SDMB Monthly Photo Competition - rolling discussion thread

A famous one from my old stomping grounds:

The July bridges poll is up.

mmm

Thank you, Mr. Mustard!

Oops.

I’m happy at least one person thinks I am in the top 3.

Brian

In the Bridges thread there was talk at the end about “Photo + title” vs. “Photo + title + location + backstory” and so on, and that got me thinking of one thing I’d love to see happen, at least once:

I’d love to see one of the monthly challenge be a photo assignment, and not a “find one in your archives” exercise. To be fair, any photos I have submitted have been from my own archives, but it’s kind of cool to think of people shooting something specifically for this competition.

Use whatever you want to shoot, just make sure the shot happened within the calendar month and fit the category.

Of course, such a challenge would have to be with a low-ball topic since it might be more difficult for people to do so in such a short timeframe.

Just my opinion.

My entry for “Bridges” was shot specifically for that topic, I didn’t have any pics in the digital archives, and couldn’t find my print photos of the Air Intake Bridge at the Mud Mountain Dam in Washington state that I took way back in '93. Was my first steel detailing job for a company I went to work for that year, and I took time off to go and watch them crane the bridge we built into place.

I think it’s more fun to take a photo specifically for the competition, but for some topics, like “bridges”, it had to be archive or nothing.

Hence my comment about a low-ball topic, something that everyone has available around them regardless of location and season.

I would like to see fewer noun-based topics and more adjective-based topics that allow for creative interpretation. That is, for “bridge” you have to go and find a bridge. But for something like “fresh” or “unexpected”, the art is in the interpretation and how well you captured freshness or unexpectedness photographically.

Nice! I like that idea.

I’ll second that. And I believe we should have some variety. Each winner sets the topic and criteria for the following month.

I posted this in the monthly thread:

Let’s call this one settled.

In the monthly thread, post only a photo and a title. Any further info belongs in the rolling discussion thread.

As far as I am concerned, post whatever you’d like in the monthly thread once the poll has ended.

mmm

As an aside, I DID post only a photo and title in the Bridges thread, and it later got annotation from @What_Exit . I don’t really mind the annotation, but I am sort of wondering why. (My guess is that “Confederation” is some kind of trigger-word for the pearl-clutchers?)

I would need a link. No clue what post.

I remember now, I looked up where the bridge was out of curiosity, and as long as I had the info, I added a staff note.

Apologies if I messed something up. That was not my intent.

It sounds like – with the new rules – that won’t be allowed anymore. (I guess you could post the info in the Rolling Discussion Thread). I was just curious. (Was it the “box girder” info that was interesting or the “Canada” part?)

Just FYI, that bridge is 8 miles long and cost $45 to cross (in 2009). Looks like it is up to $50.25 now. (All currency in Canadian dollars.)

More the Canada part.

Just for clarity, I’d say you don’t have to give your photo a title unless you want to. Some may prefer to let the photo speak for itself. And thanks again MMM for taking on the responsibility for keeping these contests going.
