in any of them?

  1. Clay
  2. Allen

The cut deadline is going to be tomorrow night at 11:59pm, so get those cuts in. The draft will start on Sunday.

Remember that you might’ve had players on IR at the end of the year, so your number of cuts may not be your number of draft picks. Your draft picks are always the number of empty slots below 25.

I should be in there. I changed my team name (but kept the Hamlet).

I’ll be out of town until Monday, but hopefully I can get online for my picks.

Here’s my info:

Cutting:

Alfred Morris
Dontrelle Inman
Damien Williams
Mike Gillislee
Jamaal Charles
Julius Thomas
Nathan Peterman
Trevor Sieman

Roster

QB

Phillip Rivers
Patrick Mahommes

RB

David Johnson
Jamaal Williams
Marlon Mack
Corey Clement
Austin Ekeler
Peyton Barber
Adrian Peterson

WR

Keenan Allen
Michael Thomas
Marqise Lee
Michael Williams
Pierre Garcon

TE

Jared Cook

K

Jake Elliot
Justin Tucker

DEF

Eagles
49ers

That’s a roster of 19, so I should have 6 picks (whew) this year.

When Sunday?

My final cuts are the same that I posted in Post #19:

Cuts
Orleans Darkwa NYG - RB
Wayne Gallman NYG - RB
Paul Perkins NYG - RB
Kenny Britt NE - WR
Jason Witten Dal - TE

So it looks like I’ll have five picks for the draft: 1.03 1.11, 2.03, 4th Round, and 5th Round

  1. Rod Smith
  2. New England

Yahoo doesn’t have my roster on the league page. Where can I view it?
