SDMB Monthly Photo Competition - rolling discussion thread

I see no reason why not.

To be fair, this picture is not fresh—in fact it’s about ten years old—and it was fall when I shot it; but I could have shot it in any season, in any part of the world.

I like ‘orange’

Though my ‘spooky/ moody/ atmospheric’ suggestion was inspired by the season here, true, it’s not as if a general moody, atmospheric theme can’t be shot or appreciated any time of year, or in any climate or culture.

This is true, and I also had a thought that even for European Dopers, who are experiencing Fall, the trees in Europe don’t have the beautiful neon oranges and reds in their dying leaves that North American trees do. So I’ve heard, anyway. So that might give us North American dopers a bit of an edge in a ‘Fall’ category. Not that beautiful European photos couldn’t be achieved with more understated leaf coloring.

Maybe if we go this direction we do a conflated ‘Fall / Orange’ category and Dopers who don’t experience Fall or intense Fall colors just go with with the color orange. Or we just go with ‘spooky / moody / atmospheric’. That’s probably my top choice.

We’re a US-centric board, & by the time you add in our Eurasian friends we’re at a vast, vast majority of the board members. Just like the dog in last month’s flying (non-human) category our friends in Upsidedownland can get creative with their submission.
There’s also no rules against submitting photos already taken. Due to my schedule, I don’t have a lot of time this month to visit the pumpkin patch or go leaf peeping if there was a requirement that the photo be taken after whenever the topic is announced & Fall ends up being the category.

OK.

Judging by the comments, it looks like our theme for October 2024 will be:

Moody/Atmospheric !

Which I am sure @solost will be pleased about since it was his idea.

Pinging @Mean_Mr.Mustard so he can post before he leaves. Thanks, mmm and enjoy your vacation.

Thanks, @romansperson. October “Moody/Atmospheric” thread is up and running over yonder.

I guess my repeated chants of “fall colors! fall colors!” went unheeded.

(note that I am about to embark on a two-week autumnal Quebec/New England road trip)

mmm

Sorry! There was no clear winner among the topics and a good deal of quibbling (as there always is here, lol) so here we are

I’m pleased, but I wouldn’t have minded ‘Fall colors’ at all, since I have a metric crap-ton of Fall color pics in the archives. I wouldn’t have been able to shoot a new Fall color pic right now though-- Fall colors are like two weeks behind in SE Michigan, still as green as midsummer around here.

@AHunter3 -
I was at the 9/11 memorial site when they were building that, and I thought it looked just like a rack of lamb:

I’m going to love all the entries this month. Great topic!

Should we allow a photo to be submitted more than once (different months, same photo fits both themes)?

  • Yes
  • No
  • Other, and I shall elaborate
0 voters

Although maybe we should have a hall of fame

I probably wouldn’t vote for a photo I’d seen in a previous contest, but as long as it didn’t win that previous contest I suppose one could keep trying their luck. Winning photos should be excluded from further contests, imo.

Allow a photo to be submitted more than once unless it gets selected as the winner.

I thought the winning photos would make a nice calendar. Also, perhaps all the winning photos could go up against one another at some point, like a dog show, and a uber-winner crowned.

I think I’ve mentioned before (maybe not, who knows?) that we could do a Photo of the Year poll, with the 12 (or more) winning entries.

mmm

Seconded.

I like this, too.

mmm

Ooh, yeah!

Exactly my thought.
