SDMB Transitioning To New Host

Good luck guys…and thanks for keeping us online so well…our smartass selves really do appreciate you!

In fact, Jerry Davis , this thread made me think of a t-shirt you should have. My daughter’s HS was the performing arts magnet in out city and also had a great Tech department. As I remember all the drama kids were rather jealous of the Tech support t-shirts which they wore “behind the scenes”…all black (of course) with the following sentiment:

No Techie, No Showie

Different kind of techie and different kind of showie for sure but I for one think you should get some shirts out of this effort…not to mention putting up with us

How about it, Cecil?

You should ask your doctor about a little blue pill…

I’d take the red pill myself.

Well, it’s back up. It does indeed seem slow, but I’m willing to put up with some short-term discomfort for long-term benefits. I’m going to love not having the maintenance downtime each night, even though I’m only awake then once in a while.

The only major thing when getting back on was that I had to log in again. No big surprise–the cookie surely referred to the old host.

I also noted during the load of the MB main page, each forum had “(## viewing)” next to it, with a number where the #s are. They weren’t there once all the graphics and formatting resolved. That isn’t quite normal, is it? It’ll go away soon, I"m sure.

Whoa! The server clock is off. This and the last post I made were both submitted around or before 10am Pacific.

The clock is acting all screwy for me! I just posted to a thread at about 9:53 am and the hamsters put it in the middle of the thread with a time of 5:53 am!!! I have officially traveled through time on the SDMB! Are these weird time errors going to be fixed or is my post going to remain where it is?

We’re up and running on the new server. We’ve requested that boards.straightdope.com have it’s IP number changed from the old server’s IP to the new server’s IP. Those still coming to the old server will be redirected to the new server or the old server will access the database on the new server. I expect within a few days everybody will be on the new server by default. At that time we’ll assess the performance of the new server.

We had some problems with the system clocks so posts for the first hour or so after we came back up are probably time stamped incorrectly. We believe that has been corrected now so new posts should be appended to the end of threads.

So all in all things went relatively smoothly. Let’s see how things stand at the end of the week.

Jerry

Oddness here: I see the IP address (207.97.195.229) instead of the domain name (boards.straightdope.com), even though my bookmark is most assuredly for the more human-friendly of the two. I suppose the redirection has something to do with this, and the persistence of the IP address implies the new DNS rules have not reached my ISP’s notice.

(Hell, don’t ask me. I’m a code monkey, not a network guy.)

(BTW, unless whois and traceroute are lying to me, our new IP address places us in Rackspace country. Just what we need… fanatical hamsters. ;))

So, why are you changing hosts, especially considering you can’t even ensure faster board performance? I’d think that would be a big reason to switch, but you’re saying there are no guarantees.

Esprix

So far, so good!

Where do we send the chocolates and beer?

The board is running faster than I’ve ever seen it,and has been(for me anyway) before the PST downtime from 1:30 to 2:30 AM, which now is a thing of the past.(Giggle) Years from now young dopers will roll their eyes and say,“Sure, gramps” when we ancient ones bring up the missing hour.Every day!

I knew it. Having said that, it immediately went from blazing fast to slow. I did it.I jinxed it.I should be banned. Not just from the SDMB,but the whole internet.
Wait a minute. Now it seems to be back to fast again.I’m getting out of this thread while I’m repreived.

The Straight Dope took a disproportionate share of the bandwidth of the in-house server, so much so that it was difficult to run the Reader’s other websites or for Reader staff to get online. By farming the SD out, this gives them more capacity to handle the rest of their business.

If we’ve learned anything about what goes on around here, it’s that we can guarantee little or nothing where performance is concerned. We hope performance will be better, but there’s many factors involved that we have no control over. Raising expectations is only guaranteed to make everyone unhappy. It’s “hope for the best – expect the worst.” What happens will be somewhere between.

You also have to factor in demand; every time we have been in a position to increase capacity, user demand has risen to not only meet capacity but exceed it, sometimes within a few days, so to the user there’s no appreciable difference in quality. Not much we can do about that either.

That’s a good question. I owe Lynn a box of chocolates but I don’t know where to send it. As far as the beer is concerned… I think it’s illegal to send alcohol through the mail. I’ll have to keep that for myself.
I like that we don’t have to shut down for an hour anymore. Kinda reminded me of a New Orleans bar there for awhile.

You’re not supposed to pour it in the glass first, numbdope.

numbdope? how’d I earn that?

How about a box of chocolates that has the booze inside the candy? Reckon where I could find some of those.
Hey Lynn would those work?

numbdope…indeed

pot/kettle/black

It takes me more than five minutes to open a thread now during the day. Same for searching new posts, etc.

Hope that’s just temporary.

You know, I had this one hour between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM where I actually got some work done, and now you’ve taken it away from me. You bastards.
