Part of me thinks it’s good, because it prevents a scum swoop at the end of the Day. I wish MHaye were to play in a game like this, though, due to the style and timing of his voting.
Sure am glad we get a couple extra hours to talk strategy. I opened the quote window, had lunch, and then composed my post. Lucky it’s still a little light out!
So anyone got a plan for the night while we can still talk about it, otherwise I’m going to get with the drinking.
Oredigger, man… it’s still light outside!
Although I would totally join you if I were closer, but I’m in the central part of your state this weekend.
I’m curious as to why you feel that way. The setup is experimental, so any and all feedback on it would be appreciated.
I think it’s really interesting - it really shakes up the game. There may, though, be a feeling among people that after 48 hours it’s just kind of “extra time” - not as meaningful, etc. Personally I wasn’t able to post much recently because of work training, but I can see that as a possible issue.
Checking EST time…
Color-coded post count. I’ll do these as long as I’m alive. I recommend someone else doing them after that.
NBC : 6 (Santo Rugger, Hal Briston, Pedescribe, Zeriel, JSexton, Nanook o/t North Shore)
Nanook o/t North Shore : 5 ((BS PI, Hero from Sector 7G, Peekercpa, Oredigger77, NBC)
DiggitCamara : 2 (ok11, ShadowFacts)
Hero from Sector 7G : 2 (One and Only Wanderers, Total Lost)
Zeriel : 2 (Kat, amrussell)
Kat : 1 (Zsofia)
peekercpa : 1 (Fretful Porpentine)
ok11 : 1 (DiggitCamara)
Colors: Unknown, Town, Scum
The unpredictable ending time doesn’t bother me. The post restriction (no strategy talk at Night) does.
Jsexton, what in particular don’t you like?
I like it as a person - but I hate it as a player!
I mean - the idea of Day to end random makes me (in Europe) more likely to be around when it happens. I feel I don’t miss out as much as in ohter games…
As a player in the game - I get a bit anxious when I log-off, not knowing when day will end. I did feel it was a bit anti-scum (because they can’t hammer like in a fixed Day-end) but I’m starting to see it as anti-town:
We get a lot of claims
A lot of unvoting/voting with claims
A bit of panic when ever we’re ready to go to sleep - not knowing what we’ll wake up to in the morning
I’d agree with this. The problem is that people aren’t at their computers at predictable or regular times. When you have consistant deadlines, people can plan around them, making sure to keep an eye out more the closer to a deadline. With this though…you can’t. And I think that’s bad.
Can we?
I think we were right to take a strong line on the importance of getting a vote in in the first 48 hours - otherwise we run the risk of losing accountability for lynchings. However, we failed to address an even more important point - what should “early” vote-leaders do?
Understandably enough, we forced a number of role-claims (although we also had a number of unforced ones, which is a separate issue). Given the uncertain and precarious position vote-leaders are in, it’s natural enough to reach for the big stick when defending oneself. But there are problems with this - if you are town, and role-claim, and get led from the gallows on sufferance, the upshot is that you’ve outed yourself. Knowing this, claimants are reluctant to disclose their powers. As a result, we have to take them at their word when they say they will confirm later. Scum may well be able to manipulate this - even if not, scum have a good chance of making an “acceptable” role claim, e.g. not open to challenge, and at least enough to keep them alive for a couple of days.
The end result is that if we do catch scum, we probably let them go; if we catch town, we out them without being able to confirm them. This is unsatisfactory.
Solutions are hard to come by. I would suggest that, as far as possible, we try to adopt the following broad strategy:
All votes must give clear, well-laid out reasoning. “Me too” votes, unjustified votes, and especially OMGUS votes pile up the pressure on vote-leaders without giving them opportunity to defend themselves.
Avoid voting for the vote leader. If anyone is two votes in the lead, it will take three votes for the second place to make them safe. If you agree that the vote leader should swing, by all means FOS them. This will be as accountable as a vote. If they get overtaken, then you can vote for them to keep them in the lead. By doing this, we will give vote-leaders the opportunity to refute accusations against them without going for the nuclear option of role-claim. Conversely, if they know they have to overturn, say, five votes then they will feel the pressure to sing like canaries.
If you are vote leader, this is your opportunity to display some fortitude. Your first defence should be refutation. If you’re accused of a slip, explain it. If you’ve contradicted yourself, explain it. Be hesitant to claim. The short-term benefits are clear (if we believe you); the long-term costs are also clear (more to you than to us, in fact). If you must claim, tell us when you can confirm yourself. We will hold you to that.
Other than that, we should begin to ask ourselves when it’s in our best interests to mass claim. I wouldn’t say yet. But if we keep outing ourselves in dribs and drabs, we get all the costs and none of the benefits.
I don’t really like this. I think it is rarely in Mafia a good tactic not to vote for the person you personally find most scummy. That FOS crap is a good way for scum to hide - it isn’t as easily trackable as a vote, although more trackable than a subtle smudge, and before you know it everybody knows there’s something kinda scummy about Poster A but nobody quite remembers that it’s because Poster B has been FOSing them or just smudging them.
On the other hand, you’re certainly right that it’s hard to escape a bandwagon without the “nuclear option” of a roleclaim. Even then, what that tends to do is just kind of derail the bandwagon onto somebody else without quite as much consideration as if it had happened another way.
The sun has set. Fluff until systems are back up and running.
Get me a map…I’mma gonna chart out all o you skum…as every member woth sis pocket oll grid me…Oh yeah! :sings karaoke:
What? I don’t have to bread crumb anymore? Awww…
Since we’re no in a town in this game I propose a new nighttime activity - surfing for porn.
Yep that’s a good idea in fact I think I’ll start right now . . .
Oh damn . . .
Forgot about the filters at work. Oh well that cute girl in accounting was wearing a sweater today I think I’ll go say hi.
Maybe instead of a random number of hours, it could be a random number of days (2-6 days instead of 48-144 hours) so, people could at least make the attempt to get online around X o’clock each day?
Hmm, that’s what’s happens when you write a post and then answer the phone before submitted. Sorry.
So, let me tell you all about global warming. :: cues PowerPoint :: This image shows the size of the polar ice cap in 1972…
Hey, where’s everyone going?
Ah, nothing like an arbitrary post restriction to cut off useful discussion.
