SDMB FF Dynasty League: Year Two

I’m in favor of keeping the divisions as they are. Can’t build rivalries if you switch up the teams every year and I think these divisions worked out well for evenly matched teams (as RNATB’s 28-28 comment shows).

I’ve also PMed my cuts to Varlos. Let me know if there’s a problem.

Nitpick: 16-16. A division going 12-12 against itself is evidence of arithmetic, not parity. The interdivisional games did end up perfectly even, so your point is still valid.

Yeah, yeah, I just didn’t feel like totting up the divisional games separately since they were obviously going to come out even.

I’m a little confused. How would a draft-then-keep system work?

I was under the impression that you’d make a cut list with whatever number of players you wanted to cut. Whoever you cut, along with rookies, would enter the group of elegible players to be drafted. The commish can do this just by setting picks X-25 as keepers, with X being 1 more than the number of players you cut.

IE you cut 5 players, you get a round 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 pick in the draft, and your 6-25 picks will be entered as the players you’re keeping from last year. (This can be set in the draft setup by the commissioner). This way yahoo will automatically know who’s draftable and who isn’t - the players that will be kept will be pre-assigned to the appropriate team and therefore be undraftable. This simplifies and error-proofs the draft compared to one where we drafted whoever we wanted but could accidentally draft a kept player.

This would give a person who cut 10 players 10 draft picks, but I’m not sure if that’s an advantage at all. Let’s say we all cut at least 5 players - and the players cut won’t be very good on average because someone decided they weren’t keeping. We’d have 5*12=60 rookies drafted. So the guy who cut 6 players instead of 5 gets the 61st best rookie (actually, the 61st best rookie or player that was cut/undrafted last year)- how much is that worth? Chances are at that point the 16th player on the guy’s roster, who he could’ve kept, is in the same ballpark or better than the 61st best rookie/cut/undrafted.

I wouldn’t expect there to be a race to rack up as many cuts/draft picks as possible because the quality available is going to drop pretty quickly and our rosters are already filled with some good long term prospects.

How would a draft-then-keep system work logistically? I’m not quite sure how we’d do that. I just took it for granted that we were doing it as described above.

I may not be able to make Sunday the 29th, I’d say it’s 60/40 in favor of me making it at this point. However, if that date is better for everyone, I could rank players and autodraft. This draft is relatively short so I wouldn’t mind that terribly. That’s actually another advantage of doing it as I suggested above - once Varlos enters which players are keepers, we’ll have a full list of the players that are still available to draft, and we can pre-rank them.

As far as divisions, my preferences are A) Remake divisions based on record every year with a 1-4 elite, 5-8 middling, 9-12 scrub set. The divisions in themselves bring prestige, the best compete against the best, and but some of the scrubs will make the playoffs (which, to some degree, gives a slightly greater edge to the highest-slotted teams). B) Reseed the same way as above this year to get a baseline, but relegate team up and one team down every season instead of reseeding them entirely every year. C) Change nothing or scrap divisions. I’m equally ok with either of those situations - I wanted to try divisions last year to see how it affected the play but the essentially random nature of the divisions leaves them kind of without meaning. I’d be fine with going back to a standard format with no divisions involved in the seeding, but I have no problem continuing divisions like they are now. They just don’t have much meaning as they currently are.

I assume it works the way you’ve written it, it just sounds funny to say it’s the “Draft Then Keep” system because that’s actually the opposite way it happens even though Yahoo “officially” processes them that way.

The way ours will: you get to draft up until your remaining picks are equal to the number of players you’re keeping. So, yeah, cutting players after a certain point won’t do you much good.

But we’re talking about having it work logistically as I said, right? You make your cuts, Varlos goes in, sets the draft order, sets the keepers, and you get a pick for every cut player at the front of your draft, and all of your kept players at the end of the draft? I just want to make sure we’re on the same page here - that seems by far the best way to do this. and ideally Varlos could get our picks in soon after they’re submitted so we can start looking over the list of players available and determining our draft boards.

Yes. I think it’ll be enough if he just posts all the cut players to the thread, since I doubt more than a dozen will be redrafted anyway.

ETA: have you given any more thought to trading Byron Scott? Alternatively, I’m willing to trade Benson.

How much time will we have to pre-rank players (once yahoo has cut down our available players)? I ask as my pay league draft is that night and I possibly won’t make it.

Right now, it’s set so that pre-rankings have to be locked in at least 45 minutes before draft time. So that’ll give us roughly two and a half days to create pre-rankings.

I actually can’t imagine anybody worthwhile will still be on the board past the second or third round.

Presumably starting whenever Varlos enters the keeper data after the cut deadline. Hopefuly he can get it entered that night so we’ll have 2 nights to look over the list of who’s available. If you’re too busy Varlos, I may be able to do it - but I’m still not home and I’m not sure if I’ll be around to.

I think there will be worthwhile picks around then, but not too many - which is why I was a bit confused over worry that people will cut 10 players to get 10 draft picks - who’s good that will be available by the 70th pick?

Rookies, maybe.

Out of all the QB/RB/WR rookie lists I’ve looked over, nearly all of them include the same six or seven guys with a few stragglers if its a top ten list. So, at best, you’ve got maybe 30 guys that the experts believe could do something.

Honestly though, among the guys I’m cutting, getting a practice squad scrub back would be a positive move.

Yeah, I don’t think I’m giving anything away when I say I’m dumping Maurice Morris and Brian Leonard.

ETA: Fun fact- I won the league last year with just one 1,000 yard rusher.

Tough decision, but I’ll have to cut JaMarcus Russell unless FF stands for Felon Football!

I don’t really care if you guys know I’m cutting Ryan Moats and Chris Brown. I really wanted to cut Fargas but then Denver went and signed him, ugh.

Sorry I haven’t responded to this yet. I’ve been out of town and/or extremely busy lately and I’ve barely kept up with getting the leagues in gear. I’ll try to make time to look over our rosters soon.

I’ve taken a turn for the worse in my wait for a new kidney and liver. I don’t think I can compete effectively in this FF league, so I sent Omni a note offfering him my team spot. I see that SenorBeef and Varloz have gotten back to me, so I’ll withdraw my team for Omni when he’sready. My apologies for not doing this sooner, I had intened to play through but it does take a little pressure off me.

I’m still with the He Hate Me league.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your health problems. Best of luck getting healthy.

Best of luck in your recovery, TMH.
