Excuse me for butting in, but is anyone here doing Tai Chi?
I’ve heard good things about it, but is it good for weight loss too?
I’ve been doing the 3 days a week at the gym during lunch thing for about 3 months now. 20 min. on the bike for aerobics and 20 min. of weights.
I feel good, but haven’t noticed much dimensional loss.
Anyway, just asking.
Well, I was absolutely not going to work out today. I was going to let my bad attitude prevail…but my dog talked me out of it. She is now conditioned to the nightly walk and she gets agitated in the evening. We didn’t go last night and I just felt too guilty gypping her two nights in a row.
So I’m up to 1.8 miles, about 40% of which is up moderate to very steep hills. It’s HARD. I have to stop to catch my breath alot…but it’s also cool. I like it. in fact, I almost prefer the uphill to the downhill. While it’s hard, I know I’m getting a good workout. But the downhill just hurts my toes and strains my legs.
I’m also trying to learn my Pilates and I’m lifting almost every other day. The food is better, but not great. I’m just really glad that I’m still motivated with the workout.
and you guys?
stoid
I’ve continued lifting weights with my PT for a few sessions until I’m sure I won’t aggravate my back. The muscle soreness is gone, so I’m back in the groove again. At least two more session with my PT, then I go back to working out on my own. Plus I am starting physical therapy for my back problems on Saturday morning, which will be lots of back and ab work.
I am still up a few pounds from going off my eating program, but it’s mainly water weight which should drop off in a few more days - several pounds of it already has.
I’d still like to lose a few more inches and decrease my body fat percentage, and getting back into lifting weights and sticking to my eating program should do it. Of course I have the drinking binge that is ChiDope coming up next week…but I’m sure it will be worth the sacrifice.
Inspired by the Olympics, I’ve taken up long-distance running. What’s really keeping me going is that I signed up for a 5K Run competition in early December, so now I know I’ve gotta train for it.
Two or three weeks ago, I finally made it to the point where I could run the full 5 kilometers without having to throttle back to a walk. This last week, though, I seem to have slipped back – I can only run about 3 kilometers before I poop out. Sometimes after about 2 kilometers I even get light-headed, or this weird pseudo-numb feeling in my arms. I hope I’m not having a stroke or something.
Uh, Tracer…I don’t want to seem alarmist or anything, but may I suggest that you haul your ass to your doctor IMMEDIATELY…like…NOW?
This sounds REALLY bad to me, and I don’t think you should screw around with it a moment longer.
Please, please…what you describe is not normal, especially after you have gone farther and longer with no problem.
Let us know.
I check my status on getting in shape once a month. I never liked the idea of checking a scale every day. I have hit the halfway point! I lost eight pounds this month. I may not make my goal for Christmas but I will be close. My blood pressure has dropped to 130/84 (I get to be removed from the borderline list)
Any others of the SDMB-GISSG want to check in.
I’ve started walking at least a mile a day, plus I try to stay on my elliptical machine for at least 3 minutes. I’m also trying to eat more fruit, less junk. If I don’t do this slowly, I’ll jurt my back and end up a couch potato again. I’m about ready to go back to my water aerobics classes. And I’ve stopped going out to lunch everyday at work. Now if I could just incorporate some veggies into my diet, I think I’m on a roll here.
Next week I’ll try to up my walk to two miles and up my elliptical time to 4 minutes. I have a pilates tape that I’m going to check out. I want to take belly dancing classes too. And I’ve been thinking about going to my old stables and helping them with the horses. Maybe if I make this fun, I’ll stick to it.
Hanging out at 119-120. Maybe this is it for me, maybe at my age now 115 is a little unrealistic. I am going to continue to work out as much as I can though, and see if I can’t turn my 119 into muscle. My motivation is that in another 6 or 7 months I am going to Hawaii, and I need to look decent in a bikini.
My workouts have been going well, I actually need to go out and buy heavier weights.
Have to put in my two (in this case three) cents…
The (for lack of better term) ‘proper’ way to get in shape is a combinatoin of three things: Eating well (or at least not eating shite), moderate to heavy weight lifting (depending on what your goals are), and aerobic activity. Do these three and you’re good to go, skip one or two and all you are doing is fooling yourself.
And for my money, jumping rope is the best aerobic activity if you don’t need to worry about joint stress. I can actually get my legs to sweat jumping rope, and I’m not a sweater by any means. If you do have joint concerns, SWIM!
punk snot dead,
broccoli
(p.s. I’m a massage therapist and a certified personal trainer, so this isn’t just some punkass loser talking out his rear)
2 miles a day. Almost half of it uphill.
Did you hear that? TWO MILES - ONE UPHILL. EVERY DAY.
AND… weight training every other day.
AND…swimming.
AND…I want you all to be aware that 3 years from now, when I have become a fitness guru, that I won’t forget the little people I knew on the way up.
Stoid…all 300 pounds of her getting a little carried away at the fact that she is really digging doing all this exercise.
