I’m going to try and analyse at least 3 teams a day.
1. WL’s Theocracy
Offence:
C Hall, Toby (C-TB)
1B Huff, Aubrey (DH, 1B, RF-TB)
2B Walker, Todd (2B-Bos)
3B Chavez, Eric (3B-Oak)
SS Garciaparra, Nomar (SS-Bos)
OF Wells, Vernon (CF-Tor)
OF Byrnes, Eric (LF, RF-Oak)
OF Nixon, Trot (RF-Bos)
Util Mueller, Bill (3B-Bos)
Bench Singleton, Chris (CF-Oak)
Bench Hatteberg, Scott (1B, DH-Oak)
Bench Bigbie, Larry (LF-Bal)
DL Dye, JermaineDL (RF, DH-Oak)
Pitching:
SP Baez, Danys (SP, RP-Cle)
SP Hudson, Tim (SP-Oak)
SP Santana, Johan (SP, RP-Min)
RP MacDougal, Mike (RP-KC)
RP German, Franklyn (RP-Det)
P Embree, Alan (RP-Bos)
P Mendoza, Ramiro (RP-Bos)
P Wunsch, Kelly (RP-CWS)
Fossum, Casey (RP, SP-Bos)
Loaiza, Esteban (SP-CWS)
Cornejo, Nate (SP-Det)
Anderson, Brian (SP, RP-Cle)
DL Lopez, RodrigoDL (SP, RP-Bal)
This team has been carried to first place by the bats of Huff, Chavez, Garciparra and Wells. And by the ungodly April of a starter named Esteban Loaiza and a closer named Mike MacDougal.
WL’s offence probably will not slow down much. Chavez, for instance, should only get better. His pitching, however, could go to hell in a hurry. Hudson will remain strong, Fossum will only get stronger – as will Santana if the Twins ever let him out of the pen and put him in the rotation where he belongs. But Loaiza and MacDougal have each already put in the best month of their season.
WL will have to pull off a trade of hitting for pitching to keep this team on top. His best hopes are for Trot Nixon to play everyday and for Jermaine Dye to come back strong in the second half.
Overall Rating – A
**2. The Sleepers **
Offence:
C Myers, Greg (C-Tor)
1B Gibbons, Jay (RF, 1B-Bal)
2B Hairston Jr., Jerry (2B-Bal)
3B Teixeira, Mark (3B-Tex)
SS Jeter, Derek (SS-NYY)
OF Ramirez, Manny (LF, DH-Bos)
OF Bradley, Milton (CF-Cle)
OF Cameron, Mike (CF-Sea)
Util Thomas, Frank (DH-CWS)
Bench Lawton, Matt (RF, LF-Cle)
Bench Crede, Joe (3B-CWS)
Bench Young, Dmitri (DH, 1B, LF-Det)
Bench Konerko, Paul (1B-CWS)
Bench Ellis, Mark (2B-Oak)
Pitching:
SP Mussina, Mike (SP-NYY)
SP Pineiro, Joel (SP, RP-Sea)
SP Meche, Gil (SP-Sea)
RP Rhodes, Arthur (RP-Sea)
RP Rivera, Mariano (RP-NYY)
P Lyon, Brandon (SP, RP-Bos)
P Julio, Jorge (RP-Bal)
P Rogers, Kenny (SP-Min)
Contreras, JoseNA (SP, RP-NYY)
Affeldt, Jeremy (RP, SP-KC)
DL Lieber, JonDL (SP-NYY)
Pitching has kept my team in this race. Mussina’s great start, the unlooked-for emergence of Meche, Pineiro’s consistency, a lucky guess on Lyon, Jorge Julio building on the foundation he laid last season. And now Rivera is back. Having three closers in a league like this feels almost wrong but it makes up for how bad my hitters have been. Konerko just keeps sucking. Greg Myers is my catcher. Greg Myers, and I’m happy about it! And Josh Bard was my catcher until this week. Did I mention I’m happy to have Greg Myers as my catcher in this league? I’m waiting for a Detroit hitter (Young) to qualify at third base because my other options are Crede and Teixeira – though Teixeira is showing signs. Jeter’s back. Thomas has finally started to hit. Those last three are my best hopes to compete for the rest of the season. I may have to trade a closer for a bat.

Util Martinez, Edgar (DH-Sea)
Bench Randa, Joe (3B, DH-KC)
Giambi, Jeremy (LF, 1B, RF, DH-Bos)
Bench Olerud, John (1B-Sea)
DL Greene, ToddDL (C, 1B-Tex)
Pitching:
SP Martinez, Pedro (SP-Bos)
SP Lackey, John (SP-Ana)
SP Radke, Brad (SP-Min)
RP Lilly, Ted (SP, RP-Oak)
RP Foulke, Keith (RP-Oak)

Bench Hendrickson, Mark (RP, SP-Tor)
Lohse, Kyle (SP-Min)
Bonderman, Jeremy (SP-Det)
DL Fox, ChadDL (RP-Bos)
Treviathan’s team has showed the best balance between offence and pitching in the first month and a half of the season. His offence is probably not quite as good as it has played. He does have Posada, the only catcher worth having in an AL only league – that helps a bit. A lot of ifs here; if Durazo stays healthy, if Edgar stays healthy, if Kielty keeps getting playing time, if Jeremy Giambi starts getting playing time, if he can trade Olerud – who he has on the bench because putting him in the lineup would mean taking out Edgar or Durazo – for another starting pitcher to throw behind Pedro (who can carry a team’s pitching stats) and Lilly, if Lackey gets anywhere near the sort of form he displayed last season, this could be the team to beat. But it isn’t yet.
