The game has some room and this is the ideal week for someone to join in the game.
The group could really use a front line fighter type but I am open to requests for anything but a thief class character. (We have 3)
If you’re interested post, PM or Email me. If you have questions post, PM or Email myself or the other players.
Please let me know how much of Middle Earth you know. (Book Knowledge, Movie knowledge or both)
If you know 1st edition rules.
Let me know what type of character you would like to play.
The world is pure Middle Earth and the D&D is modified 1st Edition. It is heavy on the role playing and the characters are heroes and not just adventures. So stats are high and magic items are somewhat common but not many are from the DMG.
Just for info, if anyone is thinking that you need large amounts of knowledge to play this game, the answer is: you don’t.
You can leave the 1st Ed D&D and the Middle Earth knowledge to the experts, (What Exit?, not me), it really isn’t that necessary, just join up and have some fun.
Another current player checking in; I’ve been having a blast, but a new player or two would be most welcome. Encyclopedic knowledge of Middle-earth is definitely not required.
From a playing point of view, I probably spend more than most on the game. But for starters, if you could spare 1/2 hour every couple of days to keep current with what is going on and chip in with any useful suggestions, comments & ideas, and what you would like your character to do, then it should be enough to get started.
Also, if you can give What Exit? an idea of how you would like your character to play, he can help keep moving things along, if you are not around.
I spend, on average, about an hour a day on the game. Usually spread out in 5-10 minute increments over the course of the day. Sometimes (like recently) I spend less time than that and am just fine. Sometimes more. I don’t think I ever spend more than about 30 minutes with the game at any one time, usually quite a bit less time than that. And I usually do fine if I can only check in once or twice every other day. I try not to go longer than that without at least reading what is going on though.
I usually check on the game thread a couple of times a day, but that’s because I’m a little OCD about it and not because it’s strictly necessary. In an average day, I spend maybe 15 minutes on the game, I’d say. I could do less, but that wouldn’t be as much fun.
I check on the game four or five times a day, but most of that isn’t necessary. I only post once a day, normally, though I may post four or five times in succession if something exciting is happening. Most of the time I check as a study break; I’m a college student and I spend a lot of time on my computer anyway writing and researching. And when I’m busy, I do disappear for as much as two days and I don’t think anyone has really noticed, so if you do get busy, don’t worry- it won’t bog us down.
If you play as a melee fighter of some sort, you’ll be at an advantage in terms of time required; mages and other spellcasters seem to take slightly more fussing, what with posting spells for the day. Elendil’s Heir spends more time than most but a lot of it is roleplaying and character development, which is fun but not strictly necessary if you’re crunched for time. And our party is heavy on spellcasters, archers, and rogues and short on melee fighters, so we’d especially welcome a melee type.
I’d consider playing, but I know very little about 1st ed AD&D. (I know a decent amount about Middle Earth, having read the LOTR trilogy, the Hobbit, and the Silmarillion. I also own the extended editions of the movies.)
I started D&D after college with 2nd edition. I’ve also played 3rd edition extensively. I know that 2nd edition removed a lot of the classes from 1st edition like monk, cavalier, and assassin. I know that 3rd edition brought many of them back greatly modified and sometimes available only as prestige classes.
So I’d probably need a primer on the various melee classes and what they can do.
The rules are simple enough. As I have weapon specializations, you’ll see some familiar stuff from 2nd Ed. The fighter types are basically Fighter, Ranger (tracking & herbal healing and later some spell use), Paladin (Holy LG Knights) and Warrior Cleric which is restricted to followers of Tulkas & Oromë and are pretty good fighters with plenty of spell casting ability but really need to concentrate on a single weapon to be effective. There are a variety of multi-class fighter types and bards.
For a straight melee fighters, Dwarves and Beorning are probably the best but each has disadvantages. Dwarves are noisy and a little slow and Beornings are typically shorter lived and both have lower charisma. Also Beorning armor could be harder to find.
Paladins favor the Rohirrim (of course) and then Hobbits, Dúnedain and Human.
Rangers favor Dúnedain by far but Silven Elves, Humans, Woses and Hobbits are reasonable possibilities.
From the Setup thread:
If you’re interested, read the first few posts in the setup threadand PM or Email about questions. You don’t need detail knowledge of the system unless you’re casting spells. Even there myself and Glee and some others will help out.
Cool. I’ll try to get around to reading that at some point. I’m a bit busy right now (still haven’t caught up from Thanksgiving on everything), but I’ll see what I can do within the next week or so.
Also, is there a Cliff’s notes version of the first four adventures? Sort of a “What the newbie needs to know to get up to speed?” I don’t really want to slog through dozens of hundreds of posts to understand what’s going on.
I tried to put together a summary but it took more time than I thought and it petered out. I might actually have the time next week to try again.
The first posts of each adventure will give some idea of the history, important people of the time and the NPCs. The bonus is that a lot of it is redundant from first post to first post so it allows for faster reading.
