D&D setup thread – game 2 (Mediaeval English background)

Since What Exit?’s game is running well, I thought I’d offer a second D&D game here.
(I have FluidDruid’s permission.)

The game play structure will be very similar to the 1st game (see setup and game threads).
I will only use thread posts, e-mail and PM’s. (I’m old! )

It will be a 1st edition D&D game, with the background of rural England. So elves, magic weapons and dragons will mingle with church spires, pubs and village greens… (but there will be no cricket! )
There will be as much roleplaying as combat. Player characters will have both weapon skills and non-weapon proficiencies. Character histories are going to be helpful.
There will be no dice (and no weapon v armour adjustment tables).
All monsters will come from the Monster Manual. The character races and classes will be largely based on the Players handbook, but with a couple of extra ones.

Players don’t need any experience. However those who know 1st edition D&D, Tolkien books and rural England will spot familiar references and can help newbies with suggestions and advice. This is a team effort!
The party will be based around Lawful and Good (i.e. no Evil or Chaotic Neutral characters).

I can handle 6-8 player characters.
Naturally What Exit?, as the first game’s DM has a reserved place. Posters who were reserves for the first game get in next, then newcomers. Current players are most welcome to fill any remaining places.

Here’s a summary of player races and characters. N.B. Not all combinations are possible. (Non-human characters can have two classes.)

**Do let me know if you want to play, and what sort of character you would like. **
Of course I’m happy to give advice and more details.
I recommend the party has at least 2 Warrior-types, 2 Healers, 1 Caster and one Scout, so you may wish to see what others want to play before making a final decision. However a ‘balanced’ party is not essential (provided you all have a sense of humour! )

Character Races:
Human (can be any class)
Dwarf (healthy but less charismatic; can be Warrior, Healer, Scout)
Elf (dextrous but less healthy; Warrior, Caster, Scout)
Gnome (Warrior, Caster, Scout)
Halfling (dextrous but less strong; Warrior, Healer, Scout)
Lizardman (can be Warrior and/or Scout)

Character Classes:
Warriors – Fighter, Paladin, Ranger, Ocean Barbarian, Warrior Monk
Caster – Magic User, Illusionist
Healer – Cleric, Druid
Scout – Thief

Characters will start with 10,002 experience points. Note that classes advance at different rates (generally Thieves are quickest, then Healers, Warriors and lastly Casters).
Characters will start with a magic item or two. These will all be based on spells in the game. There will be the usual (+1) weapons, armour, cloaks and rings as well as items like a Rod of Cure Light Wounds or a Wand of Ventriloquism.

Each class has its Guild, which arranges training (and spells for the Casters).

The party will be assembling in the charming rural town of Oakham in the County of Rutland. They have been asked to help Acolyte Crumlin of the Church of Heimdall…

Deal me in - I’ll decide the specifics later.

(Unless you get a crowd of applicants, of course, but after you’ve allowed for the first-reservists and new players, I’d like to be first in the queue.)

Do you expect the campaign to be mostly outdoors, indoors or a good mix?

Sounds nifty! I’d like to join in.

Since you mentioned First Edition, are you deliberately leaving assassins out of the class options?

You are hereby first in your ‘category’!

There’s a hint in your question, isn’t there?!

I don’t want to say too much, but the County of Rutland contains just a couple of towns and a few hamlets. So you can assume outdoors for the majority.
However every character class offered can make a good, interesting contribution.

P.S. Under the guidelines, you are my first official player.

Congratulations - you are in the party!

I did indeed leave out Assassins deliberately.
Like What Exit? I find it incredibly difficult to DM evil characters.

I’ve got your e-mail address, so I’ll send you details on character options soon.

I’d like to join in. I know next to nothing about First Edition rules, though I do know a fair bit about Tolkien.

You’re very welcome.

I stated 1st Edition so the regular players knew what I meant, but I intend to keep the rules knowledge to a minimum.
Once your character is completed, pretty much everything you ever need to know will be there.
You should be able to enjoy the adventure (and see what the other players bring to the party).

