SDMB Visual Changes (IE11)

So, I accidentally* “upgraded” to IE11 this weekend. Now the SDMB has gone all wonky on me from a font standpoint. Not sure how to explain it, but the thread titles/posts seem…squished. It’s like the font is not being given enough vertical space and looks flat.

I’ve double/tripled checked that I’m at 100% view and that no other settings (appear to) have been changed.

What gives? Any help on restoring things (other than uninstalling 11 and reinstalling 10)?
*My fault, but it was in a long list of security updates and I missed it when I was unchecking the crap.

You could fix it by using Chrome or Firefox

It would be interesting to see if the web server is delivering a different style based on your browser (as opposed to your browser just rendering it differently locally).

To test this, hit <F12> and in the dropdown box labelled ‘User Agent Setting’, pick IE9 or one of the other values. See if that makes any difference.
This is a temporary change - easily reverted.

Gee thank you. That’s so fucking helpful.

Huh. It reports that it’s in 7 mode (default). Changing it to 10 does make a difference. Specifically, the text is…longer.

For example, I used the first sentence from your post. I screenshotted the screen and cut sections into Paint to compare them.

In 7 mode, the period at the end of the sentence lines up under the ‘a’ in “locally” from the 10 mode. Doesn’t appear to be vertically any different but it is definitely kerned differently.

So now I need to lock the damn thing into 10 mode. It certainly looks better.

Screw it. They changed all the F12 tools too. Dumped 11 and went back to 10. All better now.

Sorry you had problems. Sad to say sometimes new and mo’ better doesn’t always work … at least not right away.

Hopefully by the time the new iteration is truly mo’ better we’ll look just fine.

I saw you downgraded already, but if anyone else reads this and has the same thing, I’d LOVE if you could post a screenshot.

It sounds like it could be similar to how the board looked using mobile IE on WinPhone8 (before IE11 was released). I’d be really interested to see if it’s the same wonky things.

I debated whether to post that, I couldn’t tell how much you understood about any of this stuff given that you seemed to be asking the SDMB to fix an IE11 problem.

Roll your eyes at him/her all you want, it’s the best answer you’ll ever get. IE isn’t so much a browser as it’s an app for downloading actual browsers and nothing else.

Not your fault at all Tuba! I normally wait at least a few months before upgrading. Like I said, this time I just missed it.

Doggone it! I should have saved the screenshot. Sorry about that.

 to you too. It’s not helpful. I use IE for work because guess what? Most of the damn planet uses IE and when you’re in IT, you have to make sure your stuff works with it or you’re out of business. But thanks for playing.

RaftPeople. Yeah I know, but 11 is so new that Google wasn’t a help this time. Still, it’s telling someone who was in a car accident and is asking for repair shop recommendations that they should drive more carefully. They know that, but it don’t help the immediate situation. For what it’s worth, I have both Chrome and Firefox installed. As crazy as it sounds, I don’t like them - it could be because, as I said, I use IE for work and familiarity equals comfort. It doesn’t make me a bad or stupid person. Some people like rap/hip hop, some don’t. It’s personal preference, not a character flaw.

Not that the OP deserves any help, but I had the exact same problem when I switched to Chrome. I had to up the size to 110% just to see the fonts comfortably.

I’m not sure if the problem resolved itself or if my eyes eventually became accustomed to the smaller font size, but I no longer need to keep it on 110%.

The hell? Not that I deserve any help? Have we had a run in that I don’t remember? Or is it just “fuck IE users month” and I missed the memo?

Seriously folks, my post was not rude and didn’t blame anybody but me (and indirectly MS). I responded to a post that was not helpful for my problem in a dismissive manner (which is how I felt the author of that post was treating my issue) and was friendly and responsive to posts that did try to help.

If someone posted that they were hassled for being Muslim (or Goth or whatever), would you respond with “try not being Muslim (or Goth or whatever)”?

How about we go to the Pit if you really feel that’s necessary because I happen to use the most popular fucking browser in the world and that offends you or maybe you can just stay the fuck out of threads with IE in the goddamn title? Huh?

I actually feel too sorry for you to pit you. So, have fun with your anger issues.

Whoa! Everybody calm down.

No need to go yelling at one another and no need to be doing that here.

No harm, no foul here – the OP didn’t mean to upgrade, that got slipped in on him in a pile of other stuff. He did get resolution of his problem by downgrading the browser and that just proves that the newest version of IE is not so good as it stands with vB.

Not the first time this has happened, no doubt not the last.

Yelling at the OP changes nothing; yelling at one another is just yelling at one another.

If you want to keep yelling at one another, take it to the Pit.

I left this thread open when it first got hot because I hoped better resolution could come of it and I also felt people needed to know if they upgraded their browsers it might not be the best experience for them. That last point is still valid and is all that is keeping me from closing this thread; people need to see this. But you need to behave in a civil fashion. EVERYBODY.

According to some picture I found on the Internet, these days that’s a better argument for using Chrome.

Although in my experience it’s pretty darn important to “make sure your stuff works” in all major browsers.

IE11 changed the way the text scaling works, at my previous value the spacing between text and the various lines isn’t right. When I bumped the scaling down 5% (zoomed out 5%) everything looks close enough to how it used to be. Annoying, because the only reason I use IE for the boards is that it scales up text in a way I find better than other browsers.

If just changing the agent string makes a difference, this suggests that the SDMB web server might not be configured at all for IE11 - and may be just serving up a default configuration for that browser.

We haven’t changed anything. As far as I know at the present time, no updates are planned.

That would tend to further support my hypothesis - IE11 being fairly new, the board’s web server may be simply agnostic of it, and serving up default flavoured content as a fallback.

Yeah, “it is what it is.”
