This was next to impossible.

The above are some of the songs I’ve currently been playing to death.

In no particular order (and with a wish that the list could be three times as long):

Taillights Fade…Buffalo Tom
Somethin’Hot…Afghan Whigs
St Swithin’s Day…Billy Bragg
My Old School…Steely Dan
Love My Way…Psychedelic Furs
Rock N’ Roll… Led Zeppelin
For a Dancer…Jackson Browne
Ambulance Blues…Neil Young
Thunder Road…Bruce Springsteen
Every Me and Every You…Placebo

You DO continue to amaze me, G. Nome. That would have been my number 11. Me and my friends always play it on December 31, 23:55. And one of my best friends wants it as his funeral song. I agree with him.

Good choice.

Great thread Dragon. I have to echo those who said 10 picks aren’t enough, but these would be in my top 100.

Johnny Clegg and Savuka"Dela"
Talking Heads “Take Me to the River”
Peter Gabrial “In Your Eyes”
The Who “Who Are You?”
Kate Bush “Hounds of Love”
Paul Simon “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes”
Harry Chapin “A Better Place to Be”
Stevie Nicks “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around”
Fleetwood Mac “Rhiannon”
Stevie Ray Vaughn “Love Struck Baby”

  1. Freebird : Lynyrd Skynrd
  2. Satisfaction : Rolling Stones
  3. The Wall : Pink Floyd
  4. Bohemian Rhapsody : Queen
  5. Higher Love : Steve Winwood
  6. Statesboro’ Blues : The Allman Bros
  7. That Smell : Lynyrd Skynrd
  8. All along the watchtower : Jimi Hendrix
  9. Layla : Derek and the Dominoes
  10. Do you feel : The ever unpopular Peter Frampton

Why, thank you. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to find a place for any of your top ten choices if my list was 100 songs long. Taillights Fade, though, has an almost mystical quality about it. It always stays new no matter how many times you play it. I’m fascinated by what makes music appeal to people. Is it a match of brain waves and sound waves for instance? Maybe it’s better to leave that kind of analysis alone though. It’s just too reductionist. The thought that someone could manufacture hits based on brain scans is too future noir for me.

P.S. Led Zeppelin will win.

  1. Estranged by Guns N Roses
  2. Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
  3. Living Type by Powderfinger
  4. A Small Victory by Faith No More
  5. Everlong by Foo Fighters
  6. You Sound Like Louis Burdett - The Whitlams
  7. If You Could Only See - Tonic
  8. Corduroy - Pearl Jam
  9. Karma Police - Radiohead
  10. Interstate Love Song - Stone Temple Pilots

10? This sucks! I could go on… and on… and on!

Why not go on? Who’s it going to hurt? It’s not like this thread will become never-ending - posting seems just about to have slowed to a stop. I must say that I enjoyed reading everybody’s selections. This is my alternative top ten:

Gloria…U2
Around Here…Counting Crowes
57th Street Serenade…Bruce Springsteen
I’m Still Alive…Pearl Jam
Venus…The Feelers
Could It Be Magic…Barry Manilow
Oh My Sweet Carolina…Ryan Adams
Rock the Casbah…The Clash
Tunnel of Love…Dire Straits
Let Down…RadioHead

  1. Purple Haze- Jimi Hendrix
  2. Kingsmith- Louie, Louie
  3. Queen Bohemian Rhapsody
  4. Kansas- Carry On
  5. Led Zepplin- Stairway to Heaven
  6. Radiohead- Paranoid Android
  7. Jamiroquai- Virtual Insanity
  8. Ben Folds Five- Song for the Dumped
  9. Third Eye Blind- Slow motion- instrumental version (I know nobody’s heard of it, but I whole heartedly recommend it)
  10. Mighty Mighty Bosstones- The Impression that I Get
(Just for good measure: 11. Incubus Drive
  11. Eric Clapton- Layla (not the unplugged version))
I know I am probably forgetting something.

Man! I didn’t know we had the real Xerxes in our midst. This is a classy MB…

I think you were thinking of the Kingsmen. Yep. A classic in its own right.
