Off Topic has way more people than SD, and their pages load very fast.
Why is that?
They have more bandwidth and CPU, of course.
I love the boards, and that’s why I’m still here. However, it’s gotten to the point where I can hardly use them.
Example: I need some information I am not able to find anywhere else on line. I know I will get that information if I post a thread asking for it. However, I know that threads have been posted on the topic before, and I’d like to read those. Possibly I won’t need to post my thread after reading the old ones, possibly I will. I have been running the same search for almost a week now and I still haven’t actually seen the search results.
To me, that just means the boards are slow enough to be effectively unusable in that context.

Well excuse me. I took your mulitple posts repeating that you don’t have any problems and describing your fabulous system, even after many posters explained why #1. the server speed has nothing to do with the equipment you have and #2. the administration has admitted the server is slow, as not a suggestion, but as a fact. As in, your initial post that the people offering to throw at the server should instead throw at thier equipment was still correct. Obviously, it’s not.
As for the rest of your post, I assure you I have no inadequacy issues, I just think you’re an unbearable priss.

I never described my “fabulous system”. I said I have DSL and broadband. For all you know from my posts in this thread, I could have a Vic 20. I have never stated or implied otherwise.

Other people do see extreme variability in posting speeds. Sometimes it’s because they just happen to be on at certain times when demand drops off, and other times it is a mystery. As I’ve mentioned again and again, I’m not sure that it’s bandwidth-related, because the SDMB can be locked up hard yet the ping times to the server are typically very fast - at least as fast as anywhere else. Rarely, the entire TCP/IP stack is locked, and the pings go off to la-la land…
One thing that might be happening is you might have a huge caching proxy between you and the SDMB, or alternately your browser cache settings may be set to keep most of the pages and threads without forcing the dynamic refresh. This happens sometimes even when it’s not supposed to - when I go through one proxy, the SDMB is often lightning-fast, but I notice that the forum view pages aren’t really updating, and I often have to hit “CTRL-Refresh” to get the latest view.
I any event, I thought your point was valid. Some people have an amazing ability to have unintentional double and treble posts, and others do not - even though both people will claim they are only hitting “Submit” once. The truth is, when the server and system get this badly loaded, expect irrational behaviour (I won’t say “chaotic”, because that would make me sound too much like that twerp Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park…and besides, the Velocimods haven’t escaped the pen yet, nor has the Lynn-Rex…)
hell it only took me 25 minutes to load up one thread today, down right smokin for the sdmb.
yeah I havent been posting or reading here as much as I used to, I feel like I am on a 2400 modem trying to load flash or something. I hate surfing 10 pages on another MB while looking back and forth while the sdmb is STILL loading.

I was looking for a patch or a cheat to get over a glitch in a pc game and I came across a forum with players and mods for the game. Great! I thought, but I couldn’t wade through all the crap to get to the information I needed, and I think it was in there among all the OtThEr InFOrMAttioNN.
