SDMB/Unaboard Fantasy Baseball Leagues

I know there are quite a few Board members involved in fantasy baseball this season because I’m in 3 leagues connected to the SDMB. And others in my leagues are in leagues that I’m not in. So, I thought it might be fun to keep track of each league’s standings on a weekly basis.

I’ll post the standings as of this morning of the leagues I’m in. Hopefully others will do the same.

erislover, Fatwater Fewl, and White Lightning respectively lead those leagues.

I don’t know everyone involved – hopefully people will come in and tell us which team is theirs.

I will be back later tonight to discuss the format of each league, roster sizes, stats counted, etc. I also hope to do some team by team analysis.

Oh man, I wasn’t watching who was at the top in the Melting Pot (just trying to stay afloat myself). Where did erl come from?

And my lead in SDMB_1 is slipping. Sometime last week I had something like 124 to 105, I wanted to take a screenshot and immortalize what I’m sure will remain my best position in that league.
I’ve been wanting to join a good keeper league for soooo long. If you guys ever get an opening in that one (which I didn’t even know existed), can I get dibs on the spot?

Well, as should be fairly obvious, my team is Zev’s Wolves.

In addition, I also run an OOTP league at this site, where in it’s initial season, the Brooklyn Wolves came in last place in the Adams division.

Zev Steinhardt

As per our constitution, if there’s an opening, you’ll see an MPSIMS thread announcing it (ignore the comments in red on that page).

Zev Steinhardt

All of the leagues I’m involved in are run through Yahoo’s Fantasy Baseball service.

The Melting Pot League is an AL only league. Having only nine teams would make this league appear shallow (meaning a larger free agent pool). However, when we realized that we were not going to find any more members, Winnowill offset the small number of teams by increasing the roster size. We can carry up to 24 players per team, plus two DL spots for injured players.

Offensively, the daily starting positions are:
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util (DH).
The maximums for games played at each position in this league are set at 160.

The pitching slots are:
SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P.
The innings cap is set at 1400.

The league is basically rotisserie with a few tweaks. The offensive categories are:
Runs
Doubles
Home Runs
Runs Batted In
Stolen Bases
Batting Average
On-base Percentage

Pitching categories:
Wins
Saves
Strikeouts
Earned Run Average
(Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched
Strikeouts per Walk Ratio

As you can see, this works out to 7 x 6, which is slightly unbalanced, but I think it’s a good approximation of the relative emphasis placed on offence and defence in baseball today.

The typical roto league is 5 x 5. I like the additions of doubles, OBP and K/BB. It made for an interesting draft, especially offensively, as BA and OBP are not closely tied (to my mind, OBP is a truer indicator of a player’s ability), and players noted for SB’s often will not help in any other category except runs. I’m finding that in a league of this type a manager must keep a very close eye on each player and category and adjust his lineup daily according to the standings and hot or cold streaks by players. The winner of this league will be the manager who stands up best to the rigours of 6 months of daily team maintenance.

As far as pitching goes, I also like the addition of K/BB, as I believe that it and WHIP are the best indicators of a pitcher’s ability. So, by drafting, trading, or scouring the free agent wire for pitchers who are strong in those categories, a manager can be comfortable allowing the other categories to take care of themselves. Also, in any league, an awareness of the strength and weaknesses of the offence and remaining pitching staff of the pitcher’s real team is recommended, as those things have a strong effect on the number of wins and saves a pitcher may attain.

Out of nowhere, as he often does.

I’m hoping that my current position in that league (Rickey’s Residue) will be my worst.

If it were up to me, yep. 'Cause from what I’ve seen, you’re in for the long haul. And a keeper league is a looooong haul.
Zev said:

And I’m expecting to feel them snapping at my heels by midseason.

Zev got me into this game. He started the league I first joined which has now become a keeper league. So, in a sense, this thread is his fault. I think of him as my crack dealer … in the offseason, as winter lengthens, I get the jitters and start checking my email every day for my fix, some sort of league announcement from Zev.:stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, it’s become an obsession.

I am the Stockholm Sluggers in the SDMB Keeper league, as well as Zev’s OOTP league. Currently in 2nd place in the former, and I lost the inaugural Cecil Cup to a non Doper. I’m so ashamed of that.

I am the Saskodies in the Melting Pot league, it has been my first experience with this and I know know what I will do differently next time…Keith

I’m the Shelbyville Shelbyvillians in the SDMB_1 league. And I’m looking for a CF. Clayton, Williams, Martinez and Urbina can all be packaged in some way for the right guy.

