SDMB Monthly Photo Competition - rolling discussion thread

And then make the SMDB calendar

You mean the SDMB calendar isn’t going to be all the mod in sexually suggestive poses?

No one would buy it.

Well, they might pay money to not have to see it, I suppose…

I belong to another group that does a calendar. The top vote getter gets the cover. Of course you look at the cover once or twice until you hang it up & then every ‘lesser’ picture for an entire month.

Guess who has the cover for 2025 ::Sigh::

Isn’t the cover usually also one of the months? So that picture would get a month plus once or twice.

Not in any calendar I’ve ever designed.

On my way to work this morning there was an amazing huge full moon behind some early morning haze that was just setting on the horizon. It was a perfect shot for this month’s “moody/atmospheric” theme but I would have had to pull over and get out of my car and try to snap some pix with 70mph traffic whizzing by, which absolutely was not going to happen.

I saw it too! Fortunately I was on a dirt road, so I pulled over and took the picture. And also fortunately, it didn’t turn out that well so I didn’t have to feel bad about not using it for my contest entry.

That’s not a bad shot. But yeah - the moon always looks tiny in my photos. It’s a funny thing, that.

So is there a thread for the entries this month? i haven’t found it, if so.

Thanks!

I’m going to post a photo here before I add it to the competition because I’m not sure if it’s too post-processed to be acceptable. If so, please tell me and I won’t use it; I have another photo I can enter.

This is from the Rules link:

None of the photos I’ve submitted have been processed or manipulated in any way, but it does look like it’s allowed to a degree.

Hope this helps!

Thanks. I knew there was some post-processing allowed, which only makes sense. But I’m really pushing it with this one to get the effect I wanted.

I think I should get the input of other contestants and the founder of the competition before I go ahead with it. if it’s no-go i have a much less processed shot of the same scarecrow, to wit:

That’s pretty atmospheric, sans manipulation! Nicely done.

Thanks. I guess I should use that one, then. The head is a deer skull; found in the woods beyond the fields of the farm where my horses were boarding. Add a beatup old jacket, tie it to a post with baling twine, and there you are.

Nah, wait and hear what others say. There’s still time, isn’t there?

On the subject of post processing, is it allowable to convert a photo to black and white if it was originally taken in color? Because I think photos can often look moodier in black and white.

I’d be okay with it, but I’m speaking only for myself, of course.
