SDMB Server Migration/Upgrade Plan

Running a vBulletin forum my self, I was going to ask if the site was ever going to be updated. The search feature restrictions now suck. The new version of vBulletin is awesome and I think it will be a welcome addition to this site I love so much.

Oh, one thing I recommend - keep the current smilies. The new ones are not that good.

I’ll pass that note on to Jerry in case he doesn’t see it here.

Thanks.

you’ll see what i mean

Yay! I’ve been lurking around, waiting to make sure this change was ever going to happen.
Same goes for me - I’ve been hanging around and reading the boards for awhile, just waiting for the free posting to finally start! I’m so glad to be here now.

Jerry - Thanks so much for all you’ve done and continue to do!

How were you able to nick Boo without getting some limps chopped off?

“Go for the eyes, Boo! Go for the eyes!”
1. I was 20 levels above him.
 2. Failing that, considering stealing Boo giveshim a +80Level Adjustment out of anger, I had a REALLY good cleric.
Well, you and I both know there’s a long history of the SDMB delivering exactly what they promise within three months of when they promised it, so I’m doubtful they’ll find anything.

Knew someone would be along with a bitch sooner or later.

Sorry, “Smashie” is not a vB smiley but is the property of somebody/something else. Not to be a naysayer but this is a board where we want you to use your words more than anything else.
Sorry, but the awesomeness of Smashie can’t be described with words.

That is all.

I found this on a quick Google, you can see Smashie and other departed smilies there.

Right on.

Thanks for the update, and even more thanks for turning off ALL the ads for subscribers  as long as my experience is unfettered by advertising, I will happily pay my membership fee

Ditto. I like this plan!

And thanks for giving up your weekend for the upgrade, Jerry! Hope things go as smoothly as possible.

Never said they were big. The nicest boobies are smallish.
Lots of big upgrades and boobies…
Upgrades, big upgrades, boobies don’t have to be big to be nice in fact I’ve never seen boobies that I didn’t like big or small. Now if you’d be kind enough to provide that cite that fachverwirrt requested and I seconded.

Really?

Have you read my words?

Sparse but relevant visual expression offers but a crutch, a fleeting repose upon which my weary neurotransmitters may pause to regather before plunging once more into the breach of my own ignorance. There but for the grace of God (and a little ECT) go I.

Has anyone given any thought to locking all the existing threads so that discussions aren’t interupted midstream?

Let us create new threads and play around during the upgrade, but it would suck if a decent profound discussion from earlier this week was lost.
Jerry, are there any plans at this time to add back in the older threads that you removed and archived when things wee the worst response-wise – even if only read-only? I know there are serious issues on both sides of that question, but they did contain a wealth of valuable content, presently inaccessible. The reason I’m asking now is that it makes sense to fold that into the database upgrade process if you plan to do it at any time in the near future.
Thirding the question.

I can’t speak for Jerry, but that’s really not possible in vBulletin without locking down an entire subforum, preventing posts as well. Besides, if all the threads are locked, when they’re unlocked how do you keep the threads that were once locked by the mods locked? There’s only one level of thread locking in vBulletin; not a “temporary lock” and “extra secure permanent lock”

We can lock threads one by one, but honestly I don’t think that’s practical. And it’s take some time, so we’d have to interrupt a lot of discussions starting about NOW.

Is it time yet? Is it?