I’m Winnowill’s Winners in both SDMB_1 and the Melting Pot. They’re both a lot of fun in very different ways. SDMB_1 is a larger league, with more active players (which I like, and will probably do next year). The Melting Pot is smaller and has an VERY small residual talent pool. It’s very unlikely that any gem of a player will last long. But the scores in that league are really tight - from first to seventh place is a difference of only 14 points.

I’m interested in keeper leagues, too.

Well I would be the Rocky Peaks of the Keeper league. Hoping to challenge for first assuming certain players(looking in your direction Randy Johnson and Isringhousen) get heathy, and just looking at my team I notice that every outfielder I have is now day to day or DL, except Shawn Green who isn’t doing much.

I am Les Miserables in the SDMB keeper league. 6th place, just where I finished last year. Maybe I should change my name to Les Mediocrities. But, then again, I’ve picked up about 15 points in the last week and can see 4th place from here.

I need a hitter who scores runs, hits HR’s, and steals bases, all in large numbers. Oh, wait. That’s Vlad Guerrero, and I have him already. Any others out there?

I’m the Portland Expos in Winnowill’s Winners. I’d just like to say that I was in second last week, and then something happened and now I’m 8th…

sigh Just like when I play Fantasy Football…

SDMB Keeper League draws players from both major leagues. We have a 22 player roster with two DL spots. I would classify this league as shallow, meaning that when the rosters are full significant free agent talent remains on the wire. This means that a team beset by an injury bug, as wolfman appears to be, should be able to find suitable stopgap replacements on the wire.

Daily starting positions are:
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util.
Daily pitching slots are:
SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P.

Scoring is typical 5 x 5 roto.

Offence:
Runs
Home Runs
Runs Batted In
Stolen Bases
Batting Average

Pitching:
Wins
Saves
Strikeouts
Earned Run Average
(Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched

This league is fairly competitve. I don’t expect to remain on top for the whole season. In fact, coming into this year, I thought my team had some glaring weak spots.

Our constitution, which Zev linked to above, allows each team to reserve up to 5 players from season to season for a maximum of three years including the year a player was drafted, regardless of whether the player was traded during that time. I think this clause forces some interesting roster decisions.

I think the league would be made even more competitive if it’s size were increased to 14 teams. I’ve been considering proposing a constitutional amendment to that effect for next season. My only hesitation is whether a larger league would make Zev’s job as commissioner any more difficult. He does a wonderful job, and I’d hate to overload him.

I have a few interesting players. And I do enjoy trading.
I’ll try to lay out the SDMB_1 League’s format – it’s quirkily different – late tonight. And, perhaps, begin an analysis of teams from each league.

I’ve got one for you (Torii Hunter). I’m intrigued at the idea of getting a closer for him. Not interested in Clayton, not sure about E-Mart. Why don’t you shoot me an offer or two?

Just a quick note for the moment to identify myself as Out on Waveland in the SDMB_1 league. Its been fun so far and has much better participation than the SDMB league I was in 2 seasons ago.

I’ve been shaking up my roster alot lately, and I really like my offensive squad. If Sammy gets healthy and starts his usual mid-summer tear I’ll be on top of all the big offensive categories, only excepting SB. How about that outfield, huh? A. Jones, Patterson, Sosa, Gonzo, and Drew…should be sizzling by mid-summer.

Here’s the stats as they stand in SDMB_1.

Crap, sorry about the screen, it worked on preview…

I will not admit to being Deb’s Halos in the SDMB_1 league. Pitchers that in the past pitched well but are stinking this year can ruin ones stats. I need to kick my players in butt.

I am Rally Monkey in the Melting Pot league. And we ain’t doin’ so bad. I am dead last in the saves category and only have about 2 this year by fluke. I have conceded this category and don’t plan to upgrade, but my pitching is decent and my hitters are HOT. So hot that I have to hose them down frequently which we all like. wet t-shirt time and yes we have fun mmm men with great pecs and butts in wet cough sorry I have to wipe the drool off now.

Thanks to all who’ve replied to my request for help to identify the managers in each league. With your help, and me briefly getting past my innate laziness to do a little searching, we’ve managed to match most of the teams up with usernames.

In other news, WL and I are tied for the title of biggest baseball roto geek with three* SDMB teams each, followed closely by Winnowill, deb2world and Weirddave at two apiece.
