I was a mason in the very first game I was in. I held out on a claim because there were two other masons left. After I got killed, my failure to claim and name the other masons very nearly took the town down, and only didn’t because the scum were flaming out a bit (that was one of the games that started the reputations of both Idle and zuma, after all. =P)
Holding out on a mason mass claim once one is exposed is at least mildly anti-town. So what if masons are out there and named targets? Especially in the early game the scum is going to be more interested in sussing out our power roles than thinning our confirmed townies, and with this kind of mason situation, having a partial claim out there only furthers the problem, because if amrussell dies tonight then the chain of confirmation is broken and if, say, we have only one more mason on that end of the chain he becomes vanilla AND fodder for a scum false claim.
I’m going to go so far as to advocate that the masons all claim now–and I do that because my failure to precipitate a mason mass claim in Sekham led directly to Monkgate.
Yes, and why I’m vaguely amused by the people trying to put a role name to me already. Have we not learned yet that color doesn’t mean squat? Honestly, would anyone have expected Professor Xavier to be scum in Skrull Planet? A town aligned necromancer in Apocolypse? We all need to stop assuming things just because of flavor. If I were a Troll, that doesn’t mean I’m not pro town. That said, I will state again that I am not a Troll, nor am I a Pit Dweller. In fact, I’ll go even farther than that. My role name is not on the list posted by Og at all. Please note that he stated they were possible role names, not that they were the only roles in the game.
These aren’t seperate issues. What is revealed will depend on the circumstances of the Mod kill. Generally speaking, it will be whatever is most detrimental to the team of the player who was Mod-killed.
I think you’re overestimating your experience with Monkgate. Masons are confirmable townies, and that’s a massive help to the town in an endgame. RIght now, amrussell is a decent scum target because of his ability to continue the mason change, and I love a situation where the scum have to WIFOM their nightkills with any doctors we might have out there. Wanting the masons to keep quiet is definitely not an anti-town technique, it’s holding an ace in the hole for later. This is Day One, and for the town to do well, we need to look at it like that.
We seem to have people making plans for the masons that may or may not be town. Before I start getting involved in the discussion I’m curious what our two confirmed pro-town players think.
I don’t think we need to have the other mason(s) claim yet. We do need to have them claim before we get to Lynch or Lose.
Look, assume that the scum want to kill them, and the doc wants to protect them. Right now there’s a 50/50 shot of the scum missing their kill. Having another claim lowers their chances of survival to 33%.
What’s the downside of waiting? Well, scum might claim to be the last mason. If so, they will be counterclaimed by the true mason. That means that we, at worst, will 1:1 trade a mason for scum; a great deal. At best, we lynch the scum false claimer first.
The only time that’s disastrous is if it happens in LoL, and we lynch the true mason. As long as we get the situation sorted before we’re in that kind of danger, there’s no need to reveal it now.
Why do you think scum would even bother playing your WIFOM game? Masons are players with no power. Nothing, nada, they can’t do anything. They are useful if they can be sprung on the scum in end game. They are also useful in that they can give the town some confirmed town roles. If one dies, it can be assumed they were telling the truth and the rest of the list is not going to be day lynched.
It doesn’t matter tonight, but the longer the chain remains open the longer the last link has to be protected. This creates a conflict if there are other power roles that need protection too. Honestly I’d rather have scum pick off the masons for the next three or four nights and thus carry the real power roles into end game.
I’d rather they not do that. Masons are great in endgame, because they’re confirmed Townies, and reduce the pool in which scum can hide in. I’d rather see the scum pick off vanilla Townies for 3 or 4 nights myself (well, I’d really rather see them pick off some PFK players, if there are any, but better vanilla than Mason).
Incidentally, I have two posts already, so to you people saying I only have one.
If you are assuming the two outed masons are telling the truth why do you think they will make it to endgame? They are going to be picked off. If we do have a doc he has to play some serious WIFOM games and cannot protect any other power roles if they need to come forward.
I’m not advocating for a full chain reveal today, I’m just saying it can’t last and the masons aren’t something we can depend on in end-game.
Oh, certainly, they can avoid that if they want to. You cut the part where I said to assume they want tthem dead.
Masons HAVE to be killed before endgame. Period. Scum cannot afford to let them live forever. They don’t necessarily have to do it now, but they can’t wait forever, either. This is standard mafia practice.
I’d rather have the scum be forced into a couple of bad choices that could easily backfire on them.
I took that to mean “we’re giving you this list and not which ones exist or how many or anything else” rather than necessarily “this list is all-inclusive”.
Just a quick couple of observations. Just a general flavor for the game thus far.
pede. When you get to the bottom of a hole, it at times, make sense to stop digging.
Explanation: Being at the bootom of a hole is considered “bad”. Unless it’s a dead body then being at the bottom of a whole in terms of burial is an effective means of preventing cholera.
Cripes, a mason claim on day one. As FCOD said in the off site game after the Zeriel lynch “that was quick” (paraphrased).
Explanation: This turned out to be bad for town.
hero gets a semi pass for now since I don’t know him from Adam and Eve.
Explanation: In the beginning … Yada yada yada.
And I’ve never played with JSex but damn. Motherfucking Great White going after Richard Dreyfus.
Explanation: There was this movie when this fish was eating locals and tourists at this beach. So they thought it would be a good idea to blow the MF up. They did. Afterwards Richard Dreyfus and Roy Schnider had sex on the beach. That begat Blue Lagoon which totally sucked turkey legs.
I don’t like Nanook’s claim one Iota.
Explanation: Iota is a letter in the Greek alphabet. I believe it to be diminutive meaning smallish, speckish or I can’t see that for shit.
Vote Nanook
I will only add the explanations for a short until the newbies get caught up.
Jeez ask a question, go to bed, and wake up in the vote lead.
Count me in as another one who really did not see ‘hey new page’ and have it twig that JSexton had not seen Pedescribes role claim.
Jsexton post looked odd to me so i asked question, simple as that.
Not sure I would classify my question as an attack on Jsexton, but YMMV and all.
