SDMB Musical Lovers' Salon and Debating Society

Y’know, I have never seen Nashville so this should be interesting! See you on Nov 22!

Really? IIRC, I saw it at the Magic Lantern in IV when it came out…

Ha! Maybe I did. That was a great theater, but I was usually under the influence of certain herbs when I went there!

bump with a reminder that koeeoaddi will be kicking off the Nashville discussion this coming Monday. (I took it out of the library last night and should be watching it … hm, Amazing Race tonight, Regency House Party tomorrow, and The Apprentice Thursday … Friday or so. )

And Eonwe – a reminder that you’re up next for picking a film, if you’re still keeping an eye on things here.

Dang, and my other reason for posting was so I could subscribe to this thread, so I wouldn’t have to search for it every time. :smack:

Here’s the link to the Nashville discussion.

Eonwe are you ready to pick? Or do we want to pause in the roll call for a seasonally appropriate film or two? I was thinking today that I might not be the only person who’ll be watching Holiday Inn and White Christmas sometime within the next few weeks. Would anyone be interested in a discussion of one or both of those?

I’d be interested in a discussion of Holiday Inn or White Christmas, but . . . my access to the SDMB will be going on hiatus in about three weeks. Barring unforeseen circumstances it will resume in mid-January (and I may not be entirely cut off in between) but anyone counting on me contributing to a thread will be out of luck.

I’m usually an absolute Grinch when it comes to Christmas and the holiday season. But … maybe viewing and analyzing *White Christmas * or Holiday * Inn will bring me around! Eonwe, should we put your pick off until January and have a group consensus?

Well, I’ll take those two ambivalent votes (and no “nays”) as a resounding “huzzah” for my idea. And I’m going to do both movies, because the contrast on the two versions of “White Christmas” are pretty strking. Also, for those who haven’t memorized them – note the song “Father Abraham” in Holiday Inn – hard to miss the blackface, if you’re not watching a PC version where they cut out the number entirely. They use the song, sans lyrics, in White Christmas, in a dance number for Vera-Ellen and two chorus boys. I giggled with delight the first time I realized it was the same song.

Discussion to commence Monday, December 20th. Eureka – catch the thread when and if you can, and chime in likewise.

Happy Thanksgiving, all!

bump (because that’s the kind of shameless attention whore I am) – no, really, for anyone who missed the announcement over the holidays.

Should we let this puppy die, or are people still interested?

Haven’t seen eonwe in any of these threads recently – so if we’re going to resuscitate, we may end up skipping to TwoTrouts.

Well, I’ve got my movie already picked out…

Ooh! Where do I sign up?

You just did – all you have to do is post your interest. I’ll add you to the list the next time I update it. (If I forget, remind me).

Okay, so let’s see if eonwe or TwoTrouts shows up to announce a pic pick …

I’ll pick if eonwe is absent. Going from the sublime to the ridiculous, I choose the musical version of Little Shop of Horrors. If this choice is acceptable, I will post my synopsis and critique on Jan 22.

Hm, not quite sure what you’re calling “sublime”… – but think this is a very fun choice!

We’ve been giving people three weeks to find and watch the movie, so why don’t you shoot for 1/31 for your OP.

eonwe – if you’re around and interested in participating, check in here sometime in the next three weeks and we’ll give you the next choice; otherwise we’ll move on to DeVena. Or whoever is next who’s still interested.

White Christmas to Little Shop of Horrors? I think that qualifies as sublime to ridiculous! Jan 31st it is then for my synopsis and critique. I assume it is okay if, in my critique, I compare the film to the original stage production? Both fun, but different.

Sign me up for Brigadoon, s’il vous plait?

Ah, White Christmas – okay. I thought you were referring to Nashville, the last “official” choice, which, though a good movie, wasn’t IMHO a musical. (See that thread.) I haven’t seen it on stage, so I’d be interested in what you had to say about the differences between the two productions – some things work better on stage, and some things work better on screen.

Tracy – you don’t announce your pick until you’re up in the rotation. That way we make sure the person doing the picking is still active in the group and available to write an OP. If Brigadoon is still up (yikes! another Gene Kelly fan? what is with you people? :stuck_out_tongue: ) at that point, you are, of course, welcome to choose it.

Ah, psych! Just a little game I play, to see if y’all are paying attention. :smack:
