SDMB Monthly Photo Competition - rolling discussion thread

Same here, I could go to veterans park and take pics of the *dozens * of war memorials erected there but in todays climate of political upheaval with our military occupying public spaces and intimidating the populace Id rather see a photo of people participating patriotically on No Kings Day.

That was one of the ideas I thought about for this contest:

Imgur

I too was conflicted by the theme - my first though was some of the pictures I took at No Kings and Hands Off, but, TBH, I didn’t want to show too many faces, and most of them were good, but weren’t good photos as it were.

Yeah, another pass here. British patriotism at the moment bothers me deeply.

The one I thought about posting would be very similar (I still have to go take it). Another pass this month from me.

Well I did not intend for this theme to be American-centric. I thought patriotism can apply no matter where one may be.

I grasp the concept but I’m not sure I can find anything to shoot.

Hear me say “shoot” like I’m a professional!

I figured it was an accidental trigger. Many on the left see patriotism as a negative given all the questionable deeds done in the name of patriotism over the centuries.
Not surprised with people passing especially as it associated just now with the magots. :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

I really liked my shot of the flares over the harbour at dawn and was glad to have an opportunity to share it. We were on a balcony overlooking the square where the ceremony was under way and it was very full…Anzac day is pretty strong here.

In my town there’s a granite war memorial on a small green that’s currently fenced off, I think for some repair work, perhaps to the walkway to it. I’m thinking I might try getting a shot of it, as a statement about patriotism in present-day America.

True in theory, but for cultures that are naturally cynical, acts of patriotism can be a little embarrassing.

I just want to make clear that in NO way did I doubt your motives. Just the way the right here in America drapes itself in the flag while trashing it’s virtues makes me ill, and my city (Colorado Springs) is a terrible offender when it comes to that. So, as I said upthread, if any of my No Kings / Hands Off photos were good photos, I’d have submitted them.

Okay, I hear ya, all. Thanks for enlightening me. Perhaps I was a bit naive. And @MacDoc I like your photo, am glad you could use it, and I learned about Anzac too.

For No Kings Day this was the best shot I got, but instead I chose to go with the Budweiser cans on the wall forming the flag.

This photo was from El Camino Real in Santa Clara County. A little past noon that day, 14 June.

That’s patriotic especially given US founding history. :+1:
Google Photos

Canada and Australia different origins.

The photo I posted today is mediocre, I think; I pulled over and parked as I was about to drive by, grabbed some snaps with my phone camera, did minimal tweaking in my ACDSee editing software, and put it up. But I decided it was worth posting because it demonstrates the quiet deeds not words sort of patriotism that still exists even when overshadowed by the blaring bluster. These are volunteers, veterans, who are building a walkway to the town’s memorial monument to those who’ve fallen in service.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

I will be out of town, and likely away from a computer, from Wednesday, 07/23/25 through Monday, 07/28/25.

The submission deadline is Saturday, July 26, so we will be a few days delayed in posting the July poll.

That is all the news for today.

mmm

Hey! Who authorized this?

@Crane did you take that photo?

Monthly Photo Competition #32 – July, 2025 – “Patriotism” - #13 by Crane

Yes with a mechanical timer and tripod. Does that count? Two previous photos I entered were taken the same way.

I think he’s more noticing the apparent age of the photo. Some of us have photo archives that don’t span quite so far back.

Thanks @chronos.

It was taken in 1954 at Lackland AFB. Before they had an Academy the USAF started an Aviation Cadet program. We were class 55 I, may have been the first one. Hard to realize that the USAF was only 7 years old in 1954.

There is a scatter of spots from age.
