“And here our leader slights us. We are much more dangerous and much more skilled. Had the guards not come to help, there would have been no opportunity for an escape attempt. Perhaps you should look for Milanese agents a bit closer to home?”
Giacomo knows he’s on thin ice with the Doge, so he let’s the others talk it out, maintaining a cool demeanor.
While Zachary has been known to peddle a smooth line in patter to a beadle or magistrate, especially in matters concerning trading licences, a Doge is way above his social sphere, so he keeps firmly mum.
Similarly, Harald having certain Views when it comes to nobility and being aware that his tongue has a way of somehow galloping wild at times, will wisely let Joseph and the others do the talking. It’s all fine as long as Marco does the paying.
ETA : also, there’s free booze. That captures a man’s attention !
Joseph smiles at Marco, stepping so that he cuts off line of sight between the noble and Taye.
“Ah, my Lord, it is a harrowing tale. It started when we picked up their trail as they rode for Milan…”
Joseph relates the entire tale more or less truthfully, aside from the common embellishments which are required for any story, and without any mention of their own magical abilities.
Taye is a young, insecure hothead. A magic user raised to hate the church and authority. He hasn’t had any dealings with royals and being discourteous to them is just something he’d do. Thinking about consequences isn’t on his radar.
If I do anything seemingly dick-ish, remember, I’m just playing the character. And having a bit of fun.
No worries, mate.
"So both Marionis cast spells? Our information suggested that only Maria was a sorceress. Interesting.
“That more or less concludes our questions. Have you any questions before we turn to the compensation portion of this interview?”
“A sorcerer, or perhaps some sort of alchemist. Who knows with these deviants?”
Joseph turns to the rest of his companions, raising his eyebrows at Marco’s query.
“Err, yes yer lordshipness, question. Did the warlock that gave yer a lead on them two pipsqueaks sing some more while we were out and about, running errands ? Or have you otherwise figured out what the mess that brought us together was all about ?
I don’t know about them others, but I wouldn’t mind more easy money coming my way. It’s unsanitary work that does no good to nobody but… it could do, for a while at least.”
I would like to do a sense motive check on Marco.
I’ll do the same.
“May I ask, where will you take the Marionis’? For a city with a policy abjuring the Art, you seem to be collecting quite a few.”
“The contents of our interview with him will have to remain, for the moment, a state secret.”
He’s guarded in what he tells you and choosing his words very carefully but not lying, as far as you can tell. Unsurprising for the heir apparent to a successful state.
“They’ll be turned over to the religious authorities in accordance with the Church policy on the matter.”
“If you haven’t any more questions, then Alessio here will pay you and our work will be concluded. That said, your service has been quite helpful; I have another task for you starting tomorrow, if you’d like more work.”
Alessio hands Joseph another bag, this one somewhat lighter than the last. It contains 2800 gold pieces, and several gems that look valuable.
I do an appraise check on the gems.
Gems? What gems? This bag is full of laundry.
But seriously, Joseph wouldn’t open the bag in front of Marco.
Joseph nods politely to Marco.
“My associates and I will discuss that, my Lord, and will send a courier to the palazzo before the day’s end with our answer. In the meanwhile, we are somewhat travelworn and I think we would all benefit from a repast.”
You estimate that you could sell the rubies, emeralds, and one small diamond for about 2500 gold in a hurry, and perhaps 3500 if you take your time, shop around, and make sure to get the best of deals. That would take a few days of work, however.
Valente nods to Joseph. “Very well. I’ll expect you personally, not a courier, tomorrow before noon.”
Joseph bows, turns around so that his back is to Valente, hefts the bag, and grins broadly at his companions, winking as he makes to leave.
Harald grins in return and lifts up his glass of unspecified (albeit free gratis) vino. Then never lets his eyes leave Joseph’s hands until the loot is properly divvied up. Been burned quite a few times in the past by artful dodgers !
