SDMB top 100 all-time fave pop/rock songs

I want it noted for the record that I shall abstain from participating until the OP changes the number of picks from 10 to 100. The header was pure trickery and should be reported to the proper authorities.

P.S.: I agree with imthjckaz: Cool picks Zoggie!

You said:

I agree. ‘The End’ is one of the most under-appreciated - if a tad on the short side - Beatles’ songs;) (and, some would say, the most fitting…)

Wait, omni…Beatles songs?

I’m talking about The Doors’ song, “The End”…not exactly on the short side…

Anyway thanks, I pride myself on having non-cutesy pop teenybopper esque music taste.

…my previuos post, and yes, the recount does say, Doors, by a landslide.

I had to do a double check because sometimes my brain and my fingers are not working together, you know what I mean, I’m thinking MaryAnn, but my fingers write Ginger, kind of goofy, eh.

Shortside? The End goes 10+ minutes.

Zoggie, your last two songs are good songs, but just not my cup o tea.

Some people ying while others yang, thats what makes the world go around.

And I don’t have a cutesy pop teenybopper music taste either. Too much sugar.

Cool.

OK, probably not a chance in hell any of these are gonna make the finals, but here goes:

  1. Husker Du - Celebrated Summer
  2. The Replacements - Unsatisfied
  3. The Beatles - In My Life
  4. Otis Redding - Try A Little Tenderness
  5. The Clash - White Man In Hammersmith Palais
  6. The Divine Comedy - The Pop Singer’s Fear of the Pollen Count
  7. The Pogues - The Old Main Drag
  8. R.E.M. - Sitting Still
  9. Etta James - At Last
  10. The Monkees - Goin’ Down

I’ll throw in honorable mention to “Senses Working Overtime” by XTC, which has already been mentioned.

I’ll also give my blessing to “September Gurls” by Big Star which has been mentioned a couple times. No, this is not cheating.

Out of curiosity, Dragon, what’s the deadline on this? You might want to mention that before you start the count.

Oh, right, the list. Here goes…

  1. All Along The Watchtower-Jimi Hendrix
  2. Big Empty-Stone Temple Pilots
  3. Evenflow-Pearl Jam
  4. Welcome To The Jungle-Guns N Roses
  5. Fortunate Son-Creedence Clearwater Revival
  6. Runnin’ With The Devil-Van Halen
  7. Man In The Box-Alice In Chains
  8. Sanitarium-Metallica
  9. Hey Jude-The Beatles
  10. Epic-Faith No More

Imthjckaz- Well that’s good then…still feel bad about not putting Pink Floyd on…SIGH. And there’s a really good Billy Idol song on the radio now…plus I sort of forgot Janis Joplin…it’s just I had to prioritize…basically meant putting on the songs I had actually listened to quite recently or just really knew I loved. Ten’s not enough, damnit!
Oh yes, another vote for Welcome to the Jungle.

  1. Helter Skelter - The Beatles (the Siouxsie and the Banshees cover of this song is amazing!)

  2. Bodies - The Sex Pistols

  3. Rock Lobster - The B-52s.

  4. Stealing People’s Mail - The Dead Kennedy’s

  5. We’ve Got the Beat - The Go-Gos

  6. Blister in the Sun - The Violent Femmes

  7. Let’s Go Crazy (movie intro version) - Prince and the Revolution

  8. Paint it Black - The Rolling Stones

  9. She Bop - Cyndi Lauper

  10. Jig of Life - Kate Bush (and if you’ve actually heard of Kate, I’d love to meet you!)

Shaking My Booty,
Patty

I’ve just read other people’s lists and am especially interested in those that include XTC, Husker Du and The Goddess Herself Kate Bush…

Did I mention I have my own college radio show called “The Spandex Years?” Look here ( http://www.geocities.com/spandex_years ) for more info. Did I mention I’m doing a Husker Du special Wednesday, May 2nd that you can listen to over the net by going to http://radio.cwru.edu and checking out the archive? Did I mention I’ve done specials (which I’ve airchecked) of XTC, Kate Bush, Mojo Nixon and others?

If any of this sounds interesting to any of you, drop me a line at p_marvel@yahoo.com .

