Are we really afraid of people sandbagging for draft position in this league? I think the bottom teams should get the top picks.
I’m not, but I never finish at the very bottom, so…
I don’t think it’s so much that you don’t want people sandbagging for position, but to make the consolation bowl more fun.
I don’t even understand how the draft order was this year. I finished 8th last year and somehow got the 8th pick. I think you guys just like to invent the most complicated scenarios possible.
The bottom four teams got picks 1-4.
The consolation round winner got #5 with the runner-up getting #6. The winner of the 7th Place Game got #7 and you (as the loser of the 7th Place Game) got #8.
The top four teams got picks 9-12.
This seems OK to me to continue.
Justin Bailey described it accurately. The point was to make the consolation bracket something other than a chore, since if we did draft order purely by reverse order of finish then everyone in the consolation bracket would prefer to lose their games and move up in the draft.
As for making the consolation bracket a tourney for the #1 pick, I think *probably *that’s a discussion for this offseason, though I’m not opposed in principal (ambivalent is more like it). Disclaimer: I’m slated to have the #4 pick at the moment, and under Ellis’ proposal I’d be moved down to #8. If there were to form a strong consensus for making that change effective immediately, I’d be happy to withdraw my objection.
Assuming no changes, the current order at the top of the draft is dale, RetroVertigo, Omni, and then me, with the rest TBD.
I’m opposed to the idea of players who finish 5-8 getting picks 1-4. The teams at the bottom of the league need the help more than we need to add something interesting to the consolation bowl.
Or, even if you were going to go in that direction, there’s no need to have all four people in the middle bracket to get the top 4 picks - you could just get the consolation bowl winner the #1, and reverse the rest in order. I don’t like this either, but I have no idea why the guy who wins 8th plast in the consolation bowl should be drafting higher than all 4 of the bottom finishers.
Or break it down into 3 groups - 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, and then have the consolation bowls determine how they’re drafted within that order, but having the 5-8 seeds getting picks 1-4 just seems very bad to me.
But if we want to give winning (and only winning) a consolation value, I’d say give the #5 pick to the guy who wins the actual consolation bowl, and the #1 pick to the guy who wins a manually-run consolation bowl out of the bottom 4 seeds. With the rest of the picks done in order.

Well, I went from what might’ve been the league best QB situation (Rodgers, Orton) to… nothing. Rodgers is going to be out, and Orton is hurt, not practicing, and they’re thinking about giving Tebow a try.
That leaves me with… Alex Smith. I can’t even wait until later to find out if those guys will be out for sure, because Smith plays tonight. Against one of the best pass defenses in the NFL.
Awesome.
Joe Webb is available!
Thought about starting him at WR actually but I think it’s really cheesy abusing ambiguous position listings like that.
Damn it, Alex Smith accidentally did something good and they took it away.
Gah they must really hate Matthews to give Tolbert like 5 goal line carries in a row.
I sure do love that Mike Tolbert.
For next year, what does everyone think about allowing draft pick trading? I think it would be interesting to be able to trade draft picks in August up until a day or so before the draft.
I wouldn’t want to allow future year draft pick trading since we don’t know who will definitely be in from year to year. But, once the league is set for 2011, I think draft pick trading could be interesting.
Well, I guess going from last place to even making the playoffs is something of an accomplishment.
1.25 points for Mr. Smith. Should I have picked up Matt Flynn and started him? Ugh.
If I remember right, draft pick trading was allowed this year but no one did it.
It is probably just easier to trade for someone immediately after the draft like Varlos snatching Mike Williams from me.
I’m in favor of offseason trades. This league doesn’t lend itself to many trades because there aren’t many draft picks, but I see nothing wrong with allowing them. I suppose there could be some good pick-for-player trades to be had.