OK so far we have these players:

What Exit?
Paladud
Fluiddruid
Malacandra*

I will e-mail you all some files to get you started thinking about your characters. Please send a brief acknowledgement to make sure I’ve sent them correctly.

(I normally use Word 2007, but can easily attach things in Word 97-2003, which I think What Exit? prefers. Of course I can also put things in the body of the e-mail if our systems are really incompatible :smack: )

*As soon as I get 6 players, you’re in (unless there’s a sudden mob of requests filling all 8 spaces  )

Word 2007 has a patch program available for users of older Word to use. I use everything from 2000 to 2007 on the various machines I an on.

Here it is: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats

I purposely find it easier to save it as the older version to avoid issues for people. Most people can read the older Word Format, many cannot read the 2007 version.

Most kind.

I’ll send stuff to you in 2007 (saves me a little time*), but will happily use the older format if anyone asks.

  • recently I had a complete motherboard failure.
Fortunately all 700MB was backed up, but some of the files were in Claris Works (long story). It was by far the easiest to recreate them on Word 2007.

OK, for those who have signed up so far, I will send:

Character classes: describes the various permitted combinations of race and class, together with maximum level limits, experience points per level and a brief class description

Character Generation: how to achieve your character’s characteristics, with racial adjustments and class minimums

Character development: weapons skills, other skills and back story

Weapons and Armour: the small set I use in the adventure

As I said in the intro, roleplaying will feature as much as combat. Therefore a detailed character background will add possiblities.

You should discuss with other players about your class and skill set - it will benefit the party if you have a wide range of such abilities.

(I hasten to add that if you all want to be Gnome Illusionist / Scouts  , I can still run the adventure! Make sure you have a character that interests you.)

Oh, and if there are any spectators  , or people who want to compare notes, I am quite happy to send these files to you too.

Here are a couple of follow-up files for players. I will send them in both Word 2007 and Notepad.

(Apologies if Vista is causing some compatibility problems, but I do some work from home, so must use whatever system my employers buy…)

Character Additions: Some extra information on a few topics.

Non-weapon proficiencies: A list of skills the players can have. The previous sheet ‘Character development’ should explain how many skills you get.

Please feel free to ask me anything before you make a decision - this is not a ‘test’!
If you know what you want your character to be like (e.g, good at Archery, a skilled rider or able to bandage minor wounds), I can tell you how to achieve it.

I am having a great time in What Exit’s game. I would be happy to be considered as a backup player (I don’t think you will need me, but if you do I am here!)

Yes, that first game is great fun, which inspired me to try running this. Mind you, I have a high standard to live up to

Do keep your eye on this thread, because at present there is room for a couple more players.
You might even consider a potential character - would you like my files giving details?

So far the party (and likely characters) consists of:

What Exit? Druid (Human)
Paladud Paladin (Human)
Fluiddruid Fighter (Lizardman)
Malacandra Illusionist / Thief (Gnome)

Malacandra, you’re definitely in  - new players still have a couple of slots if they want to join.

I’ve already had a draft character from Malacandra and will reply in detail. I look forward to hearing from the others.
It will help your party if you spend a little time ensuring your characters have a balance of skills (e.g. what languages you speak).

Apologies, but I left a note off the Non-weapon proficiencies file. :o
Players, please cut and paste this (it refers to General Non-weapon proficiencies).

*these are related skills.
Alertness gives information on people behaving unusually nearby; for example spotting a potential pickpocket in a crowd.
Awareness is studying an area – to find a secret / concealed door, or to tell if your room has been searched while you were out.
Ambush runs automatically when you are ahead (or in the front line) of a moving party, and alerts you to ambushes.

Sure, send over the files and I will consider a character. It would be fun to play someone different than Gwaelur, so that is what I will be looking at, a non fighting character of some kind.

I would be interested in this if there are openings.

I’ll send you the files when I get home.

There’s certainly an party opening for a Cleric (to heal, protect and turn undead), for example…
