As an aside, here’s an article from the BBC showing the range of photos people submitted to their competition on the theme of “the edge”. Quite a range of interpretations!
That’s part of the challenge - in many photo courses the instructor will require you to go out and shoot to a topic or using a certain technique and you come back to the next class with your work. The point of it is to train you to really look around you, look for possibilities and get creative with your interpretation of the assignment. It gets easier with practice. It obviously also helps if you have plenty of time to do it.
I didn’t feel really inspired by this assignment, but I’m impressed by all the great submissions! I’ve only got my votes narrowed down to six at this point.
Aw @#$%^&! I uploaded a pic but then never went back & put it into the competition thread
& it would have gotten double points; notice the single yellow line; he’s driving not down a road but on an airport taxiway. Yes, it was closed for the weekend for the festival
I didn’t have anything to submit this month that I thought was worthy, but at least I voted. My votes were closely aligned with the most popular selections, including voting for @snowthx, to whom congratulations. I also thought @Fiendish_Astronaut’s pic was a classically artsy composition. @Scougs’ picture from atop the Empire State Building gives me the willies as I have a touch of acrophobia – though that didn’t prevent me from visiting there myself, or from walking across the glass floor atop the CN Tower 1,115 ft above the ground. Got the willies those times, too!
Wow! Thank you, everyone! This is unexpected considering the other entries. The shot is from a bike tour along the Oregon coast, along the road to Cape Meares near Tillamook. As we turned off the main road there was a sign that indicated the road was closed ahead. We pulled into a turnout with a bunch of mailboxes to try and determine what to do next and a woman came up to collect her mail. We started chatting with her and asked about the road. She said it was closed to cars due to a slipout a few miles ahead but “thought” it should be okay for bikes. If it was closed closed we’d have to backtrack a number of miles. Fortunately, she was right, and we rode past the slipout no problem. You can see in the photo the leaves piled up on the sides, no cars for a while, but a light fog and the dark forest on both sides of the road made for a memorable photo.
The theme, chosen by @snowthx is “Flowers”. As always, interpret that however you like. Just to note, the submission window is a bit compressed for this one because I’ll be away at the end of the month, so get snapping nice and early. Dates are in the competition thread as always.
I was literally out taking pictures of flowers yesterday – it’s peak wildflower season in California right now. I might have taken a photo to the brief a day before it was announced.