Patty

Deadline is end May or when this thread drops to page four, whichever is earlier…

You shoudda paid attention to the wink… I was talking about the second to last song on ‘Abbey Road’. All 2 minutes and three seconds of it, with a 1:32 ‘intro’ (beginning with ‘Oh yeah, alright. Are you going to be in my dreams tonight?’, followed by the solos and concluding with ‘And, in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make’ (0:31)).

And ‘fitting’ because, aside from the ‘Her Majesty’ dittie, it could be considered as the last song on the last Beatles album ever recorded.

Stay tuned…

This doesn’t look like it’s going to compile very well, I see very few songs getting mentioned more than once. Anyway, I’ll kick in with my favorites:

  1. More Than a Feeling - Boston
  2. Promises in the Dark - Pat Benatar
  3. Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac
  4. In the Dark - Billy Squier
  5. Valarie - Steve Winwood
  6. Foreplay / Longtime - Boston
  7. Won’t get Fooled Again - The Who
  8. Plush - Stone Temple Pilots
  9. Smooth - Santanna
  10. Dreams - Van Halen

well, it’ll be something like;

  1. everlast - what its like
  2. cypress hill - dust
  3. korn - freak on a leash
  4. rage against the machine - killing in the name
  5. jimi hendrix - voodoo child (slight return)
  6. sunna - power struggle
  7. velvet underground - pale blue eyes
  8. beastie boys - shes on it
  9. the beta band - round the bend
  10. (hed)p.e. - the meadow

Yes, let’s see how it develops over the coming weeks (always the optimist). I did expect more votes for established classics like Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc.

I never travel far
Without a little
Big Star.

– from “Alex Chilton,” The Replacements

Ten is a gyp. I love music.

  1. Empty Spaces/What Shall We do Now? From Pink Floyd, The Wall Live 1981-82. I think if two songs are typically played as a meddly, they should count as one.

  2. Kashmir, Led Zepplin. I can’t believe I haven’t seen this one on here yet.

  3. Won’t Get Fooled Again, The Who. A true classic

  4. Jump, Van Halen

  5. You Shook Me All Night Long, AC/DC

  6. Spirit of the Radio, Rush

  7. Heartbreaker, Led Zepplin. Contains one of the best guitar solos ever.

  8. You Can’t Always Get What You Want, The Rolling Stones

  9. Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Meat Loaf

  10. Freebird, Lynard Skynard

I’m a sucker for the old stuff as you can see.

Man, it took a long time to come up with this.

  1. “Nautical Disaster,” The Tragically Hip

  2. “Monty Got a Raw Deal,” R.E.M.

  3. “Low,” Cracker

  4. “Gimme Shelter,” The Rolling Stones

  5. “What Is Love,” Haddaway

  6. “Every Breath You Take,” The Police

  7. “Boys of Summer,” Don Henley

  8. “What I Like About You,” The Romantics

  9. “New Orleans is Sinking,” The Tragically Hip

  10. “In Your Eyes,” Peter Gabriel

Very difficult, indeed. My list in no particular order:

  1. Tie Your Mother Down - Queen
  2. Down By The Seaside - Led Zeppelin
  3. Heroes - David Bowie
  4. Box of Rain - Grateful Dead
  5. Its Only Rock and Roll - Rolling Stones
  6. Loan Me A Dime - Boz Scaggs
  7. A Day In The Life - The Beatles
  8. Highway 61 - Bob Dylan
  9. What’s Goin’ On? - Marvin Gaye
  10. Runaway - Del Shannon

No the. Just Spirit of Radio.

You understand it is my moral duty to correct errors like that, right?

(Good list, BTW!)

  1. REM “Losing My Religion”
  2. The Smiths “Bigmouth Strikes Again”
  3. U2 “The Sweetest Thing”
  4. Ani DiFranco “Not a Pretty Girl”
  5. Nirvana “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
  6. The La’s “There She Goes”
  7. Velvet Underground “Venus in Furs”
  8. Morphine “Honey White”
  9. Chris Isaak “Wicked Game”
  10. The Police “Message in a Bottle”

These aren’t necessarily all of my personal favorites-I listen to REM’s “Try Not to Breathe” more often than “Losing my Religion,” but I don’t know how many people are familiar with it.
