Not slow for me.
Perhaps those finding it too slow should move into a non-USA timezone ?
Actually scratch that, then it’d be faster while I’m asleep and slower when I’m awake, and I like it the other way around
Arrogant darned Aussies! Let’s raise thier rent!
alice, the client computer, or its pipe, has just north of fuck-all to do with the response of this Board.
Optimistically, I must ask you your general RL location. Geography may have something to do with your positive results throughout your tenure with this churning database of 80-page OMFG! threads.
Again, I’m in the same position as Alice. I rarely have any frustration with the speed of the boards. Occasionnally…but not to such an extent that I’m pissed off about it.
Location: Virginia, USA.
Very curious.
Jonathan, alice, were you folks online during the database errors early Saturday and again in the afternoon? Approximately 1.5 hours each, from 01:15 to 02:48 Saturday (PST) and again from 12:00-13:38 Saturday (PST). From that point forward, the Boards were running uniformly slowly.
It was so frustrating, I was almost to the point of retracting my “happy post” from the 14th.
I’m in Calgary, AB.
I wasn’t online this weekend at all. (I was out and about.)
The only noticeable slowdown that I ever noticed was when that one thread got picked up by that fan-fiction site. It was something like if William Shatner wrote Lord of the Rings or something. I noticed things were a bit slow then.
However, typically I have no problem whatsoever. I mean, come on people - the bulk of my posts are links to bunny poking sites and nude fests. Do you really think I would be waiting hours to post that stuff? (Well, maybe some people do. I don’t).
Finally, regarding broadband. I work at a University. I don’t know what their specific system specifications are, but it’s PDQ.
That’s it. That’s all. Now, just to prove me wrong, this post will take 27 minutes to go up.
Mr. B, I was trying to access SDMB early Saturday afternoon this past weekend. For a little while I got some message about the boards having a problem and to try again later, etc, etc. Any idea what had happened? I’m just wondering out of curiosity.
** Jonathan Chance**, cool! Another poster from Virginia
Humm. Nope.
What’s PDQ? An ISP? A web search shows a lot of boating links, a couple U.S. ISPs, and various companies representing different industries in the U.S. and Canada.
Well, anyway, if you’re at a university, you probably have a T1 or a T3. Very fast, indeed.
But, as explained, the problem here is one of a gigantic database on a SDMB server that’s just not powerful enough to run as many queries as we’re throwing at it without seriously slowing down.
That’s why I find it so strange that you and Jonathan don’t have problems, since it’s well-established by the administration that there are problems on the server end.
Naw, I have broadband (at work) and it regularly fails to connect there.
I think Alice is just having some freaking issues admitting she was mistaken in her rather snotty suggestion that the only people that have problems are those with shitty equipment and that ponying up the cash to upgrade will solve everyone’s problems.
We have ADSL / broadband connection at work
Dial up connection at home
T3 at uni (Mmmmmm T3 Heaven!)
SDMB runs at the same speed on all of them. Sometimes it is slow, sometimes it is fast. Type of connection as stated before has nothing to do with the speed.
Most noticable is the difference in speed when the 'mericans go to bed. So location does play a big part.
Perhaps that can be the Australian Tourism Bureau’s next marketing strategy - Dope Faster Down Under!
Hey lezlers, good freaking point! My 3.2 Pentawhatzit with a Gigaplotz of Magic Beans is smarting with indignation.
Dammit!
“Pretty Damn Quick”?
What’s an ISP?
Am I being wooshed?

I should have trusted my instincts but the desire to prove my knowledge was too strong.
<snort>
Uh, no. It’s “Pretty Darn Quick.” :)
Actually, I wasn’t particularly snotty at all - I just suggested that my access to a Very Fast System[sup]TM[/sup] could contribute to my lack of problems.
But way to slag me off at the drop of a hat. Me thinks that you have some inadequacy issues that in no way relate to your computer…
Get help. Really.
